at my GF’s house she has time warner internet and her computers all keep saying that there is limited or no connectivity and she cant use the internet. how do i fix this and y does it keep doing this?
sounds like wireless?
Make sure she is connecting to her wireless and not a neighbors and check the signal strength.
if everything is right, then update the router and wifi card firmware and try again.
Or try using the wificards application to control the device not windows, or vice versa.
Is access available through a wired connection to the router?
If yes - then it is a wireless signal problem.
If no - then it is a router problem.
Just make sure it isn’t a DHCP problem from TW, because that has happened with me in the past. The easiest thing to do it reset the router and try again.

yes
i will try updating the firmware, i remeber i had trouble doing it last time but i dont remember what the problem was
That error usually means its getting signal…its just not getting an IP from the router.

Usually whenever I get this error on my laptop choosing “Repair” in the connection window fixes it. You could also try turning the router off and back on.
yep, ide be willing to bet that when she has that message, that she is getting a 169.xxx.x.xx ip address

Yeah 169.254.x.x is always handed out with limited or no connectivity. Usually this is solved by resetting the router and reconnecting however if it doesn’t. Try to hardwire, still same error, bypass the router and connect to the modem directly with a good powercycle, if it still gives you that, chances are the modem is having a dhcp error. (its very unlikely that both nic cards are bad unless a horrible power surge happened).
Basically by doing the above you can a) find out if its the wireless b) find out if its the router c) find out if its the internet connection. Then you will know whether or not you will need to flash the router, but be careful because if you mess up you will “brick” it and ruin the router.
Good luck.
she does have access through a wired connection then the DHCP in the router is working correctly.
if it were my computer i would re-install the wireless drivers
Or the wrong wep key, wrong wep key will give you the limited or no connectivity as well.
im gonna go out on a limb and suggest that it is most likely not secured

i turned off the security cause i bring over my wii often but it use to have security
well make sure that her wireless is card is not trying use security. not sure that would cause a problem, but i sure would try it
ok upgraded firmware and now it seems to be fine, but here is another problem that just started after. when one computer is using the wireless it slows down the computer that it wired to where its almost better to use a dialup connection, i have to disable the wireless network connection on the computer and when i do that the wired computer is fine again but when i enable the wireless card again it back to being slow. what would cause this now??
That right there seems like a router problem. Do you have another router to try? Or what happens if both are hardwired into the router, does it do the same thing?
