Police Continue To Crack Down On Street Racers
Thursday July 5, 2007
CityNews.ca Staff
Police across the province are continuing their efforts to clamp down on street racers.
“[Street racing] is a great personal danger to the driver and there’s great personal danger to the spectators. Plus, if you put an awful lot of work and money into your cars, they will get damaged,” warns Toronto Police Sgt. Ken Sluman.
CityNews got to tag along with Halton Police as they patrolled the roads and in the span of about 10 minutes, our cameras captured about half a dozen cars speeding through a 50 km zone.
A lot of the times, it’s supped-up cars that are involved in street racing incidents. One way racers try and dodge authorities is by using cell phones and cheap scanners to detect police presence, but cops say they’ve got the tools they need to stay a step ahead.
“The biggest thing is that we’ve got helicopter surveillance available to us when we need it,” added Sluman.
Last May, the provincial government enacted stiffer penalties for convicted street racers by raising the maximum fine from $1,000 to $10,000 dollars, the highest charge in Canada.
Since 1999, 38 people have been killed by street racers in the GTA.
first, look at the picture they include for this article …
wtf, is that a astro van “street racing”?
second, take a look at the article again and look at what the author includes as “street racing” …

okay, so you caught a half dozen cars speeding through a 50 zone … what? that means they were street racing? couldn’t they just be SPEEDING which is what EVERYONE is capable of regardless of whether they’re a “racer” or an everyday citizen? why else would you include that stupid fact in your article about “street racing”?
i’ll tell you why … this is one of the essential bias not only in the media, but in public perception about alleged “street racing” … ANYONE who is SPEEDING is automatically assumed to be “street racing” or a racer. even worse, if you’re young, get into an accident with another car … “OH! they must have been street racing!”
f*cking ridiculous i say …
we should really think of a way to reverse this situation… like **** man smoking somone is hella egoisticlly satisfying but its just stupid cuz speeding doesnt involve any skill at all…
about the news papers they just wanted readers so they refer to speeding like 20 kmh over as street racing… someone should really sue these SOB article writers for misinforming the public…
when i came here i was actually surprized how many car accidents you have in a year… where i came from highest was five in a year and only one of them involved street racing.
and yeah minivans drivers deserve the tickets they are a$$H0Les!!!
i think ima put a sticker like “race me on the track” to thwart other showoffs from provoking…
This is just getting ****ing annoying (pardon the language). I think all the responsible tuners should carry big ****ing sticks, and break all the irresposible tuners’ legs, j/k. But seriously, this is getting out of hand. I don’t want to get pulled over and told I’m a “possible street racer”, or “I’m being watched as a street racer”. Anyone who has a concious wouldn’t dare risk their pride and joy that they soak so much money into preserving. How many of these “street racers”, are actually racing highly modified cars? I.e. Mad engine work, engine swap, custom fab, million dollar paint job that took over 500000000 man hours to complete, or any kind of work that isn’t a bolt on exhaust or intake? Maybe there’s a way to create some sort of awareness that not all tuners are ignorant, irresponsible, and imature jack asses? **** these stupid little ricer ****s are getting on my nerves.
tonite a guy got mad at me in a turbo srt-4 cause iwouldnt race him, honestly i dont know who he thought he was but that was wack, my friend was offering him a race. we said take it to the track, he claimed a 11second srt-4 that didnt even break loose the tires when he left in rage.
LOL, yup thats the guy, this dude was really arrogant, wanted to race me when i was driving a montana, lol, i laced him in his Gay hayundai.
I dont know the police number for calling in street racing, but im sure you can find it on the peel region police website. I just am to busy at work, i haven’t even driven my car since the last meet, by the time i reach home im dead sleepy.
lol your post is funny.
who’s the one revving in neutral 7, times, to show off the sound of your bov, in front of go for tea? LOL
you only didn’t race that dude… cause your turbo piping popped… LOL
the worse place of all, IMO, to even try speeding, is lawrence road… i swear that area is filled with atleast 5 cops driving in one direction on my way home (10 min drive) from my buddies house
“Since 1999, 38 people have been killed by street racers in the GTA.” <<<thats less than 5 deaths per year, there are more people who die with normal cars!!! way more…like drunks, bad driving, people who don’t know how to drive… more people die sitting in africa due to illness than 4 street racing related deaths per year.
if you look at the total number of sooped up cars in canada that is nothing 4 deaths per year, they are basically saying no one with a sooped up car should die.
its common sense, every action has a consiquense, its the balance of life.
out of 10 smokers 1 dies with the first smoke they have, why dont they eliminate that.
they should look at the ratio of drunks and its accident, 90% who drink cause accidents.
they look at it based on how the people in their district see it as a problem, if enough people see street racing as a problem in north york for example, it will be escalated to be more of a regional problem.
Politicians only care about one thing, staying in power any way possible. Look at Michael “the punisher” bryant, imagine how happy his district was when he said he said he would have every tuner car crushed like a beer can. its appeasement, make the people happy and they wont tar and feather yur ass out of office.
well said:R , your statement is like the other half of my point, because it really dosen’t make sence when you look at it from numbers and rationale, its merely politics!!!, sucks.
well numbers only count when people call the politicians on their BS which is exactly what takeit2thetrack.ca is trying to do. politicians are trying to create situations where campaign promises can be made because clearly reducing taxes as logical as it sounds isnt fully possible but thats a whole other issue. sorry for taking the thread off track.
