Motorcrossx23's GS750 Cafe Build

nothing wrong with that, flux has its place. its actually better for if youre outside and its windy or something, easier to keep the weld going without the gas blowing around. you also can usually weld thicker stuff with it compared to gas on the same machine.

So a little update:

I found a 1980 550E gas tank on eBay for .99 + 29.99 shipping, bid on it…and won. So now I have what I need to start making the cafe tail of the bike.

I shipped my 16" rear wheel to Florida in return for an 18" rear wheel. That way I can run a 19" front and 18" rear, much better look.

And finally… I bought this:

So I could do this:

And end up with stuff like this:

That’s all for now

MOAR polishing!

Finished polishing the breather box

Now that I got my practice with the buffer in, it’s time to move to a real part:

I started with this…

Notice all the 30 year old foam, road grime, chain lube, etc… BOO!

So I went to town with some keytone, let the foam dissolve, then hit it with some Simple Green, then some water, etc etc etc…till you end up with this:

My goal is to get a finish similar to this:

So, I’ve been sanding, buffing, sanding, buffing, and polishing like a mad man…

First, I had to get some heavy duty paint stripper to get rid of the the old hard rock clear coat from the case covers…

Went to town buffing and ended up with these…

My next step is the get the other covers buffed and polished, then make my way on to the engine…it desperately needs a cleaning and painting.

those came out AMAZING

shiny!

did you get tracking numbers for the extra tank and the rear wheel? we have a stance to workout and a seat to fab lol. Once those are done this thing is gonna FLY together honestly.

oh, and rearsets…

and bars…

Tank says it’s in Nebraska, shipping is USPS ground so it could take anywhere from 4-13 days, so figure maybe this week lol.

Rear wheel was shipped Wednesday from Kissimmee, FL…I assume it’s USPS ground as well, so anywhere from 3-5 days shipping.

Rearsets I’m looking for, and bars…probably going to scratch bars and go with clip-ons.

I’m hoping to get the motor all prepped and pretty while I wait for the parts, that way I don’t have two projects at two different houses lol.

bring your forks over next time your here, I’ll mic. the diameter too figure out options for fabbing clip-ons…I have some frugal ideas lol. I made my pair for $11 hahaha

^That’s what I figured lol, we seem to be pretty damn good at eyes eye-crometers from that kinda stuff so it shouldn’t be too difficult.

eye-crometer is an invaluable tool to have, truly priceless. lol

coming along nicely

Great progress.

A little update:

Came home from work to find these at my door…

One had this:

One had this:

The 18" rear wheel was traded for my 16" rear wheel. Straight up.

The tank I got off of eBay for 99 cents, it’s going to be cut up for a cafe tail.

time to make some precise measurements for seat construction and how far to shorten the rear of the frame beyond the tire…

^Hahahahah. I didn’t get the smiley till I stared at it, then I literally spit at my screen.

Ummmm…bump.

So.

This happened:

A little of this:

Definitely some of this:

Then THIS shit happened:

Which lead to this:

And this:

And finally to wrap of the night, this:

Tonight, the bike went from a GS750/box of parts…

…to a cafe racer.

 Nick, we (you) kicked butt.

doin big thangs

FYI chris, I found my digital micrometer, you have 35mm diameter fork tubes…same as mine lol. Soooooooo now we can run to M&M and see if any bikes there have a steel lower triple clamp with 35mm forks to build clip-ons for $11 hahaha.
