Front Plate Location Legalities

Hey guys,

I just did a search on the forum and didn’t come up with a straight-to-the-point answer so I wanted to ask it in order to clarify…

This is concerning front license plates locations.

Normally plates are supposed to be in the middle of your car, but as far as being off to one side, I know thats okay, since older Dodge Caravans and Plymouth Voyagers came from the factory with plates on one side.

What I wanted to know was whether or not having your front plate inside your car, on the passenger’s side dash board was legal.

I’ve seen too many JDM tyte y0 Civics, Integras, and even a few S13s with them placed on the dash.

I wanted to know, is that allowed? What are the other rules (if any) on this?

Also, I’m planning on making a bracket and relocating my plate to one side of my bumper (beside the grille). Is there a “legal” location to put it? Either the left (driver’s) side of your vehicle or the right (passenger’s) side?

Thanks

Putting the plate on your dash behind the winshield is not legal.

It has to be located on the front bumper, and it has to be visible.

I’ve talked with a few policemen about the same situation. Some can be pricks about it, but from what I was told, all they really care about is that your plate is visible.

needs to be placed in a conspicuous place.

so yeh, on the bumper somewhere very visible.

or you can keep it in y0ur window and keep getting harassed, i know people who do.
they dont mount it lol

and they say the reason behind the window plate is “if you get in a accident it mit efly around and cut or seriously hurt someone”

honestly if im in a accident hard enough to make that thing fly ill be lucky to walk away.

i think the bylaw states that there can be nothing infront of the front plate.
therefore even clear plate cover is illegal as well…

I have a friend that just doesn’t put his on, but has all the OEM mounting equipment in a sealed bag from the dealership in his car at all times. If a cop pulls him over, he says he’s waiting for the paint on his bumper to cure. He’s gotten off once or twice that way, and he says he’s only going to put it on if he actually gets the ticket. Not a bad plan if you wanna go that route, imo. Your paint does need to be in good shape for that, a beaten up, chipped up front end will be a tell-tale sign that you’re lying.

There’s too many loopholes in Ontario… Its illegal for something to be covering your license plate, yet Canadian Tire, a big-name store is selling clear plate covers. Apparently they’re selling illegal products…

Ah well…

Anyway, what about having my license plate put off to one side?

Its a bad pic, I know… I’m not at my own computer and this one doesn’t have photoshop, so its the best Paint can do lol…

Would this still be legal? Or would it have to be on the other side?

that would be fine
if a cop gives you a ticket for that, then he must have pms or something.

I’d put it on the other side if I were you, because im sure thats where they would want it.

not true.
i got pulled over by a cop for having my front plate like that on my jdm silvia front bumper. he stood there and watched me angle it and modify the mounts with whatever scrap i had right then n there to avoid getting a stupid ticket.
then i told him where i lived, and he followed me to my main interesections i guess to make sure i wasnt shitting him or something.
none the less, put it there, at that angle and you’ll end up bending your plate.

there are some loop holes like cover the oem drilled holes in your bumper and say that it was imported from the usa that is completly legal apex auto in oshawa used to have that prob because there cars are all from florida but its completly legal unless they check out ur car :frowning:

I’m pretty sure that only works if you have american plates on it. They don’t care where the car is from.

Cops will do what they want at our expense, theres no “loop holes” around anything. Somehow we all become a statistic.

I got the ticket for having it in the windsheild and went to court and won since the cop never showed and was told it should be mounted on the most forward upwards portion of the front bumper.

Then i got pulled over a few months later…this time i lost my front plate and she came back saying “Im going to give you a ticket for no front liscence plate, you know its $110” Trying to make it seem like thats a lot to me…so i responded saying “Yeah i know” and she was like wtf and asked how i knew. I told her i got it before and she said “Why havnt you done anything to fix it since then” i said “I have not had the time im sorry” she responded “Give me one good reason to not give you this ticket” so i said “because it will further delay me getting new liscence plates” off she went all bent.

it has to be on the outmost part of ur bumper. i went through a mto and a toronto highway police inspecation station with my kouki and i had it mounted on my bottem lip he just told me to move it.

Why even deal with any hassle just mount the sucker in the middle unless its going to obstruct your front mount. If so mount it off to the side and thats that. Mine looked ugly as sin off to the side but its better than getting pulled over.

Windshield is gay, you are just asking to be harassed. I really dont get ppl sometimes. With all the BS out there why on earth would you not mount your plate properly considering all the other mods on the car. Its like people without licenses that drive and speed…they’re just asking for it.

when i first got my car my plate bracket got ripped off so i put it in the windsheild.

ive had it there for almost 3 years now and never had a word said to me about it even after going through ride etc

not that i condone putting it there…im just too lazy to fix it

I’m building a bracket so that the plate doesn’t bend.

Jowo72, why would the other side be better? I assumed the passenger side, since when you purchase one of those 10-day passes at the MOT, they require you to put it on the passenger side windshield… :S

You don’t have any guesses as to why they would want it to be on the passenger side? I’ll give you a hint, it starts with an S, and ends with “eeing where you’re going”
