Going car shopping tomorrow. Give me tips.

It’s kind of funny when you ask for a manual transmission. A majority of sales people just go :bloated:, it’s even better when they can’t drive it.

truth. that pretty much happened to me when i test drove a scion.

 Yeah I was looking at tC’s and xBs they were all like. We don’t sell those here. Fortunately I came to my senses and got something else.

I know of somebody with a pimp GC8 coupe…rally blue is the pimpest color too… AND ITS A 5speed

After giving this a little thought:

Don’t spend ~10K on a VW unless it is a TDI. No exceptions. 2.0s are reliable, but get such poor fuel economy considering their power output. 1.8Ts get good fuel economy considering their output, but require extra expensive maintenance such as a very strict oil change regimen or else the head goops up with sludge and makes very bad and expensive things happen. VR6s have their own issues with timing chains and the fact that they usually came in cars that were loaded up with options that can go wrong in the future. They also can be pigs around town.

The TDI makes the most sense. It doesn’t have a pesky ignition system to go wrong. VWs diesels are proven. Travel if you have to for a TDI. Don’t settle on any other VW. I won’t ever again.

As for finding an AWD in your price range, it might be a little challenging. Large dealerships tend to put out cars that will stand up to a fairly tough inspection before they will retail it out to the public. They don’t want the car to come back for warranty work in that 30 or 60 day period. Since an AWD car has many more wear and tear components such as CV joint boots, differential seals, wheel bearings that take on more forces, there are more reasons an older one will flunk their inspection. They also typically hold their value well, especially around here.

Since you are young and going to school, you are probably better off getting something small reliable and good on fuel. Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Nissan Sentra, Nissan Altima, Mazda Protege/3. With the money you save, you can go ahead and get some nice snowtires on cheap wheels for the winter months and be more confident in snow than an AWD with half worn all-seasons and still be ahead financially.

In hindsight, a MKIV VR6 wasn’t the greatest way to spend $10k. I mean, I like the car and haven’t really had that many problems, but I can think of a lot better ways to spend $10k now. And anything that gets 19-20 mpg around town should be a fuck of a lot faster.

Stay away from any Nissan with a 2.5L 4 cylinder. This means B15 Sentra SE-R’s and Altima 2.5’s. 4 years into production and they’re still having to shut down production because of sludging issues.

Eh I think he was just admitting ignorance to car buying. Fair enough. If you’ve never had a reason to know, how would you?

Wow, I didn’t know that about the 2.5. That is too bad, because on paper, that engine looks promising.

I don’t mean to completely rag on VR6s, but another argument that you experienced was resale. If you decide that you want to get out of owning whatever you buy, which is going to be easier to pawn off, a VR6? or a TDI. Heck, anything with a Honda badge will demand top dollar too.

Granted both are a lot cheaper than $10k, but if you’re just looking for basic transpo on the cheap…

dawn in all honesty, that would probably be your best bet. i realize you want the fun and security of AWD in the snow. i know you want something that would be a lot of fun to drive on a daily basis.

given your life situation that i know from what i have seen you post and what you have told me personally, i think something like a honda would suit you best. i bought an old integra for 1200 bucks. it’s ugly as sin and embarassing to drive around in. there are no redeeming aspects to owning this car…except for reliability and maintenance cost. i can not stress enough how great it is to just get in the car and drive it like normal people do. i don’t have to go out and fix my car on my lunch breaks so i can get it home from work that day now. i don’t have to factor in an extra 20 minutes on my morning commute to pull over and do a minor repair so i can get to work and school.

that car bikerfry posted will last you another 200,000 miles with a minimum amount of maintenance and cost. do what you want, but if you do something like that, you can focus on work/school and costs relating to that. once that is paid off, you can bank excess money for a bit and put money into a fun car when you have it.

i can not stress enough how much easier my life is now that i have something reliable that i’m not fixing everyday. my friend’s lives are easier too because i’m not calling them for rides all the time anymore either. ask woody, shrives, eviljay, jam, sc1chik, etc how much they like that i have a reliable car now. :lolsign:

+1 for the security of AWD being useless when you’re running around on bald all seasons because you can’t afford the car and the upkeep. Used FWD Honda or Toyota, finish school and don’t be stupid with your money, and 5 years from now you’ll be in the financial shape to buy something you really want.

From what I’ve seen from your posts I know money is tight. Gas isn’t going to get any cheaper over the life of this car you’re buying, and AWD isn’t going to help your MPG. In terms of reliable cars a little Honda or Toyota FWD is going to be hard to beat for cheap transportation.

word. get some decent snows and you’ll be fine in a civic. i have good all seasons on my integra and i started driving at the tail end of winter. i was a little nervous about it, but it was just as confident as my jetta was with snow tires on it.

Hot blue gc8, great gas, awd, fun car, for sale. cough cough.

Since you’re looking at Subaru, check out Jeff (s101 on the board) at Northtown Subaru. He’s a great guy and he’ll take care of you.
