Ok so I get in my car last night and while driving I had no 5th gear. I couldn’t put it into gear from a dead stop I couldn’t double clutch it into gear nothing would let me put it in. All the other gears and reverse worked fine. I’m hoping it was because it was cold and I didn’t have time to let the car warm up, and it had sat all day. The night before it worked fine. Also for the longest time my clutch has been slipping a bit but it only happen at +120 km/h. And also when shifting from 5th to 4th I would either have to double clutch or heel toe to avoid grinding the gears. Would that be apart of the problem? I haven’t gone to see it yet today.
Any ideas what the problem is? Besides a dead tranny.
it could be your synchros, your tranny, i dont know your clutch isnt helping either ? it should go into 5th gear regardgless of how broken things are just cause its such an easy gear to go into, i dont understand
low OIL (5 spds use oil, autos use fluid) won’t cause your tranny to not work properly like low FLUID does in an auto.
Auto trannies use the fluid to shift gears, it is a hydraulic system.
Standard trannies use the oil to cool/cushion the tranny.
Low OIL will cause more damage/heat in the tranny.
It’s normal to see metal shavings in manual tranny oil. That’s why they magnetize the drain plug.
What I think happened is one of your shift rods is no longer lined up with the check ball properly, so it’s not allowing you to select 5th. If it was due to mechanical damage, odds are you’d lose more than one gear.
Resetting the shift rods is more complicated than swapping in a known good tranny.
I’d suggest swapping out the questionable one, and taking your time with the malfunctioning one. See if you can figure out what went wrong without needing it to go back in right away. The rebuild kits for the FS5W71C are not teribly expensive.
