We see the videos, we read about them, we practice it in games, yet none of our events have had it: Time Attack. The Japanese love it, and it’s no wonder they do. But even here, Solo events run timed events, so it’s not hard to adopt.
So, my proposition: Somehow, we have a or an event(s) with timing systems for recording best lap times on the track. Cars are grouped in different categories, and everyone gets to see how good their machine can fare against the clock. Everyone runs together like a lapping event. It’d be fun to see highspeed drifts and 10-15 degree slips angles used to push a vehicle to its best, or contrast that to a conservative 6-10 degree tolerance. It’s all relative to your setup.
Anyways, we all know there are more details involved in a Time Attack event, but I figure since we all love the motherland (Japan of course) we should adopt this event style as well.
We have looked into doing time attack events and will be doing them in the near future. Possibly this year if there is enough interest. Expect HUGE things from us regarding drifting this year though.
This is all great news because I am preping a drift car for this summer.
I also want to road race it too at Mosport and Shannonville and if their will be Time attack events… all the better. My dad is my mechanic, and he’s wanting to push this car’s performance as far as possible
Time attack events will give him a chance to show his stuff.
yes yes yes, wonderful stories we have now about people and their ambitions and experiences…
However, Lets all work together to stay on topic here folks. Time Attack. CSCS Racing and DIP have made mention that they are considering running such events. How do we feel about this, and will any other organizations do the same?
I’m pretty sure with a bit of persuasion (ie proving people and cars would show up) Redline Time Attack would do north of the border event.
I’ve talked to Dan at Redline about it before, and well, like that shitty movie about … baseball? “If you build it … they will come.”
Not to piss on the same fire I’m trying to light, if you look at the caliber of cars turning up for the US events, having a few 240s go round and round won’t get them off their butts.
This always confuses me. Why is it that there is a great Ontario regional series of timed events called Solo Sprint (exact same thing as time attack), but nobody is interested unless you give it a Japanese name and have it organized by people with absolutely NO experience at it? Is it because you don’t want to play with people you don’t know? Is it because nothing is cool unless you or a friend are in charge? I’m curious. As a 9 year competitor and organizer I want to know what is at the root of this phenomenon.
BTW I’m the person that did the timing at Dunnville for the RX7 episode of “War of the Wheels”.
Marsh I think its largly because these people don’t quite know what Solo 1 is all about, they think it is too hard to expensive to get into, dont realize that it basically IS a time attack with classing etc etc they just basically are not exposed to it enough to be hooked and pulled in to find out more.
Time Attack should be simply TIME ATTACK. with very few rules its just the fastest most ridiculous cars in the area competing for the absolute fastest time possible with only a VERY small amount of set rules such as:
DOT tire
must be a production based car (no full tube frames or purpose built race cars etc)
then have FWD / RWD & AWD class
you’re right there are not enough cars in ontario or even north eastern NA to run a real time attack here but it might be fun to see who comes out
in a real time attack my car would get owned. it doesnt have nearly enough HP and there is still a lot a lot of development that could go into the car.
to me time attack is just like omg lets build the most ridiculous effed up car you could possibly imagine and then push it to the absolute limit so it will only last a few laps at a time but see just how fast we can go
solo 1 is more like im into going fast and learning how to race and want a competitive environment to race against the clock and other peoples times and a system to equalize all cars
time attack should not equalize cars it should just bring all the fastest cars in the area to the table. every car that goes out should keep peoles attention and blow minds at how ridiculoulsy fast it is
