LSD questions

OKay here goes:

Did any 240s come equiped with LSD stock? Which ones?
What’s the diff between LSD and VLSD?
What are the pros and cons of these systems?

EDIT:
okay, i’ve done some research, but one thing i can’t seem to find is how to test if i have LSD… some say raise the back and spin one wheel, if the other moves in the other direction you have LSD, others say that the wheel needs to move in the same direction. Also the burn out test… if you get 2 stripes you have LSD… i don’t buy it.

Someone help me out here.

From my understanding they are all VLSD’s in Canada on the 91-94, and if it is a VLSD then it takes a little bit of wheel spin for the Viscous fluid to lock the plates tograther and lock it.

All except the HICAS ones, right… and what about the SOHC S13As?
I know the US models were all over the map with the features… according to US spec sheets any S13 with ABS has it, except the coupes which doesn’t have ABS… which creates even more confusion because my coupe does have ABS…

man i’m lost, time to look for an Orange sticker… lol

I wouldnt worry about it as long as you got your car from canada, some very smart marketing guy added it in for the “Canadian Winters” if you want to be sure put a jack under your rear axel and spin one tire, from my understanding (correct me if im wrong) if there is alot of recistance then its a VLSD, and if theres none and it spins easily then its open, and if theres just a little bit then your Vicous fluid has woren out, which cant be replaced with out a new diferential because the Viscous fluid is in a sealed compartment. Good luck

HICAS equipped S13s do have a VLSD 8)

great… i’m still not sure whether i have it or not… i guess i have to test it.

Thanks

u have an 90…no lsd u gots an open diff…i found out :frowning: was hoping mybe previous owner put an lsd in :frowning: got it on the hoast and spun one back tire and the other spun the other way :frowning:

i’ll lift my car tommorrow and look, I did a burn out and i did get 2 stripes, nut i don’t think that’s a fair test.

Andrew do you have ABS on your S13?

hmm i was under the understanding that stock no 89-90 had it…but just jack the back up and see if the other wheel spins in a different direction.

Awesome info thanks.

all sohc 240s come peglegged… all dohc in canada come with vlsd…

in the states its the same for the sohc, but dohc has vlsd on the hicas package… and in some other instances

Wrong. My 90 SOHC has LSD.
After days of intense research I have discovered that upon testing for the LSD, when jacink up the rear end and spinning one tire while in gear, and the other tire spins in the OPPOSITE direction means you have LSD.

This is also known as and referd to as PosiTraction, which is the name of the LSD on Chevy cars.

There’s only one sure fire way to know for sure and that is to call Nissan and do a VIN check.

PosiTrack is a type of LSD we have VSLD in our cars and the tire should spin the same way if u have VSLD if it spin’s the other way u dont ur peglegged.

Though i did read somewhere on the LE versions (Fully Loaded) they did test out the VSLD. But again if your tire spins theother way then you have an open diff

if you do a burnout and both tires dont smoke, you dont have a working LSD. to clairify, go around a turn and slowly apply throttle mid turn, if you hear the inside tire spinning and as you add throttle the tail doesn’t come out right away, again you know you do not have a working LSD. Either you have an open diff or an old worn LSD.

Correction VSLD :stuck_out_tongue:

There is a Difference. 8)

EDIT - Oh and its possible to do a perfect 2 wheel burout with an open diff.
I know just look at the marks infront of my house.

Same here im using a 1992 VSLD outta coupe and im content with it but i herd they can wear out is that true?

and LSD can be anything, VLSD, posi-track, whatever, the V is just viscus.

Gottcha.

Question still stands can my VSLD still wear out?

I know forexample one of the track days i participated in when it started to heat up it wasnt gripping as much but once it cooled down it was back to normal. But can extensive use like driving aggressive or tracking/drifting the car alot wear out the diff in the long run?
