i currently own a 1990 300Z 2+2 and a 1990 240sx coup.
the 240 will be my winter car (dont cringe), but i want to make it fun for the snow....i want a borderline "cant drive" in the winter 240…lol
What i mean by that is i simply want to get a turbo set up going on the Stock KA. Who here has it done, and if i`m doing this on a junk yard budget, what should i expect ? as far as parts/reliability.
^^^^Thanks, I have a general knowledge on what parts i need.
I wasn`t going to do much to the innerds…ie: injectors. nor was i planning on u/g-ing the fuel pump either.
This will be just a 6-7psi set-up for a little bit of boost, i plan on selling it in the spring for some fun mods on the 300Z…or depending, i may sell the Z and go SR20 in the spring…
Ultimatly i was wondering about reliability. If i just go junk yard style on the turbo set up (miscellanious parts from varried applications), with STOCK innerds, how will this effect my engine… i know it won`t effect it in a good way, but should i expect a mass breakdown…or should it be reliable enough to do what i want it to do?
I just don`t want to drop a G on a crappy boost system and then cook the engine… please keep in mind i have no intensions of doing anything to the innerds of the engine.
go buy yourself a turbo volvo parts car and make sure the turbo is in good condition
make yourself a manifold
you dont NEED a fuel management computer unless you want to idle smooth
find a turbo car with good injectors and buy them second hand
make yourself a manifold with t3 flange
you can use volvo downpipe, volvo intercooler, volvo rad, volvo rad overflow, volvo bov(sounds mean)
now i dont know if your serious or if you know what your doing
but these can be had for under $1000
if you go fmu look into a cheap device called megasquirt fuel and spark
if you want to see teh car im talking about, its the charcoal hatch in my mini video in car chat section
so its possible to have a turbo done for under $1000 for the KA?? Sounds appealing. I’d totally do it for now and then upgrade later when I have more flow. More details would be cool on the charcoal hatch :thumleft:
You can also use dsm bov, turbo, smic but you might need some custom piping. Without engine management you will idle like shit. ka rad should be fine for a low boost application too.
the WRX i think its a G20TG or something of the sort. The nice thing is its oil cooled…alot more $$ to get it working efficiently though… $250 for that one…under 10k on it.
the T3 i can get for $300 and spins perfect, no play at all…kms unknown…
It depends on the side of the t3 it needs to be a 63ar / AR60 or bigger. I would say Volvo, Subaru, and dsm unless its the 18b + turbo are to small and will choke at high rpm.
For fuel. If you don’t plan on keeping your engine so long FMU would work. (Some ppl go for years as other go for a week, they are temperamental with only a diafram controlling the pressure) Remember proper tuning is the key to longer life.
And I would say 2000 if your lucky. Unless you have hook ups and the setup is really really bad.
you got to remember:
down pipe and exhaust
oil lines
waterlines (maybe)
gaskets
taping in to your oil pan
gauges (at least a boost and FP)
Turbo
wastegate
IC
BOV
Manifold
Fuel management
Fuel pump
IC piping (you can use abs)
^^ True. Easy to forget the little things. Look at websites selling Stage I turbo kits and get ideas from what they each include. ie. http://www.import-autoperformance.com/240sxstage1.html
Then merge these ideas together and formulate your setup! Don’t forget the “CHEAP, RELIABLE, FAST - pick 2” saying.
