anyone have an idea on how much it would cost to do the conversion and what is a good place where i can get it done. thanks
Philip do you know the weight difference of the 5.0l over the KA? How would you compensate for it?
why not drop in a VH45DE instead? If you are going through all that trouble, might as well keep it n the family. Besides, rated power #'s for the VH are higher (278 HP, 286 TQ).
my buddy sourced the motor for about a grand, get a z32 5 speed box, custom bell housing, and then you have a manual box in there too.
or get the rustang motor, that would still be a killer swap.
Or just save yourself the hassle and buy a rustang.
Or swap in an RB motor, which gives you power #'s similiar to the VH, but is readily available in terms of install kits and availability.
It would seem like the ideal swap into the "S " chassis then.
Not too much more weight, N/A power, gobs of torque, readily available parts. Maybe David should start fabricating his own conversion kit for the masses.
Hey guys
I looked into doing the swap with a Rx7 instead of a 240…Although I know its much more common with the Rx7 ive heard of 240’s with the swap…and I doubt it would cost near 10g’s but I have no information to back that up LOL
with the RX7 it would be about 5g altogether. which is not bad at all, and you dont have to worry about turbo maintaince.
Very interesting swap indeed but the troubles I can see in this conversion if not done extremely well are not worth the $$$… for now.
At school, we’ve dropped in a 350 into a Dodge Shadow. TONS of work to be done and countless hours spent from paper to acutally making the pieces. To our luck and amazement, the stock hood closes properly and the engine fits snug beneath it, making the car LOOK totaly stock! We’ve got several driveshafts lying around, and hopefully we can custom fit one for the RWD conversion.
My verdict on the 5.0 swap:
Unless you’ve got the time and money to back it up, I wouldn’t recommend it. But it could be done.
To the best of my knowledge, the older 302’s in the 80’s mustangs were only rated at about 180-200hp, sure it’s easy to get more out of it, and would scare the crap out of kids in civics, but is it worth the money and time?
Now the DOHC cobra motor on the otherhand…
I believe a NEO member (who I also thinks posts on SON - red98s14)
is currently doing a 5.0L swap on his S13 hatch.
Here’s a thread you can check out:

Looks to be a slow going process, but a process nonetheless
^^^ Hmmm… interesting…
I’m still thinking of what kind of driveshaft/diff/halfshafts would or could be used.
There was a dude who came out to the big SQ1 meet that had a V8 in a 240 IIRC… Anyone else remember him?
thanks for all your reply guys but i am sure it will cost me alot of money and mods.i geuss i am gonna do more research and ask my friends dad which is a ford mechanic and see if i can get a doner or motor for cheap.
what is rustang?
Oh noes! :pat:
Rustang is a play on words. Rusty Mustang.
Although I’m primarily a Bowtie(chevy) guy, the only envy I have about the mustang is the pushrod 302. 87-94 the stock hp rating was a conservative 225hp. However this motor responds extremely well to bolt ons and there is no shortage of them.
Considering the Q45 weighs in at over 5000lbs, and the average 240sx at 2800lbs, the weight difference alone would make the VH motor stand out over the Ford motor, not to mention the extra 50HP. you are right though, aftermarket for these motor are nil to none, although i did help fabricate an intake for my buddies '91 Q45. And if you have ever gone for a boot in one of those q’s, even the late models, you would be very impressed by the gobbs of readily available torque, even on a motor with over 200k on the dash. I thik a 3" exhaust would go a long way with this motor, but i suppose if you want silly 400+HP #'s in your ride, this may not be a good route, like Phil had mentioned.
yeah but with the 5.0 you can go down to your local speed shop and buy goodies for it…lots of goodies…its probably the most supported powerplant ever built
^^^ I find it hard to believe that. (Just my opinion)
Not only can you get TONS of parts for the ford engine, they are also fairly cheap if you find a good supplier. Nonetheless, same goes for the chev SB. Ultimately, I’d like to have a 454 in a '69 Camaro SS. <— Bid dream but hopefully… one day… …
