.
Most of the people who I know that actually cared about this product dislike it.
I seriously don’t think I have seen a positive review(although I am sure they exist)
This is also coming from an avid mac user. I have the iPod touch. I have multiple machines running OS X. Hell, I am selling an iBook in the trader section here.
in the news: if it bleeds, it leads. Nobody gets a headline by saying a so-so product (which is what it is) it so-so.
To be honest, I usually find that Engadget and Gizmodo are pretty good about being real about device reviews.
Droid and Nexus One are perfect examples…Engadget didn’t give either device an astoundingly good or bad review. Just some good points and bad points.
edit:
fyi, this will be my next machine
in for HP slate
so it’s now an unportable iPod, that has no USB or optical drives. Thanks Stever for an ultra slim piece of shit.
Simple fact, this thing is useless. No one had a need for a product like this and if they wanted to sell it they should have came up with some unique or revolutionary features to make it desirable.
In contrast the Iphone had a purpose when it was realized and filled a need, it allowed people to combine their phone, camera, ipod, and “netbook” into one.
Its an ipod touch for your grandfather. he can put it next to his giant ass remote
best reaction so far to the iPad:
from a friend’s blog:
The iPad, its perfect even with shortcomings.
Partially through the iPad announcement in a room full of geeks, you could tell everyone was slightly disappointed. After all as geeks we want more. We want every bell and whistle out there, in a device that is cheap, fast and reliable. The hype was reaching epic levels, and yet somehow no device could have ever lived up to it. Heck, I don’t think the 17" Macbook Pro lives up to some of the rumored features. That being said, the iPad is PERFECT. Yep I said it, perfect. Sounds odd when you consider the editorial reviews and tech blogs today. But honestly hear me out. Its easy to point at shortcomings. As technically mind people that I am constantly surrounded by, we all can easily come up with a grocery list of things we wish it had. I really really wanted a stylus, and HD video out. Guess what, this device doesn’t need any of that. This device isn’t for geeks, its for everyone. Once you consider that, it makes a lot more sense. The average computer user is so fed up with their machines. Want proof? Look at Apples market share growth over the last 10 years. The average user has a Windows computer, and over the last decade we have gotten to watch people cling to XP, too afraid to move towards Vista. Windows 7 seems to be doing better, granted, but that doesn’t stop the hassle of virus software, and malware and firewalls and everything else. The average user doesn’t want to deal with this bullshit. They want a device that turns on quickly, surfs, plays some media and can be put away just as quickly. Anyone that has a cursory knowledge of technology understands the hassle of supporting family and friends through the trials of dealing with the average computer. Heck most of us have been pushing our family and friends towards Apple computers because why? They are easier, more reliable, have fewer issues, etc. The iPad takes all that to a whole new level. Sure it lacks a lot, but it does 99% of what everyone needs and it does it extremely well. You can’t tell me that the iWork demo wasn’t cool. It was. Sure it doesn’t have the millions of features that a desktop version has, yet again most people don’t need that. Unless your job title is administrative assistant or some other document pusher, you really don’t use any of that crap, and if you do, I am sure Apple and the other manufactures will continue to make full fledge desktops and laptops for a long long time. It is important to remember, that Apple is seeing this as a new device segment, not a replacement for one. But what was most telling was how many times they said “It just works”. I agree with them. Whats to go wrong? There is no spinning platers, barely any risk of virus or malware. Software installs, updates, etc. are all easy to perform. Heck a little number shows up on the app store icon. My mother can figure that one out, as can millions of other peoples mothers. And thats really the point. Geeks will buy this, cause at the end of the day, even just the web surfing on the toilet is worth the price of admission. Parents, grandparents and other non-technical people will buy it, because well it just works. Its pretty much everything they need, with little to no hassle. And for all that, I can pretty much say that while I am completely underwhelmed, I feel we are seeing the first truly “user friendly” computing device ever made.

also, remember when the ipod came out people made lots of fun of it:
lol even when preaching how it’s the perfect computing device even he couldn’t actually say what it’s good for.
it’s implied that it’s for 99% of the basic things that any person needs a computer around their home for.
just as the ipod was the next thing beyond a portable CD player, this is the next thing beyond your use basic home laptop/PC.
go read a few pages from the ipod 2001 thread I linked above and they all sound like you. maybe I’ll be linking back to you in 5-10 years.
Just because one product was successful doesn’t mean they all will.

What is this thing better for? Sell one to me.
apple TV was a good media extender for when it came out. It sucks compared with all the new ones you can buy right now for $100.
They need a new better apple TV, otherwise I roughly plan to buy a mac mini for use as a server and media extender, and then an ipad to remotely control it.
I currently just have a macbook and it spends half it’s time plugged into my TV/receiver which is annoying.
OK so it’s a $600+ dollar remote control?
A salesman used to visit my office with a laptop that had no keyboard about 5 years ago. So what makes this so special/different? :gotme:
The apple logo on it. Considering it usually doubles the price of a product compared to the same product without it, they should make it out of gold or something.
:picard: if you don’t get it, you are beyond help at this point.
it’s a lot like saying you don’t understand the new corvette ZR1 because your grandfather had a V8 chevy in '57
