How should I protect my chassis from the elements? I need grey colored....

I am getting ready to paint my chassis and was wondering what is everyone’s prefered way to protect it? I know Por15 is very popular but want something that is light grey/silver in color. I know Herculiner makes a grey shaded coating. What are my options? This is how it’s lookin at the moment.

You need charcoal met. to match your wheels … call eastwood

How much do you guys think I would need to do everything you see in the pics thats already silver/sanded down and the frame rail to the front and my control arms?

I’m gonna get a gallon and see how far I get. I just don’t know if I should get por-15 (can’t find a pick of their grey or silver color) or eastwood

gallon should do it

ppg dp. it is a basecoat sealant. i.e. shit will not let mositure under the paint. however, it is not as hard/duirable as rhiono liner, or por 15.

napa has some kind of industrial paint. i forget what the brand is, but if i go out to the garage and look i can tell ya. i think it was a acrylic urethane. it is a very durable paint. it’s chemicle resistant and chip resistant. it can be mixed to any color. i used it to paint my wheels. it’s a sigle stage paint with the clear mixed in. just add hardener.

edited-i just went to look at a can. it’s called MSU. it’s used on idustrial equipment, construction equipment and OTR vehicles. basically anywhere where a hard durable finish is needed. but it should be sprayed on for the best finish.

ppg got a paint called DURETHANE it is a rock hard coating … they can custom mix it ti any color you want.

does it need sprayed on or can I brush it on?

it is a spray on…

I need something I can brush on. I don’t have the tools for a spray. I’m still wondering about POR15’s different colors. I’d like to go with that if the color was right. I like the color of the rust encapsulator from eastwood but they recommend that it is still painted after it’s applied. I just want to do it once and be done with it.

Por15 is meant to be painted over for it to work anyways. Just use it and paint over it with something silver and a clear coat for extra protection.

well I decided on the silver colored POR15. I was recommended by a few people to sandblast it first for best adhesion. I origionally wanted to brush it on also and was convinced to get a small detail sprayer and spray it on. I bought a small sandblaster and the detail gun and started yesterday with a few brackets and a set of shocks. I setup a kiddy pool to do the small pieces with a refridgerator box surrounding it to collect most of the sand. I just have plastic setup for when I do the frame and axle.

I need to get a better air filter for my compressor though. I was running without one for awhile and it was clogging the nozzle like crazy. I added an old water trap from a previous air system I had on my truck and it wasn’t catching shit. For every 3 minutes of spraying I spent 1 minute cleaning the nozzle… can’t have that shit, it gets old fast. Maybe I’ll chain 2 water traps together… water in my air pisses me off!

run 2 in line… that should take care of the problem…

after hooking up my brand new water trap and draining my tank/hose over night it is working like a charm. Now if I just had 160gal of air with a compressor to fill it faster than I can spray and I’d be in heaven…

John if you need anything give me a call

Paint the frame with Dupont industrial line Imron. shit is nasty but has a nice finish and real durable. usually about 80 to 110 per gallon depending on what color. Let me know I can get it. Paint stores will not sell it unless you know what you are asking for. If you want to check out some of the stuff I have painted with it stop by. It is what I paint frames with and holds up.

Thanks but I already ordered the POR15. With the thinner and shipping it was just under $150. plus it seems that I’ll have to topcoat it with something else… haven’t decided on that yet

Imron, holds up to the sun too. That is the only reason to topcoat por 15 is for Uv protection. If it is the frame you should be ok.
