HELP: Ticking noise from valve cover *PICS 2nd page*

And no I don’t think it’s the timing chain. The timing chain makes more of
a rattle and mine has been fairly consistent over the years.

While 1/2 way to work today, the car started making this ticking noise.

Almost like the ticking noise you hear from the injectors, except it was
very well amplified (loud).

It was almost consistent with the RPM although fearing something
catostropihc, I kept the revs below 3000 pretty much the rest of the way
to work.

Water temp and oil press seemed normal. Throttle response was normal
although I didn’t fully test it out of fear.

I haven’t adjusted the timing in quite some time and it’s somewhere in
the +20 deg range.

Only thing I adjusted last night was the idle screw and the TPS.

Will I make it home tonight? :noes:

Please keep “It’s time for SR” and the usual retarded comments.
I’m very bitter right now. You’ve been warned. :squint:

Timing chain…?

or maybe lifters, sure your oil is okay…?

I was suspecting oil since the roads to my work are pretty shitty and I
have somewhat bottomed out a few times. Hopefully I haven’t busted
anything. But I’ll make sure to check that.

At 2000rpm the oil pres is about 40psi (60-70 @ 3000rpm). Around the
time my idle problem started, I was getting about 60psi or so at 2000rpm.

Wonder if it’s engine knock? :dunno:

Does pinging sound like it’s worded? Like a metall ping or is it more of a
tick? I know I asked earlier about this but just verifying.

Hrm…

It’s hard to say without seeing it, but check your oil level, it sounds like it could be the lifters, if you add more oil it should go away after a few minutes…

What Phil said,

Hows your oil level/condition. … maybe you have coolant in it, maybe not enough oil. … are you showing any blue or white smoke?

Will do. Good thing there’s a Canadian Tire near by. Thanks and
hopefully this works out. :grouphug:

just go SR already

Pshh…

ka>sr.

ka>sr.[/quote]

Yeah, not if its built buy gonad though…

or driven/maintained/parked/looked at by Gonad…

Gautam’s KA > Gautam

sounds like lifters to me… most older nissans do this.

ya my KA did that and i beat the shit out of it and its still running in a car somewhere just fine

it was the lifters

Wrong.

ka>Gautam

lifters? who needs lifters?

Well I know my lifters made the noise but the sound seemed amplified,
and as I drove slowly through work’s lot, almost seemed like I had a
few pebbles in my valve cover or some shit.

This year hasn’t been good to me.

Don’t worry, next year people will be saying
Yea, that varun character was the king of smooth running SRs amongst brown people, but now there’s a new king in town. :hsugh:

And his name is…

Change the oil, flush the engine, make sure oil’s topped up. KA’s have very tiny oil passageways, and it doesn’t take much to starve the valvetrain. All it takes is one small flake of carboned on crap to fall from the valve cover, and it’s bye bye valvetrain. Usually when the oil starts to get thin, your lifters will start clacking. If the mileage on the motor is super high, it might be time to get the cams shimmed.

If your motor is pinging at idle, it would have blown apart by now. Detonation tends to sound like a crackling … like a mylar chip bag. Someone needs to start a database of “common car sounds”. Trying to identify, or describe sounds through words is ass.

Bottom end noise … just think of every rattle trap Chrysler product from the '80s. That sound they make pulling away from the lights? That’s rod bearings. Basically if it sounds like a diesel, it’s already too late.

Advice taken.

BTW, I’m running 15w40 (or 15w50 I forget) Mobil 1 syn. Without getting
into a debate on oil viscocity, perhaps I should just stick to 5w30 or 10w30? :dunno:
