Golfers (Clubs Recommendation)

My current set now is showing it’s age. I had them for over 10 years now and I am looking to get a new set. I used to golf a lot but now it seems like I only get out like 5 times/yr anymore. So I am not in the market for anything super nice but want something that is decent quality and not too much $$. I am looking to get a complete set minus the bag for under $250. From what I saw the Golden Bear Jack Nicklaus clubs seem to be decent for the $. They have a few different sets and the prices are all under $250 for an entire set. Anyone own/used these? I am thinking about picking these up b/c of the price and I read great reviews. They have two sets offered in lefty…

Here are the $170 set

and the $250 set

i bought my brother a set of golden bears…and had them fitted…there a little old man style with sloppy shafts…i dont know your swing…but i have great iron shots with my set of mizuno 23’s…stiff shaft for controll…i allso use ping g2’s woods and a ft5 callaway driver…hope your hunt goes better man…good luck.

i really like my cleveland clubs versus the taylormades that were ranked just as high in the mags. My sugestion is to go to a hackers helper swing for them let them recomend what you need n go to dicks n hit a few different brands.
no matter what the reviews just hit the ones you may think you like give it a day try again. I was suprised that i bought the setup i did

didnt know u golfed. we’ll have to hit the links.

honestly i laugh at the gobs of money golfers throw at clubs to play absolutley awful. lessons and 2nd hand clubs will do better than the best technology that is out there. knowin what club to hit is better than the brand of club. unless you are serious about golf and play a hell of a lot any difference you think you can tell between similar brands is all mental. a used set of Ping zings is a good choice. i was hittin my dads the other day and they just have a nice comfortable feel to them compared to my OG wilson K2’s

the technology has dumbed down the sport. I’ve seen a good golfer hit a wooden driver as far as the best that is out there today, the only difference is with todays clubs you have a bigger room for era than with the old technology. Clubs can only hide so much thou. I would go to one of those 2nd hand stores and pick up a nice set that someone else took the initial hit on.

you gotta swing them, go to dicks and try to demo them on there range. see whats most comfortable. Then buy them online, I got a set of cobras at a deep discount online. Cutty, clubs make a huge difference.

I went to Dick’s yesterday on my lunch with my Dad. I saw a left over set of Golden Bears for only $150. I went into their demo range and hit a few of the clubs. That is one pretty high-tech setup. I really liked the clubs and accoring to the machine I was hitting them great. I never hit a hybrid iron and hitting the 3 hybrin w/o a tee I was hitting it straight as an arrow 250 yards. So if that translates to real life I will be a happy man. I ended up getting the set with a $20 coupon…so a complete set minus a putter for $130 is a great deal. Now I just have to go out and find a decent putter .

Yes clubs do make a difference…but they can only make so much of a difference. There are a ton of people out there with $1,500 int heir bag still shooting over 110’s. But to when you suck to snub your nose to decent equipment b/c it doesnt cost a ton of $$ is retarded. Most newer clubs are good enough for your avg hacker to play with.

I agree you Bics, I picked up a cheap set of the Jack Nicklaus clubs from Dunham’s last year, and they work just fine for me. I’ve used my buddies set of Ping’s and couldn’t really tell a difference. Maybe it’s because I’m not incredible but for me to drop hundreds more for something not needed is stupid. When are you guys down for going out for a quick 9 in the afternoon?

For sure…I am out in Moon right near Scally’s…then I live about 5 min from SP…so I have nine hole courses near me either way…oh yeah Frosty Valley and Mt Leb are within like 15 min from me too.

Down for Frosty Valley, my car is parked about 20yds from it as I work right next to it. I’m no pro but I’m not completely awful lol—its always a good time. I went to FV two weeks ago and the course was trashed. They have a ton of irigation issues, the first hole is usually a freaking swamp

Well considering I work till 5 and I am out at the airport I may be pushing it to make it there and get 9 in. I guess if I get there @ like 6:30-6:45 I should be able ot get 9 …but it is pushing it. I haven’t been there in about 2-3 years…is the 1st hole still that downhill par 3?

not if u dont swing them right.

I agree…but when I first started my Dad bought me a cheap used set out of the pennysaver…old school wood woods…old rusty Arnold Palmer Irons…then the next year I got a beginners Dunlop set and I could tell they made a huge difference. But yes if you are hacking away and barely making clean contact it doesn’t matter what you are swinging.

Then there are the guys who buy drivers for $500 and they still hit it like 200 yards with a slice…I always get a laugh out those guys. But it is like any hobby, once you get into it you get into it you get all crazy.

cutty, i didn’t know you played hit a brother up. i’m always looking to play, i was playing with a dude 2-3 days a week, but he bitched up and bought a harley and his golf funds went to shit.

You already bought clubs, so I guess it’s a moot-point. But golf clubs are one of those things that can be great Craigslist/ebay finds. Just like most sporting equipment ppl go spend a stack on top-notch equipment thinking they’ll love it and go all the time. They go out once or twice, suck royaly, and the clubs sit in a closet for a year before they decide to “cut their losses” and sell for pennies on the dollar. Of course you need to know what kind of clubs you want ahead of time, and in general you’re only going to find standard length regular flex clubs, usually oversized heads. So if you’re tall, swing hard, or are good enough for a ‘blade’ you’re going to have a tougher time.

Yeah I searched e-bay and Craigslist first…the thing is I am a lefty so my selection is very limited. When I hit the clubs I bought I really liked them…so for $130 I couldn’t pass them up…hell i am golfing in an outing next month that cost $120.

Yeah, you’ll be fine with those clubs for sure. If you want over time you can keep an eye on CL/ebay and start by upgrading your driver, woods and maybe putter but you don’t ‘need’ to by any means.

And green-fees can start to hurt. That’s why I try to make sure I take clients anytime I feel like golfing. Expense FTW. Haha.

i bought the adams tight lies set from dunhams like 2 years ago bag and all for like 290 bucks, they have been great clubs, i need a driver cause mine is all dented up but oh well, on the other hand my dad is a really good golfer shoots in the mid 70 range he bought the callaway fusion irons with a graphite shaft played 3 times with them and hated em, went out and bought ping raptures and i got a free set of $1200 irons, still have not got to use them yet, but i bet i still shoot in the 90’s

My mother in law got me some Adam’s GT2 Tightlies irons last Christmas and they are pretty good. Before that I had some 20 year old clubs, so anything was an upgrade.

the graphite shafts will probably be worse for you than steel.

eh, graphite might make you lose a few yards. i play graphite irons and woods and steel wedges, it’s more or less what you like.
