Anyone find clarification on the actual knife law in NY State?
Can you carry a switch blade or any blade that pops out itself in your pocket?

no switch blades.
oh also, anyone know where to get the audio alarm things that go on keychains that if you pull sends out a ear piercing alarm?
sounds grenade on the iphone … WOW that pisses people off and really quick~
Dude you’re gunning for HRK’s title…
well, outside of NYC you can have I believe up to a 9" single edged blade concealed, anything larger single edged in plain sight(including single edged swords), double edged is a no no, and switch only with a disability, military permit, or while hunting/fishing with the required license. You can however EDC an assisted opening blade which is pretty much as good as a switch blade. Look into a smith & wesson M&P, they have a lever activated assisted opening blade, pretty much a switch blade but a little lever/switch instead of a button.
Thank you. Just what I was looking for.
you can own an “assisted open” knife. where you start to move the blade and it goes the rest of the way on its own.
assisted open demo:
an OTF “out the front” knife is on the fence of legality. Again you start to move it and it goes the rest of the way on its own. BUT it slides up vertically, hence out the front.
OTF demo:
You can own a switchblade legally in NY if you have a hunting/trapping license. However you are only supposed to carry it when hunting/trapping. Carrying it any other time is your choice…
switch blade demo:
For brand I would recommend cold steel or SOG.
brads whats the knife that ed alex had. Its had the finger on the blade that hooked your pocket. So it opened as you took it out. Had to kinda slide it out.
The knife Ed had was just a very well oiled standard open pocket knife. He made the part that would catch on the pocket in a machine shop class at school. It was a pretty slick set up I must say.

these open when drawn from the pocket inverted with the clip on the pocket. i have a similar one to this, but not engraved all poser like. they don’t make the plain version i have had for quite some time, carried very well in BDU pants.
Anything CRKT, Cold Steel, SOG, Kershaw, Benchmade, and Boker will treat you great
honestly, I have a Boker Kalash and its just really well kept and oiled so I can flick it open just as fast as any switchblade
oh, forgot to mention, most autoknives are completely illegal, there is one loop hole in the law but I can’t remember what it is…
they spring both back and forth from the front at the flick of a switch, awesome, but so illegal
lol boxxa, my fav poster IDK WHY
I own an emerson commander with a custom Krein regrind that’s sick sharp. The commander carries very well but is a lil bit on the expensive side.
The commander and most emersons have a “wave” feature that when pulled from your pocket catches and deploys the blade all in one swoop. This opens as it comes out of the pocket making it legal but faster than a switchblade even.
I also own and would suggest for a bigger production class knife the zero tolerance 200 with liner lock. It’s the best knife for the money IMO. They also have the 300 series which is assist open with framelock if you insisted on getting assist open.
My 2 cents…assist open are a waste and more dangerous for no benefit. They open via a spring under tension that once past a certain point releases energy swinging the blade out. I can see how that could become triggered in your pocket. Likely…no but not something I would not chance. Some do have a lock feature but that would slow down your deployment when needed. A good blade opens very easily and locks solid without any assist spring. The zt 200 is such a knife, it’s a tank!

ZT200. I got mine from the above ebay seller…fast free ship and best price I could find. I would get the plain edge blade myself not the serrated combo blade as seen in the above auction though.

New York
* Summary: If it looks like a weapon, it's illegal.
* Max length: 6" (?)
* Specifically illegal: Switchblades and gravity knives unless hunting or fishing with permit
* Relevant laws: Penal law
* Local restrictions:
o New York City Must be under 4"
I have this in my pocket everyday
How do you like the speedsafe on that guy? It’s the same style assist that’s in the zt300 series. Both have Ken Onion designed styling. I don’t imagine it opening by itself in the pocket but I also just don’t see the need when a well build folder deploys with a negligible speed difference. I also have a feeling that assist open knives will be banned unfortunately (hate laws overall ). I mean…honestly…how can they not look at that mechanism and consider it automatic. It’s a blade loaded with tension released at the flick of a lever. Same thing as a switchblade realistically.
I also should point out that the zt knives I mentioned are bigger than 4" blades therefore not legal to carry depending on the local law. I’m curious if anyone knows the 100% legit answer to what the max blade length is in Buffalo. My understanding is it’s 4" or under just like NYC. ???
OMFG…i now need an iPhone
Who brings a knife to a gun fight anyways…
I’m pretty sure it’s illegal to carry a sword, single- or double-edged in NYS.
Im pretty as long as it is shealthed and exposed its not illegal, but if the cops had to they could throw some local law at you to stop you from doing it
