Some people on the s2k forum have had trouble with almost stalling at lights because of some gunk build up in the throttle body… I’ve been having this issue all season… I was waiting for the car to adjust itself… but for whatever reason its not…
a few owners used a can and the problem went away and that was that…
Has anyone used any? I went to a local auto store and they had like carb cleaner… but I don’t know if thats safe to use… they used to have some for my application but the dealer recalled a little while ago and they havnt seen it since…
any thoughts? has anyone used the stuff? howd it go? exactly what product did you use?
Recalled?? I have no idea I know there are at least 6 cans sitting on the shelf, yes you spray into the manifold when idling or fast idling, might have to give the throttle a blip ever once in a while to clean it out
some shops have a machine they connect your fuel system to and it cleans it out…
I USED IT AND IT IS A FUCKIN MIRACLE
…saved me a LOT of money since injectors is mad work on a 300ZX and all it needed was for the injectors to be cleaned out…PM if u want info on a shop that does it for 60 dollars
carb cleaner has oil init for the shafts
fuel injection version of carb cleaner has less oil in it
brake cleaner is basicly the same shit … but with NO oil in it
if you want to clean carbon out of the cylinders , fire up the car slowly dump a 2L of water into the TB … the difference in exhaust cloud will signal you when all the carbon is gone
my old fiero needed 8L of water every 2 weeks… EIGHT LITERS!
as for cleaning the intake sytem…sometimes its best to yank the throttle body off and start by claning the manifold by hand
ill eventualy wind up doing this on the boosted eclipse because the shape of the manifold allows crap to pool in the plenum , theres all sorts of oil from the pcv and carbon from the egr laying on the plenum floor … nothing i want to attemtp to send into the engine
instead ill pull the TB and whipe out as much as i can with a rag , plug the runners in the plenum w/ rags then use carb cleaner to wash down the plenum walls and soak the mess up with rags again
reinstall everything , then run the car, crack the throttle and run another 1/2 car thu the motor to clean the runners out too
eh, i just clean out the throttle body every once in a while. i’d be afraid to gunk up the cylinders if i cleaned out the manifold with that nasty smog equipment crap that gets put back through there.
If i were you i would take out the whole intake manifold and soak it in seafoam. You won’t be able to reach some clogged small ports by spraying it directly at the butterfly opening. It should be pretty easy to take out on my miata since the miata and the s2k has very similiar motor configuration.
“Run-Rite” induction cleaner. That shit does do VERY well. We used to sell it (5 years ago) at the shop I worked at. When the Rep first brought it in, 3 of us volunteered to try it out. I ran it on my G.Cher (5.2). Literally had carbon blowing out the tailpipe. Throttle response was better, mpg went from 13 to 15ish (awd v8 :gotme: ). Good shit. My motor had ~115k on it at the time and died about 10k later from spun main bearing (two of them). So… no ill effects.
I don’t know who has it now, but I would suggest it. iirc we charged $60 for it and it took ~30 minutes.
I’ve never heard of water in the induction tract… I imagine You pour VERY slowly…? if it works tho.
pour it just as slow as you would pour yourself a glass of pop if u wanted to keep the pop from foaming up
your steam cleaning the cylinder with over 175psi of pressure because water doesnt compress like air, so by replacing intake air with water, your bumping the compression ratio up too
so if your car is running pig rich and your going to have it dyno tuned, its a good idea to run some water thru it to clean the chambers out so you can get a good tune
or if your setup is prone to detonation, keep the cylinders as clean as possible by adding water occasionaly
just pop the pvc line off and drop it in a gallon of water … as long as your intake mani is log style and not “header” style (4 pipes collecting into a collector style plenum)
