My Boat Rant

sorry for the long post…just aggravated :frowning:

Well we got our boat in late this summer and just got it in last week…my uncle changed the fluids, charged the battery and took it down and put it in…he said he killed the battery try’n to get it run’n and didn’t have time to mess with it and was gonna work on it next time he went down.

Well a couple friends and i went down Sunday afternoon to get it going. We get down to it and find out after we uncover it that it took on water sitting…we figured it was from the rain during the week & since the battery was dead the bilge pump wouldn’t be doing its job…hooked up the jump pack we brought & the the pump still wasn’t working…found out Bilge pump Fuse was blown…threw a new fuse in let it pump out the water, got it running with the jump pack … took it out for a ride thinking it was charging the battery and made it down the river like half mile and it died on us, the jump back wouldn’t start it cuz it wasn’t a strong enough Jump Pack for the Pig Block thats in the boat it would only do it one time which was when it was fully charged…there was a barge coming, we had to flag down a boat passing by to get us out of the way b4 we got hit by the barge and got a tow down to our dock…found out the Alternator is beat and we were running on the remainder juice left in the battery

Told My Dad about the issue and he said he would talk to my uncle and have him take care of it when he gets back from vacation in a couple days, and not to worry about or go down to the boat till the issue gets fixed

Well a buddy and i was bored Monday evening and i had a bad feeling about the boat cuz i heard it was supposed to rain this week a good bit and wanted to get the Alternator off and get it rebuilt or just get a new 1 depending on the price & to get the battery so we can charge it regardless of what my old man said earlier cuz without juice the bilge pump cant pump out the water it gets in it if it rains real hard…so we went down and only to find it has almost as much water in it as Sunday again :(…which would explain y the fuse was blown on the bilge pump yesterday, cuz the pump was probably running constantly and over heated and blew the fuse the marina owner said probably happened… we decided after talking with the marina owner that instead of them keeping a eye on it till i talk to the family on if the marina should get the leak taking care of or if we would handle it our self, to just pull it out of the water while we get the alternator rebuilt and to check the seals around the drive line to try to find out where the hell the water is coming in, since it took on that much water just sitting 1 day

so the Marina owner said he would get the backhoe cuz thats what they use to pull boats in and out with & grab our trailer…we got the boat about 100 ft up the road on the trailer & the winch rope on the trailer decided to snap and the boat decided to start to slowly slide back like 2’ on the trailer and teeder there…luckily the guy could react fast and dropped the bucket cuz thats were they have the trailer ball and the boat stopped sliding…that was my sign to get out of the boat and walk the rest of the way to the lot after we did the rope

so i’m glad i ignored my dad and went down, cuz in a couple days it prob would have been ugly…

Can anybody suggest a place to get it rebuilt asap and for a decent price

holy shit, that’s one nasty string of bad luck.

I dropped our boat off to get a biminy top, cover repaired, leakless packing gland installed. Those fuckers kept it for 10 days, and only touched the cover. Drop it back in while we waited for the gland…took on water, killed the battery, and bilge stopped functioning (it’s a '95 too). Seeing a 350 motor half under water is a sad sight to behold.

I got a call last night, the gland has arrived and the boat made it safely to the shop again, hopefully have back by the weekend.

Let me know if you need anything, I can get to the marina in about 20min from my house

ya seing my 454 in water over the starter was sad 2 days in a row…

actually i could prob use a hand once i get the Alternator back… if ya want

Also DyingWish…does ur boat take on any water when sitting ? i hear some do a little bit sitting ?

yeah, it does take on water while it sits. Usually none in the ski cabinet, and inch under the motor or so after a few days…I have two bilge pumps though, so it clears out pretty quickly.

My problem is the packing gland ( the sealing crap for around the propshaft) leaks a bit more than normal. They all leak, but they should leak all that much. The bilge should come on at most once an hour…mine is like every ten minutes. If I don’t use the boat for a while…it kills the battery. I just bought two new pumps, new battery and a leakless packing gland to combat this annoying problem. Hopefully this fixes it for good.

I can help whever you want, just let me know ahead of time

well Sunday the water was just comin around the battery to the left of the motor…and monday it wasnt as much maybe a 1-2" difference…

woot, it’s gonna be fun wrenching in that sucker…we’ll need a few 5yr olds to work for us I think, lol

u think its leaking alot more then it should for us leaving sunday around 8pm and i got there monday at like 6pm ?

lol…ya i know…the alternator wasn’t bad at all tho… there was just enough room to squeeze it out .

the marina owner son Greg, who is the kid that pumps the gas there with the jeep i think u asked about …he did the starter on it last summer and said it was a bitch …lol

oh and thats with no bilge pump fuse in it from sunday…we took it out cuz i thought the float was stuck cuz it never shut off but checked the float monday after i put the fuse back in and let it drain and it does shut off i guess cuz the battery was pretty low and the pump didnt have enough power to get the water out it just barely trickle out … and didnt want it to totally drain the battery dead or burn up the pump

if that much water comes in just overnight, you better look into it.

If it’s out of tha water now, pour a bucket of water in there and see where it comes out…add some food coloring to the water to make it easier.

k…wel when i call u …lol…but ya we didnt notice anything leaking bwhen it was in the lot after we recovered it…then we pulled the drain plug … we left it in to see if we notice any water coming out around the driveline area while we got ready to leave but didnt notice anything cuz that was the last thing we did, i bet a good 10 gals ish came out

geeze. sure that thing isnt a ford?

Found On River Dead??

Hurry and get that fixed so I can come out.

Yeah bud, you owe me a few tosses in the air on the tube. If there’s anything I can do to help, get at me.

i’m starting to wonder

i’ll let u guys know when its back up and running

Isn’t that just a standard GM alt.? You might be better off just getting one from Autozone or the such. And if you do take it off, take to autozone or Advance and have them check it. I had a friend, who will remain nameless, just replace two alt.s on his 88 camaro to find that the connector that energizes the field circuit was not making proper contact. So it might be worth checking it out before you get too in depth with waiting on a rebiuld and what not. And If you do need a rebuild, or just help in general give me a shout.

If my guy has the parts, and he almost always does, I can do the rebuild and have it back to you in less than a day.

ya i was talking with the owner & owners son of the Marina about the Alternator and he said the marine ones have some special casing and its like a $400 alt. and said its prob better to just get it rebuilt for the cost

Never knew I knew that, if I knew that…:ugh:
