Apple vs. PC

Ok tech nerds, I need to be educated.

What is really the difference between the two? I have a few friends with Mac desktops and one with a macbook and they both swear its the best thing ever and PCs are a pathetic waste of space that only a lowlife loser would use :zong:

And ive gotta admit, when I go in the Apple store and start playing with a balls to the wall Imac, I am intrigued. But then I look at the price and im like http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm259/DIRTYELECTRO/boggled.gif

I mean, other than the OS, what is really the difference between PC and Apple? I know Apple has the hot chick with perky breasteses in the e-commercials, and PC is the fat broad, http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm259/DIRTYELECTRO/bwahaha.gif but to me it looks like really both PC and Apple use similar hardware, but youre just paying a premium for the Mac OS??

Again I dont really know about this stuff, but I am looking at getting another laptop soon to run my DJ setup, and Id like to get some info before I spend the dough.

Correct.
Apple basically uses high-end PC hardware. You can get the same stuff in a Windows laptop.

Word, thats kind of what I was assuming. Ok then, stupid noob question. If you really like the apple OS, and they use the same hardware, then couldnt you just install the Apple OS on a regular laptop? http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm259/DIRTYELECTRO/scratchchin.gif

for how much it costs to build a good PC laptop, comparing it to a similar macbook, I just can’t justify spending that much money.

Hell even my 1.6GHz core duo Dell with 2.5GB of ram is fast enough to run CS3, multiple browsers, music, and other shit without lagging. I’m fine with it.

and the ignorance continues…

If you don’t care enough to correct the ignorance, why not STFU?

Apple puts a check in their install CD’s to make sure you’re using one of their machines. There are workarounds that let you do this with a patched install DVD, if you’re so inclined.
example: http://dailyapps.net/2007/10/hack-attack-install-leopard-on-your-pc-in-3-easy-steps/

The difference is the software and that Apple has finely tuned their drivers for the specific hardware.

Apple has locked down OS X to only run on their specific hardware. There are groups that have hacked OS X to run on non-Apple hardware but it is not a simple “pop in disc and install” solution.

Edit: Joe beat me

Brilliant and well thought out post! http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm259/DIRTYELECTRO/crbaby.gif

Come on man, if you know Macs well and disagree, then let’s hear why. I am honestly curious because the Mac stuff LOOKS sweet, but I am just trying to understand what the advantages of a Mac are over a PC. I basically want to buy a Mac because it looks cool  But I need someone to talk me into it with common sense on why its really worth it :gotme:

Using a hacked copy of OSX can be sketchy. There is a wiki that is updated rather often of computers and components, and how well they work with an OSX install. Drivers/hardware support are the biggest issue when installing on anything but mac hardware.

is it worth it? That is for you to decide!

what are your needs? What do you use your computer for?

werd, had it installed on my computer for a short while (honestly, I’ve been using windows for so long, I found it counter productive to use OSx)

as for the hardware, it’s all pretty much the same these days with the exception of the motherboard and some other junk but the audio, video, memory, processor, etc is all made by the same suppliers

Go with whatever you can work faster on IMO. Also, if you go Apple, don’t upgrade the memory through them, you’ll pay out the ass for it.

Hardware is mostly the same, just much better packaging. If not a tad towards the proprietary end of the spectrum as far as some parts go. As stated above it’s possible to run OS:X on a normal PC these days as it’s all the same but it can be a bit sketchy.

Laptops are rather nice.

I was working on that…

it’s not about fast vs. slow or pretty vs. ugly…

the reason for the success of apple is their control over the “user experience”. You get software tested and designed to work with exact hardware vs. things that should work in theory. You get cutting edge technology which does make a difference, things like a magnetic power cord, instant on/off. you get a place that you can walk into and have somebody fix your shit right there. When they couldn’t fix my headphone port they overnighted it to their regional center and then overnighted it back to me so I had very minimal downtime. You buy other products like ipods or routers and shit just works, and you get bonus toys like the fact I provide my stereo with optical out from my airport (router) so I can play music from itunes with the same quality as a $1000 cd player.

I could go on and on and on… I honestly didn’t care / believe much of this apple hype until I owned a $1000 macbook (OH NO, SO MUCH MONEY compared to a PC). now I couldn’t imagine going back.

and you can do just about any of the tasks you might need to acomplish on either a PC or a MAC… but if you know how to do it on both, you’ll probably pick the mac because you know they’ll be less drama.

See: Apple humpers, this page. Particularly the “it just works” thing. http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=iphone

 Best thing I’ve read in a loooong time.

yes, pc’s are for poor people

I wouldn’t say you can do EVERYTHING you can do on MacOSX vs PC. Gaming for one is not as good as on the PC and I am sure there is much more software available than for OSX. If I were you, I would get the Mac book and then dual boot it with Windows so you have the best of both worlds.

PM Sherm so he can show you how to set up the right click for your mouse.

lol still thinking about this eh mikey? I must admit i hated apple stuff when i was in college becuase i wasnt familiar with it. I still am not, however after our friend give me alittle rundown on it i was seriously impressed. I’d be willing to try it out if i ever need to replace my laptop one day.
