Does anyone have any good suggestions for fishing from shore around here? I know its not ideal but i dont have a boat and cant afford to rent one. Just looking for some decent fishing i dont mind driving just as long as i can catch SOMETHING.
What you fishing for and where do you live? Lots of spots around and the Dec website is pretty good at listing access points. Of course the Dec doesn’t really tell you how good the fishing is, but its a start.
I do a lot of fishing from shore but in all different places depending on what I’m trying for. If I just want to catch anything I usually go to Collins Lake in Scotia, by Jumping Jacks. Plenty of bass, pike and some panfish in there.
I’ve caught bass from above the dam at Lock 7 while standing on the pier. My suggestion is to look for a used canoe or kayak on craigslist - you can often find good ones for cheap. Perception, Old Town, Wilderness Systems are all good brands.
I usually fish Collins on the backside but have caught some good sized bass by the boat launch weeds too. Sort of whatever you’re feeling, if you’re getting skunked just drive to the other side and try your luck :tbu
Here’s the DEC map, just click whatever region you wanna check out and read the descriptions they tell you whats stocked and what’s there.
Lake Lonely in Saratoga also has decent bass fishing and panfish everywhere. You can rent an aluminum boat with an electric motor from the Lake Lonely Boat Livery for ~$30. It’s got plenty of juice for a long half day and the fishing is usually pretty good. Nice quiet lake most the time. There is some access to the lake from the shore but I’ve always got the boat when I’m up there.
I havent fished there since Irene so i dunno how it is now but I used to go to the schoharie creek near esperance a lot and catch decent bass and the occasional walleye all the time.
are you counting from docks as from the shore? I’ve pulled tons of fish from right off the dock at Schenectady Yacht Club (family are members). Anywhere there is a public dock you are likely to find fish, especially if the dock hasn’t been especially busy.
Yeah like standard rowboat size, not sure exactly. If you haven’t already you might want to call and check his rates this year and let him know you’re heading up. He doesn’t usually run out of boats but he’ll get it ready to go at least so you can get on the water quick.
