First time tuning with DSMlink

Tonight was my first night tuning with DsmLink,
And wow, after just getting past getting the laptop to Finally “talk” to my ECU, I was ready to smash a kitten I was so frustrated.

Dustin from slowboy helped me adjust the mid (which is fine) and idle (needs work) long into the night, It would be 1000x easier if I had gone with a 2g maf, but I wanted to be difficult and go with a 3" G.M. mass airflow sensor and translator set up.

Once Dustin and I got rolling it was great, I am So SO SO glad that I can log and tune on the same tool, its just great ! every value, ie. idle, fuel trims, air flow, timing, Knock, Is ALL RIGHT THERE IN COLOR, and I can adjust all of them with the click of a mouse.

One great thing that stands out is how my stock boost gauge now displays knock and and not just knock but how much timing the ECU is pulling because of the knock.

Right now we are working on the airflow, and on the gm maf we are really close to what values ECM tuning suggests to use on a hacked 2g maf.

WOT is still in the future, however I want to get the low and mid adjusted before I put the true evo 16g on the car and tune for w.o.t.

p.s. I do have a FPR but dont have a gm 3 bar map sensor, but DO plan on getting one, And I DO NOT nor plan to get a wideband o2 sensor.

1000x better than an SAFC

MAP sensor makes MAFT calibration a ton easier. For how cheap they are, it’s a worthwhile investment. If you need help with anything, let me know!

for a map I plan on just getting a gm 3 bar, another $70 at this point is nothing compared to the inilial set up costs of maft and 'link

my car is acting really unpridictable,

the LTFT’s are Zeroed, after adjusting airflow at the diffrent hertz values, and the car will be fine for say 20min then without making adjustments it will start knocking at cruise.
I’m going to spend the rest of the day on dsmlink wiki and see if I can figure this out.

thank you, I have been balls deep in both of those calibration threads ON 'link fourms and I do have an update for anyone following this.

1st the o2 sensor on my car was bad.

2nd I bought a new oem knock sensor

3rd I bought a gm 3 bar map sensor

4th I broke down a bought an aem wideband

no but really my brother was helping me put in the widband/ move around somethings,

oh yeah my knock sensor was absolute junk, no goo left in it. oem on the way ,
the denso narrowband is wired up, the egt is being tapped in the 2g maniford

AND the brand new MHI evo 16g from slowboy is being put on now. I’ll post some pics, and will be starting a members ride thread soon

I have a slowboy lsd insert installed on the tre tranny, it will have to do for now.
once this laser project is finished or totaled I’ll be canabalizing whats left and building myself an AWD.

Hopefully we get it all straightened out soon so you can enjoy it for a change. You should have the right parts now aside from the IM gasket to get 95% of the BS sorted out. Hopefully this weekend we can tear into it and get it back on the right path. I’d like to see progress with it, instead of? “OMFG…WTF! I just set the fuel trims, they were 0. I SWEAR, omfg… I’m going to use the pieces of this laptop to slit my wrists”.

Which has been our previous 6 experiences with it.

dude. ive been fighting with my car since the day i got it. everyday ive spent time trying to make it better and reliable and things work. and still its not fixed. I know exactly how you feel. it must be worse when its not even your car! haha then when i do stuff the right way for example when i did cams i did lifters, timing belt, and a new water pump. then 3 days later the water pump is defective and starts spewing coolant so back apart she comes.

but its a dsm

either its going to give any car on the street a run for its money or it wont make it off the jackstands :eek3:

while I was changing the knock sensor I saw a little piece of gasket and all of a sudden it all made sence.

A leak in the intake manifold gasket ! I don’t care that its a pain in the ass to fix, at least I know whats wrong.

this of course comes after changing, well …go to slowboys website and look at DSM and the list that comes up well thats about what I changed so far…

and P.s. a boost leak test dosent find this because the throttle body is closed during the test

EDIT: I also wanted to smash babys/puppies after trying to tune the car for 6 days and nights, with the fuel trims changing each time the laptop got reconnected

Yeah, LL’s been trying something fierce to get shit straight. He’s been throwing money at the car like a mad man to cover anything and everything that could possibly fix it. Its just been very uncooperative. Betcha that horrid stutter at 2000hz + has alot more to do with the leak in the intake manifold, and not with “your car just being crazy, and I have no idea WTF” Which would ALSO explain your fuel trims I chased for probably a good 18 hours thus far behind the laptop. AND… you bizarre idle problems… AND… your random WTF knock.

Something tells me when you get that gasket replaced we might as well hit the fucking reset button on DSMlink and start all over. It will probably be easier than trying to back track a worthless tune on a car thats not leaking anymore.

Again, I don’t mind blowing my entire weekend behind a laptop trying to sort the car out. As long as I’m getting somewhere. I just hope this is the last gremlin we chase for a while.

I know, it may seem odd that I’m so jacked off about it, but I promised him if he bought DSMlink from me I would get him atleast “close” to where he needed to be. And give him a good idea how to use it. Which thus far hasn’t happened. Turns out he’s a pretty cool dude, so we hang out on weekends now and work on our pos’.

ahh dam man. I replaced my intake gasket too. mine was cracked up as well! however i put it on after i put the head on and it was a PITA.
anyway though. i hope it all gets fixed for you two.

shame you guys arent closer im trying to hookup with someone else to work on the cars together, since my garage is heated in the winter haha
