^^^^driving aggresively and track/ drifting will wear out EVERYTHING faster, VLSD included.
One LSD upgrade that I heard of, was to swap in an R200 VLSD from the Q45. Was hoping someone here might know more about this swap, since I’ve only heard people in the states attempt it. I may have access to this diff, but is it worth it?
The R200 is the same as whut i have the R220 IIRC but the only difference is the Gear Ratio’s. You need to be pushing some serious power if you install one of those or else your car will be and feel slow as hell. I had specs on all this stuff when i did my swap ill try and find you thr info and get back to you. The R200 is found in the 300zx too.
Just another tid bit, the R200 dates back many years, as far back as the early Z cars. All 2+2 280Z models from 1976 IIRC on had the R200, albeit not VLSD but an R200 differential none the less. I know my 77 2+2 has an R200, and if no one buys my VLSD, you know where its going…
vlsd lose their viscosity as they warm up, so they cant take the abuse of motorports such as drifting… if you are serious about going to the track, save the money upgrading to vlsd and just buy a real mechanical lsd…
My friend’s 89 SOHC is in fact VLSD … and it wasn’t swapped in. I think it was an option maybe (?) because I’ve seen a few in the wreckers that were also LSD.
An open diff will spin both tires no problem. Try kicking the tail out to the left … then kick it out to the right. An open diff will drift to the right easier than to the left.
The R200 in your 240s is the short neck R200,
87-89 300ZX [Z31] is also an R200 LSD but it is a long neck clutch style, which is a lot stronger than the VLSD. But it’s not quite a bolt in on the 240, you’ll need the 300ZX half shafts and possibly a companion shaft as well.
the 88 Limited Edition had the VLSD … but I believe it is also needs halfshafts and some pretty involved work to fit.
You guys would be a lot better off finding an S14 LSD … unless you want the beefy clutch unit.
On a different note, I’ve heard that 4x4 pathfinders use an R200 diff in the front locker …
I’ve also heard the Hyundai Tiburon and some Suuubies also use the R200
Whoops … brain fart. They use the R200 carrier/ring/pinion … not the “diff” or pumpkin.
When I said “not swapped in” … I mean we didn’t do it. If it failed at some point, maybe it’s easier to get the VLSDs? :dunno: maybe it was a replacement diff … or he’s burned it up and welded the spider gears … hehehe
I’ve done the wheels off the ground test on it (I was going to steal it till I found out it wouldn’t fit my S12) the b*stard has my gold lattice rims on his now. Heh, good thing I only own 3 of them.
As for the S13s in the junkers … they might have been 91+s I wouldn’t know the “diff” lol … but the ones that didn’t have frozen calipers spun both as well.
Yeah … I was reading a post on the S12 board. Apparently pathfinder guys are getting the clutch LSDs out of Z31s for their front diffs. There’s supposedly a company that is rebuilding the Z31 diff with super duty clutches for use in the Pathfinder, but it would work for the S12/13.
But you have to have the diff, send it to them, etc … probably just as easy to get a Z31 clutch yourself, and just take it somewhere to have it rebuilt.
FYI for you guys looking for a cheap upgrade just find a Infinity J30. You can pull the whole “pumkin” off and it will bolt up to a 240sx. It has a Vlsd.
There are two, long nose and short nose R200s. You cannot physically swap the entire assembly, but the internals (the parts that limit the slip) swap easily.
Olllldd topic but i thought id bring it up as i have a queston on maintaining my new VLSD. SO i have one with quite a bit of Kms on it…effectiveness of the viscous fluid prob aint great? who knows when it was changed etc etc. If i drain the fluids from the drainplug on the diff is that gear oil and old viscous fluid coming out??? meaning the viscous fluid is a addictive i add to the diff then i change the diffs oil? OR Is the viscous fluid is completly seperate from the diffs oil how do i go about changing that? Ive never looked or noticed prices on viscous fluid. Will CT carry it? Cost? what am i best off doing without spending much. the diff already has w/e oil was in it and viscous fluid, theres no need for me to drain it unless im changing all the fluids. Any helps greatly appreciated. Btw do all super hicas models come with ABS? thanks

change the diff fluid to a synthetic gear oil like Redline GL-5 75W90.
You will notice a huge difference. I changed mine last year at the beginning of the season and after 4 track days I started noticing it start to slip a bit more. That was after alot of hard driving too, like parking lot drifting and other stuff.
Huge difference tho, for the $30 it will cost you for the fluid…Do it!!
Ok so ive got the fluids all figured out…Now that the car is at my house im ready to take out the diff and driveshaft cuz this 91 super hicas doesnt have ABS…meaning the driveshaft needs to be swapped  …w/e…the back casing is by farrrr diffrent than my open diff and wtf is the mini steering rack mounted to??? I have two cars i want to keep them both running but am i going to be able to throw my open diff back in this super hicas car?? i want the damn LSD diff in my 89 badd…but its going to be a slut in a 1/2 job taking out this diff from the 91’ and i need to kno 110% that this diff is going to be direct bolt in to my 89 knowing that all i have to do extra is swap the driveshafts and the open diff will drop back into the 91’ and hicas will still funtion. help pleaase!!
