Are you dealing with Insurance brokers or the companies directly? As far as I know Insurance companies cannot deny you insurance based on the vehicle being RHD. Sounds like you are dealing with lazy brokers not willing to go the extra mile and talk to Insurers direclty.
First things first. Has the car been properly registered? I’m guessing the guys you bought it from did.
Perhaps if you agree to have the car appraised yourself they’d be more willing and open to negotiation. This is more for the purposes of fire and theft coverage.
Problem is Insurance people generally won’t give you the time of day over the phone. The bonehead you talk to on the phone is just punching some numbers into a web site to find out your rate. Chances are they are too damn lazy or stupid to figure out what to do when the computer won’t accept your odd numbered VIN.
I suggest calling ahead, telling them what you want done, tell them you’ve had the car appraised for insurance and make an appointment to see them (a manager) in person.
All you need is a standing relationship with a company.
What hey will do is appraise it and rate you based on an appraisal, they don’t need a VIN to rate it… that’s what my current insco said, and I have heard the same from others.
I asked around too, and if you call up as a new policy they usually are not interested.
problem is kinsway won’t rite it i don’t know why but they won’t thru my broker. something to do with a clear number contained in the VIN.
i’ll figure it out, even if i have to use that silver wheel insurance that’s $200/year and i can’t drive it…it’ll be a nice present for my dad then,
so i think i’m stuck with nordic, for some reason facility will only cover it…good thing i only need insurance for 4 months really.
Any company should be able to get you a 19A policy, try asking for that by name. I am sure most brokers and bozos you get on the phone haven’t ever even heard of a car without a 17 digit VIN… so they ask their supervisor who also hasnt heard of it, and they say no. Mention to them also that cars predating the 70’s didn’t have 17 digit VINs either… how do they register them?
well i tried what tyou said, stillt he same thing, the cars before the 70’s show up in there system thats why. So they can’t do the appraisal thing because they can’t rate the car.
WTF is wrong with people! it’s a god damn car insure the fucking thing!
axelrod i added you to msn i would realy appreciate your help on this…i dunno why they are so damn difficult
Well you can do the Lant Silver Wheel insurance and still be able to drive it, I think they allow you 5000km per year. But you need to have another car as your daily driver.
I have heard that Lant is rather flexible on the 10 year rule.
I would avoid State Farm, they are one of the frontrunners in the crackdown on modified cars. RBC told me they wouldn’t insure them as well, but they are a bunch of goofs there anyways - the people you speak with really don’t know what is going on.
Really what is most important is that you’ve been with a company for a length of time. Then they will know it’s worth it to get your business. The company I am with is called Economical, and they will insure an imported car - at least for me. See if you can’t get the car registered in your fathers name, that is sometimes wirth doing.
