Learning to Snowboard

ok so me and the gf wanna start learning, where is a good place to go? Holiday Vally?Kissing Bridge? group lessons or private? i think ill catch on a little quicker, as my GF is a little clumzy. should we buy equipment outright or rent till we get better. i know ZERO about Snowboarding… Thank you for any info and your time

I say rent the first time just to make sure you’d want to continue. Everytime I learned to ski or snowboard I bypassed the bunny hills. There is just to little ground to cover to practice enough. Not to mention such a small hill gets crowded faster by beginners. That being said, to me KB would be a better starting location because there are more beginner friendly hills that are not steep so you can get a ton of practice going down them. HV is 10x better overall but you wouldn’t notice it just beginning.
As for lessons, I never took any, but I heard for noobs it was really helpful to get a couple in just to get the basics of what you need as far as techniques.

Holiday Valley has lessons and shit. Go look on their website. They also do rentals too, which are pretty inexpensive.

I’m glad this thread was started. It’s been 7 years since I’ve been on a snowboard. And my last experience wasn’t too pretty. But… it is winter, and I’m bored as faaacccckkk, so my friends and I are heading out to HV on Monday. Yikes.

I wanted to learn how to snowboard until I tried it on the Wii… I’ll sick with my skiblades for now.

Rent until you’re comfortable and know you’re going to keep snowboarding. Screw bunny hills. My first was Mardi Gras and I was on my ass most of the way down lol.

Iv been looking on both websites for about a hour. I just wanted peoples opinions with real world expierance. Hv has leassons for like 60 which includes rental lift pass and a 1 1/2 hour lesson? Good deal

I think lessons are overrated. Hit up the bunny hill for a bit, there are usually people willing to help as well as the regular hill. Its better to find someone who can snowboard very well and learn from what they do.

I just took some kids up to kb 2 weeks ago from arizona and they picked it up right away.

I mean, its your money, but its not rocket science and I’m sure if your somewhat coordinated you will have no problem.

For $65 its only a lift ticket for the bunny hill.
$90 gets you up in the real hills.

Like I said though, KB offers more beginner friendly hills.

I took my fiance and myself to Holiday Valley last Dec. for the snowboarding lessons. We went to get the group lessons, but we were the only ones there at the time and got personal lessons.

If it was just me I would have just learned trial and error, but did the lessons for her. Def learned all the basics in a short while and was going down the hill with ease in no time She wasn’t as successful but still loved it.

I hate watching girls learn how to do stuff like that. They always suck and complain.

i thought we were talking about snowboarding here?

PM Yeambau, he’s an instructor at HV; if you’re willing to go in the evenings, I’m sure he’ll teach you for a few drinks at the bar after. I’ve heard great reviews about him teaching from the people at HV. That way it’ll just cost you rental and a lift ticket (If you go Mon-Wed nights you can get a 2-4-1 lift ticket with a coupon from McDs, or specially marked Extreme Milk caps).

He’s out teaching his GF today, doing lessons all day tomorrow, and meeting me and a friend of mine down there to teach her Monday Night.

Definitely rent the first few times out, it’s not worth wasting your $$ on buying gear if it’s something you find out isn’t for you.

first off, learnasnowsport.net has a 20% coupon for the month of january good at a number of places. at HV if you choose to do a group learn to ride lesson, the rental and 8 hr lift ticket are included - though it is only supposed to be for the lift at the bunny hill. it was right around 50 bucks with the 20% off.

i just went with a buddy this week and took a lesson first because he was nervous to teach a girl, then we went on a few different hills because no one checks the lift tickets once it gets busy.

Getting off the lift was the part I hated the most when I first started.
If you have access to snowboards, you can try at some local sledding hill or emery to give you some kind of idea what your in for.

get lessons for the gf. I took a girl last year and she refused to take a lesson. one good slam from catching the heel side edge and we left. i was pissed.

she is 100% down for a lesson or 2. and so am i, im always down to learn a few thinks from a pro rather than just trial and error.

learning to snowboard is pretty easy, balancing is pretty easy, it’s easy to turn left… i had trouble turning right lol, i went to HV 2 weeks ago and tried snowboarding for the first time… there are lessons going on all day, you can honestly just sit there and listen to the instructor and not pay, you just wont get attention lol. i effectively made it down the hills with only falling twice per hill lol, and i only went for like 2 hours.
i switched back to skiing though because im wayyy better at skiing and i wanted to do harder hills, and i wasnt good enough at snowboarding.

I would say go down sideways the first few times, and then experience turning left and right, and being able to get the board back sideways. and then start going straight down after you get the basic understanding of turning and slowing down.
honestly it’s pretty natural feeling once you get on the board. You will learn quickly what will make you fall and what wont.

You always want to heel the board and not toe it, when you’re on your heels, dont lean forward or get scared, you will fall forward. it’s alot easier to fall forward than it is backwards, so dont even worry about it

holiday valley has a way better bunny hill than KB, but i think KB has easier “easy” hills

oh i just noticed who posted this lol, i think a few people are going tomorrow maybe, maybe tag along… i would go too if there were more “sucky” people snowboarding lol, otherwise ill ski

i also want to try ski-boarding… looks like a lot of fun

id totally be down to go next sunday with some people to either place, im working all day tomarrow.

I used to board like 10 years ago. Havent been on once since. I’d love to get back into it though. I stopped when I fell and did a face plant resulting in a shard of ice impaling through my lower jaw and coming out just infront of my tongue. and yes. it hurt like fuck.

I first learned @ KB. I did the bunny hill a few times then my friend made me go down the bigger trails. I was scared at first but I learned fast and I looked like any other snowboarder who’s been going for years by the end of the day.

HV is good too but it doesn’t seem too beginner friendly but I haven’t seen their bunny hill.
