its not about getting it. there is nothing special about this product at this point in time. apple hippies are still going to be all over it, while everyone else looks at each other and says “whats the big deal?”
[sarcasm]Yo Brah, Check out my Ipad V1.2[/sarcasm]
that blog is the dumbest thing I have ever read
macs don’t need firewalls? weird…point me toward their IPs with no firewall…please
barely any risk of virus or malware? Oh please
That guy is a fucking tool
I don’t know anybody with a mac that has needed to add any firewall software. do you?
Please point me in the direction of wide spread malware attacks against Macs? Last time I checked all those 10,000+ node botnets were windows based…
:tif: I will give you my IP with my firewall off however my PC just like everything else is behind a router doing NAT.
- If you are behind a router, you’re already firewallled
- OS X has a firewall…built into the OS…Same as Windows XP has had since SP 2.
botnets! Efnet!
fuck yea!
yea yea I know most viruses are for windows…you got me there, but talk like that makes most people think they are not at any risk at all.
Yeah, but if you walk into a wireless hotspot with your firewall disabled, or are on a college dorm network (dorm networks are THE worst) you are at big risk with no firewall.
nitpick if you want, but the larger point is valid. I know tons of people with PCs full of spyware and worms etc… yet not one person with these problems on a mac.
Still, the even bigger point is that this device is simple, works great out of the box, and doesn’t have much of anything to go wrong.
I feel that you’re just digging for an argument to make macs look bad.
I’m not digging for anything…Just pointing out that your blog buddy is a pretentious douchebag.
People like him are the reason I hang my head in shame when I admit to being a mac user.
I think he’d Admit he’s a pretentious douchebag…
he’s also an excellent investor who’s made a lot of money through options involving apple stock.
oh look, cnet just said basically the same thing:
True, the device does seem a bit mysterious from that perspective. But it’s less so if you step back and look at where Apple has come from and where it wants to go.
If you look at it from the perspective of someone who’s not super technical, but does enjoy consuming media, the iPad could actually work. As previously mentioned, I keep thinking of my mom as the perfect use case for this device. She knows how to use an iPod, and really only uses her laptop to check her e-mail and go online to read the news. And it’s not her first choice to take her laptop anywhere because it’s “too heavy” for what she would actually use it for.
However, she does travel fairly often and is an avid reader. Having what is essentially a color e-book reader with the ability to quickly check e-mail and download some movies and TV shows from iTunes is probably good enough. She could care less that there’s no Flash support, in other words.
That will not be compelling enough for everyone to spend $500 to $830 for one, and this may not be a huge hit the way the iPhone has been. However, I really don’t think the example of my mom is unique. John Gruber made an excellent point Wednesday: “Apple doesn’t talk much about the technical details of the iPhone. They never talk about CPU speed or the name of the chip being used. They don’t tell you how much RAM is in there. Part of their vision for moving computers from technical culture to popular culture is about getting away from defining these things by their technical specs.”
So basically they’re selling them like New Beetles. Aiming at broads who have no idea about what’s inside what they are buying, but it looks pretty.
Isn’t that what they’ve always done?
Yep. Except to make it a valid analogy the New Beetle would have to cost 40k.
easy usability and meets all the needs in an attractive package that just works out of the box.
what’s so wrong about that?
just like the iphone/ipod, anyone who buys the first version will feel like a dumbass when they come out with one with better features/cheaper in 5 months.
There are plenty of devices that do the same plus more, for half the price
it’s the total package… arguing that other devices are capable of doing some of the thing for cheaper is meaningless.
the ipod and iphone also fail your test yet own their markets.
go buy some options against apple and become rich quick if you’re so sure.
the ipod an iphone are mobile devices. they fit in a pocket. Also, to most people, they are a phone first, and everything else is just a bonus.
