This is how it works in NC as well. Some people do this to get inspections to pass. Some people “know a guy”.
If they can see the top of the window, they’re probably going to want to inspect it. If you can convince them that a window does not exist, then you can definitely get them to pass it.
None of my cars are tinted so it doesnt bother me, but I am sure with an item like this the risk may be less, unless you have police sitting out front every day.
It would be easy for a shop to say that the vehicle was not tinted at time of inspection, anyone can buy a roll of film from autozone and apply it.
If the state had any brains, they would require a digital photo of the vehicle at time of inspection.
Got the wife’s car inspected just in time I guess. I actually want to take them off anyway. She has dark tints on her Prius and one of them have scratches that drive me nuts. Hamburg is brutal with tints though and she actually got pulled over with my mom, sister, and niece in the car haha. A Prius actually getting pulled over, crazy.
If I was a shop I’d just be ripping people off on the price to remove them when their car fails. Always look for the way to profit.
Wonder when hes going to change the law to include trucks and SUV’s from having the factory privacy tinted windows. Imagine all the tax revenue from requiring every truck and SUV owner to buy new windows.
I have to wait to pick up my new car because the dealer failed it and wont sell it with the tint on it and inspected…grrrrrr
Now I have to wait for them to remove it and inspect it, but I did get them to write on my purchase agreement that if my rear defrosters dont work, they will replace the back glass.
Rear side windows must also allow at least seventy percent of light from the outside to pass through the window if the vehicle is classified as a

Why is a Mini Van/SUV/Pickup truck perfectly acceptable for the rear doors to have tint but a station wagon or hatchback is not. What sets them apart?
Looks like they cracked down on the medical excuses too. Pretty sure you used to be able to get your Dr to just say the bright light was giving you headaches and that was enough to get the medical waver. Now they specifically address it with the following:
NYS Health department regulations specify that only the following medical conditions may be used to justify an exemption from the limits on light transmittance. If you have one of the medical conditions below that require you to have tinted vehicle windows, you may request an exemption from the law using the Application for Tinted Window Exemption (MV-80W).
Regular windows, inspection windows. How hard is swapping glass?
(I’ve only installed one window and it was in my lotus and it was a breeze. (The reason I had to was because my dumb GF at the time left her purse right on the front seat at delaware park and I didn’t notice. (She wasn’t very smart (she thought unicorns were just extinct, not mythical. (She also thought she washed a bleach stain out of her favorite shirt, but it turns out is was just on backwards.))) She was fuckin hot though.)
