Leaving NY?

haha. i was just saying to bittler yesterday the same thing. i don’t know why i sit around and wait for a vacation when i can just move there, bartend at night and clean rental houses or something and then spend over 90% of my day barefoot.

 i’m leaving because of the dying juggalo scene. when was the last time ICP even came to buffalo?

Hell yah!

my family actually left a few years ago and went to NC for my dad’s job. i didn’t go with them for silly reasons. for the last two years i’ve been staying in buffalo because my job has allowed me to go to school on again off again and it’s been great pay for someone with a high school diploma. due to company restructures though, i’m not really too committed anymore and that decent pay will be going away sometime early next year.

if i’m going, i’m going in september because that’s when my lease is up.

I’m staying put as well for a few reasons.for now lol

  1. the rental properties are all here and would be kind of tough to run them out of area but possible.
  2. GM powertrain.Really going over the #'s of this newest buyout they’re giving($80K cash and $25k off a new car for my senority). On the other hand where would I get a job making $28/hr with full benies with no Degree.Just trying to crunch the #'s if I can really “retire” right now.
  3. downright lazy.Would just be a pain in the balls to move.

We talked about it a few yrs ago to sell the smaller rentals and keep the Commercial ones and going to SC,VA,FL but nothing ever came of it.Now the little guy changes alot of things too

XTC,
Are you regreting the buyout now that GM is talking back lockport?I head a few peopel saying if they knew that they would’ve stayed.I guess there is a rumor they can send us to Delphi to work if we are laid off.

Buy a new SS camaro for ~10K or a zosex.

Or 2 cobalts for free!

I’m buying a Silvy Crew Cab LTZ or a Sierra Denali this week so the timing could be a little better.I’ll prob give to my buddy formoney I owe him on a couple apt. building purchase.“IF” I decide to take it.Such a huge decision that will affect the rest of my life.

No, because we still have a contract that pays me the lower rate of 15.50 an hour which is’nt bad but not a wage I’m ready to settle at. I am young with no kids, and I really want to live the full time student lifestyle ya know? This summer has been a blast so far.

GM buying the Lockport site could mean two things:

  1. They close Rochester and send all work to Lockport which would have basically locked me in for decades.

  2. GM is more able to send our work to Mexico at a faster rate, so it would only be a matter of time till I was forced to take lay off. During the 3 years I have worked there I have seen 4 whole departments get moved to Mexico.

GM will be filing BK before Monday and your contract will reflect Delphi’s current contract. So the era of the highly paid auto worker is almost over.

  1. During last contract negotiations, management pushed hard to reduce our wages to 9/hr. Whats to say that new hires won’t take it in the ass when GM negotiates a new contract under BK?

I was wondering what was going on with the wages.I CAN’T believe they didn’t touch our wages but maybe they left them alone as if they file BK the best they will hit them then. This way they(GM) would get the best of both worlds. What the union ave up last week then hit the wages next time around(after they file).I’m 100% signing up for the buy-out then have 60 days to change my mind but at least I’m signed up

Maybe its just me, not being a Buffalo native and therefore not knowing many people here before moving, but I know more people who have moved to Buffalo in the last 5 years than people who have left. And all of them, to their own surprise, absolutely love it here. They actually are encouraging friends and family to move here.

It seems that a lot of people who grew up in Buffalo have the “grass is greener” mentality, and are certain everywhere is better than here.

The one thing I will agree with is the local and state gov’t are hindering the area and changes need to be made. But even with that obstical, the city has improved greatly since I have been here.

can I ask what it is you and some of the people you know who have moved here particularly like about Buffalo? Other than bars open until 4am?

I always love it when people say “I can’t move because my friends are in Buffalo and I don’t know anyone in XXX”.

Are you seriously that odd that you can’t make new friends, or keep in touch with your old ones?

In my experience most people seem to have a rather negative view of where they grew up, at least until later in life. And people always get in a rut, even if they live in NYC. People always feel that there isn’t anything to do, or anything to eat or whatever when rarely its just because we become complacent and fall in to easy comfortable habits.

In reality, it is all what you make of it and it is more about living in the type of area than the particular city.

I don’t think I’d move back to WNY, but I’d hardly call it the arm pit of America. I always have a great time when I’m back up during the summer.

This is how I have always felt…

Im not gonna lie, we do need some serious changes to the WNY political structure and to be honest, I dont know if they will ever dig us out of the hole were in, but geographically and socially speaking, WNY is not too bad of a place. 500 miles from several major cities, an hour from ski and beach, a few decent school systems, and yes, a great bar life.

I get a huge hard on to blue collar towns so if I ever leave here, Pittsburgh and Cleveland look like the spots for me, mostly because they resemble a thriving Buffalo. Sports teams believe it or not are also a huge thing we dont really think about. Yeah other cities may have more teams but who else is as passionate as Buffalo fans?

The grass is greener just about everywhere else…

I lived in Dallas and DC both great places to live…both had downsides but are still much better then Buffalo.

I can only think of a few places slightly worse to live…Newport News, VA and maybe Waco…

So why are you here? You should have a pretty impressive resume by now right?

^ you are so 1137

I am going to reevaluate my situation in a couple years…Currently stuck here waiting for GF to finish school and taking care of a relative…

You could be a fucking idiot and falling into a 65k+ IT job in Dallas, Virginia, and a lot of other places…That doesn’t happen here…

And yes my resume is very impressive

Wat?

The people here and in other blue-collar cities with shitty weather are so passionate about their sports teams because there’s nothing else to do. When you go everywhere else, you see it firsthand, that when the teams start to suck, people stop supporting them because there’s other stuff to do.
I was just at a Padres game this weekend and they had a “5 for $5” promo, where $5 gets you a ticket to the game, a hot dog, peanuts, popcorn, and a drink. They still weren’t close to capacity, because there’s a million other things for people to do and the team sucks. Here, the Sabres and Bills are a bunch of fucking losers that miss the playoffs year after year and never win championships, they raise prices, and still get a ton of people, because there’s no alternative.

Haha, I know and thats what makes it great. Like how these third world countries can be soooo passionate at one soccer game and everyone in the city can unite for one common cause on those days to get wild. Thats what I love lol.

Take your SoCal beaches and cool zoos and whatever else there is to do that is SOOOO much more entertaining than Buffalo. Ill take a Bills Tailgate over any of that any day, even if its only 7 times a year.

You need to remember, what is joy if there is no such thing as disappointment, and as depressing as that sounds (in regards to the city we live in), I love the idea that I have 4 winter months where im bursting at the seams to get my car on the road and then right as fall nears, you got snowboarding and such.

That’s just my take, obviously not many people share that perspective lol.
