Ok. Here is where you arent understanding why we moved as many troops as we did though. You seem to think we brought over a large amount of troops to fight the war and to take over. They were not fighting any army they were simply on ground to secure and restructure. There was some resistance but most of what is fought is small militia groups not some Iraqi army. Irans military is far more advanced then Iraqs and by no means would it just be some walk in the park task for the US. But it is a far cry from something that we cant handle. What it comes down to is that our air defense and air support are too far superior for them to fight. This will enable us to disable most of their force without much of an issue.

No i do think we would still end up with a mess of forces in Iran if we went in. But i am talking about the overthrow of their military. When we came in here we pounded the living shit out of them from the sky and they were mostly disabled before we entered on the ground. Now years later we sit here with a shit ton of troops trying to obtain whatever it is we are trying to obtain(i really dont even know at this point). What im saying is that we wouldnt have an issue overthrowing their military force. The amount of amrs Iran has wouldnt be as much of an issue as how many people they would be able to recruit to fight in the same ways we fight here. Dont get me wrong i want nothing to do with an invasion of iran but i dont think it would be too much for us.
and you missed the part where they are crazy fucks and are in the perfect position to attack other countries in the gulf with bio weapons which everyone predicts they will do
bottom line: a war with IRAN will have twice the casualties cost twice as much and probably take twice as long

I see where cougarspeed is coming from. The military part of war with Iran would be much simpler than rebuilding Iran in the image of the US republic government. Zwarbyt and Sherm are thinking of the whole process where you are thinking of JUST overthrowing the Iranian military. I concur and agree, it would probably be pretty easy.
In doing so A) The US would be even more hate and probably create more terrorists. B) oil prices would shoot through the roof.
We can shoot down anything they put in the air and have patriot systems all over the middle east. They could shoot neighboring countries but not anything over any water. I agree with your second statement. I dont think anyone is going to tell you that war is ever going to be a walk in the park.

This is what i am saying and i think Zwarbyt gets it but i think justing might actually think that we are fighting for the power over here and that is not the case at all. A war with Iran would suck balls really hard. But us taking over wouldnt be the issue.

Destroying Iranian infrastructure and then not re-building the country would be a HORRIBLE decision, especially since the youth in that country is wanting a more western like political landscape. In fact I hope we’ve learned a lesson from RECENT HISTORY that it’s not wise to destroy a country, because the rebuilding process takes FAR too long. To be quite honest a ground invasion of Iran is the only military option to topple the regime without creating the vast anti-occupation sentiment that we currently face in Iraq.
If you don’t destroy the country, you don’t have to rebuild it.
So since we don’t have the troops for a full on ground invasion, and we don’t have the money or political power for another decade long occupation, confrontation and infrastructure rebuilding our only reasonable option in dealing with Iran is diplomacy and covert operations.
Additionally if we were to flatten the country like the wise j_espo1 suggests, do you have any idea what the ramifications to our economy would be? The void in the oil market would drive the cost per barrel up to the point that our economy would fall into a serious recession if not a total depression. Do you really think China is going to cut down on consumption? Nope.
Attacking Iran would be an economical death sentence for the country.
