As some have already stated the 13" MBP suck. Just about as gay as a netbook at that point. And DEF get the antiglare high rez screen…it kicks ass. Glossy screens SUCK.
Other than that…do NOT max the ram out on the configuration IMO. Buy 3rd party legit branded ram and save some $$$.
The hardware is superior and the OS is tightly controlled. I imaged 100 new MBP for students a few weeks ago and we had I believe 2 DOA. Of course 0 would be better but let’s be realistic here…shit can happen.
The Mac’s aren’t immune to virus issues but still pretty damn close. I have seen 2 Mac virus since 1992 when I started working on them. I see 1-2 virus per week on PC’s at work…not to mention side jobs.
Eh he’s buying overpriced hardware he should pay for the ram too and from my experience especially working at a school for a little bit macs don’t like 3rd party ram that much
I have never experienced any issues with 3rd party RAM being install into Intel based Apple hardware. Back in the PPC days it happened on occasion, but it happened to just about all hardware then.
The hardware is not substantially overpriced. Irrespective of that, what superior alternatives are available?
Hardware isn’t “overpriced” if it’s better quality IMO. That’s based on my almost 2 decades of mac experience (Since 1992). And prior to and including all this time I also have used/owned/supported PC’s. My point is I’m far from a typical fanboy where I fall on every product Apple puts out. In fact to be honest I’m a PC user outside of work, and even my main computer at work is a PC. I run Apple Remote Desktop on an Imac for remote support at work mainly.
You’re way off on the ram thing. I have had I want to say 2 mac issues out of tons where some 3rd party ram didn’t work and it was due to a incompatibility of factory and aftermarket being mixed. That happens in the PC’s as well…but even there it’s fairly rare. I’m not counting the times people didn’t order in matched pairs when called for (powermac G5 for example). If you’re having that many issues you/they are buying crap or the wrong ram or you’re installing it while dancing in leopard slippers on a shag carpet. LOL

To clarify because the above doesn’t sound like a good mac review if I say I don’t run them myself. I can rebuild my own virus issues and support myself so I run with the PC. The average numbskull would have much better luck with a mac and they will spend more on the hardware but are likely to make up for that up front cost in not having to pay for virus removal and data backup. I get $120 on average for a proper virus removal. Since 92’ I’ve seen 2 worm/virus issues on the mac personally. Again…I’ve seen an average of 2 per week with the PC. That adds up. I bet TCO is actually cheaper with the mac. 8)

Even with PPC it was rare like you said. If you mixed speeds or 2 sided chips with 1 sided chips you may get a conflict, though few and far between.
Keep in mind I am a old mofo guys, I remember (and still have some) 30 pin simms even. Goddamn I’m old. LOL
Meh. We dropped like $2k on my wife’s macbook pro a few years ago and have a ton of problems with they keyboard freezing. It’s a hardware issue, as it happens whether she’s on OSX or boots into windows. With the power of the google I’ve found that it’s a common problem with no solution.
So they’re not perfect, but otherwise she loves it. I encouraged her to get it because she doesn’t take care of stuff like that at all and between the aluminum case and the break away power cord it was much better for her. Seriously, that’s why we bought it. Of course for the price I could have bought 3 comparable windows laptops…
10.6.X seems to work fine, 10.7 works fine, just can’t log into any network accounts, so it’s either a local account or nothing. Mixed environments just…blehh. Dislike.
Apple is funny like that just like they killed off the XServe and XSan they were making a hugeeee push to get into the Government and Corp environments then one day decided it didn’t align with their goals and dumped everything.
^Oh god no. It seems (I’m guessing) that Macs work best on a network with a OSX Server and Open Directory environment. I cringe everytime I have to order a Mac for work.
I have always thought Macs were over priced. With a little knowledge you can build a equal rig for 1/2 the price. I only bought my MBA for the extreme portability and ended up using it on a larger monitor for web and Photoshop work. No, its no power beast but it definitely is good for 90% of the people out there and I have had zero problems.
The new ones have i5’s in them so its more than enough power and the SSD drive is amazing for load times.
I am the furthest from computer savy, i bought my mac book pro in 2007, since then, it has been dropped down a flight of stairs, knocked off the couch arm rest NUMEROUS times, dropped in the sand dunes in Arizona ETC.
I also have downloaded a shit load of music, movies…as well as watched pr0n. I have never had a problem with pop ups or anything. It has def slowed through out the years but that is because I do ZERO maintenance to it whatsoever.
Only problem I had with it was the keyboard locked up a few times, but they offered an upgrade years ago to fix it… oh yeah, and the bat stays charged for about 20 minutes now. lol.
If you are doing any type of video editing, don’t get an Air it will be hot. I have a windows based desktop, a windows based laptop, a macmini for a media server and my air. I always end up using my air unless I am using any of my CAD programs. If you are using it as a internet, clerical, random crap machine and you travel a bunch get an air, otherwise get a pro
For my example of overpriced hardware I’ll use the Mac mini previous generation foe an example since the Mac books were basically the same thing: they were shipped with a core 2 duo 2gig ddr3 memory and a 160gb Sata hard drive for a price of $550 I can build the same computer with the same stuff for $150-$200 and might be able to get a bigger hard drive and more memory just saying
