Front wiper issue

2000 VW Golf
Wipers are slow to move and do NOT go back to the “park” position when I turn them off. They stop and start in the middle of the windshield, keep on going but never go back to the stop position.

From what I have gathered through some reading, wiper issues seem to be a fairly common problem, be it problems with the wiper motor, linkage or relay.
I’m diagnosing this as a relay problem. Anyone have this issue that can share their knowledge?

Germanautoparts.com buy a new transmission, under “Wiper Linkage” $35, cheap. Yours is probably all kinds of messed up as they seize and bind, strip the splines or just slip, and they park strait up sometimes.

The park circuit is in the motor, they’re $69, and sourced used locally pretty easily.

you should just join DITB i know this has been covered there before

:noob:
Embarrassed, but big enough to admit it…the wiper stalk switch was not all the way down.:ham:
BONEHEAD!

But, I did learn where things are located, AND realize that my wiper motor may be on the way out, it is slow going in all positions, so will be replacing that soon anyway and now because of this, know how to do it.

if it’s just SLOW, the motor isn’t at fault, it’s the linkage/transmission that’s froze or in route to being frozen. Buy a new transmission for $35.

Thanks for the insight and help.
Cheap fix and easy DIY!

Hold your tongue wiggling it out, and be careful you don’t hit the glass sliding it out.

this happened to my old green tdi golf.

cheap part.
simple fix.

Happened on our A4 too. I took the trans apart, cleaned up the shaft, and the broze bushings inside with a round wire brush in the drill, and regreased it. Works mint for an hour or so of work with my daughter “helping” and cost $0. Also the wipers never went to the park position exactly as someone must have previously replaced the transmission and didnt line up the arm on the motor spline perfectly. It took me a few tries, but now wipers dont dip 1/8" before going up.

EDIT: whoops, this doesnt look serviceable like the A4 trans. Guess its time for a new one.

Thanks for all the first hand knowledgeable replies, it’s appreciated.

As for the car, I do like it.
The wiper issue, the AC needs a recharge and the left front wheel bearing needs to be replaced.

Interior is a little more “used” than I would usually like but overall it seems to be in good shape and it should fit our needs.

For $35, I won’t take them apart anymore…

I didnt really have a choice. Hers basically stopped working all together (making a horrible clunk noise) and she had to drive the car next day in the rain. Plus its cool showing your kids how to fix something without having to spend money. Finally I dont think the A4 one is so cheap. GAP doesnt even list it. ECS has them for either 56 or 175 bux. I like $0.

This brings back memories. I think I had to do this to my Jetta too. I forgot about that one. So much stupid shit like this broke on that car. MKIV’s are such piles of crap.
