Since I’ve sold my a4, I’ve been regretting selling it. So now I’m looking to get back into the b5 scene & with a real job I wanna do it right. So my question to my fellow shift Audi fans is should I go the 2.7 s4 route or just do an a4 up with an upgraded turbo? Any advice would be great. I’d like to have the power of the 2.7 but I’ve heard mixed things about them.
make sure you have a daily driver
89 Honda Crx, daily driver until it dies lol
get an s4 then haha… they are awesome looking cars. Just the one’s I’ve seen around here have a large variety of problems
That’s my main concern. I don’t want a money pit but wanna go fast in an audi haha.
1.8T has more problems when modded. S4 is just a little harder to work on and has some more expensive parts. For the price you can get an S4 for these days why not have 60+ more hp and a 6 speed. All the 1.8T quattro cars I have been in seemed sluggish to me.
Both will be the same money pit. Nature of the beast. If ya wanna go fast then leave the 1.8T to the Nisky Lot
My 1.8t GLI rips pretty well but for some reason I just do not enjoy it as much as my old a4. I was thinking s4 simply b/c I’ve already had an a4. However, with already owning an a4, I know wht it takes to make them go & it’s a lot of $. S4 I’d just do an exhaust & tune for a nice toy.
and spare cash for repairs
I got one for you. 5k take it.
I own a b7 S4 it is my daily. Just do the proper maintenance you will be ok.
If you do go with the 4.2 things to look for are chain rattle on start up can be a 6k issue (at a shop) since you have to remove the engine to fix the timing chain guides. Oil changes are not cheap it takes 9.5 quarts and don’t use the cheap shit. You will get 3 radiators with that engine so 3 times the possibility of cooling system problems. You need snow tires yes traction is an issue in the winter even with awd. Valve cover gaskets love to leak so check them often. Oil consumption be diligent I check mine once a week.
That’s buying tips.
Now it is a fun car to drive plus you get the sexy 4.2l 40 valve V8 sound. If you go that way and have questions let me.

I’m looking to get a B5 as a project, as I’m about finished with my B6. What’s the one you have for sale look like?
Looks great. Just gotta ship it so I can make room for the new ride. Body and paint look great, santorin blue, 6 spd, clean title, zero accidents, tbelt service done, has intake exhaust and tune.
Pm sent, definitely interested
A GLI and a quattro A4 are to different animals as you know…
Pmd back
Damn… Stallmer with the DEALS
make sure you’re best friends with the audi wizard
Yea, user skidplate has a lot of experience with them
This is very true. I just enjoyed my a4 more than the GLI. Granted the GLI has 1/2 the mileage & moves a lot quicker but idk I just miss the luxury I had.
If by doing it right means finding a good chassis to start and building it right, I would get a manual trans A4 quattro 1.8t AEB.
Forget leaving the bottom end stock. The parts and prices have come down on building 1.8t’s with all the recent 2.0T support out there.
Tried and trued IE forged rods, $350, JE forged pistons & rings $400, ARP head studs $150, Eurospec main studs $150, $300 in gaskets, msc bolts, timing belt and dowel pin kit for the crank. $1300 builds you a stout bottom end. You could even just do the drop in IE rods with the stock AEB pistons (slightly stronger than the AWP shits) and do it all with the car on a lift and not touch the top end saving a ton of time and money.
3071 on it, 25psi, 044 or even a walbro 255 inline, stock intank, 630cc injectors, 350hp or so. Leave the AEB head stock. Keep the turbo choice around a 4000K spool and let it rev to the stock 7500 redline. The VW boxes are decent at keeping the upshifts from redline to around the 4000rpm in the next gear, put a WOT box in it and never come out of boost on upshifts. It would make a fun car for sure, and get 35mpg. Unitronic or Eurodyne tune deletes SAI pump that always die, EVAP that always leaks, MAF, secondary 02 so you can run full catless, and best of all all readiness monitors are HARDSET to pass… so no worries at all trying to pass inspection.
The 1.8t I built in mine with the 3076 @26psi was an absolute blast. In an AWD car that could hook less than 3rd gear like the jetta did, would be very very quick.
You could also go nutty on it too and do a stroker 2.0L+ 1.8t based motor, put valves and springs in the head, cams rev it to 8000 or a bit more, 67mm BB turbo or bigger, and make 500-600hp rather easily.
