Hell, you don’t even need a recorder, if some cop pulls you over and starts giving you shit and you tell him that hes being recorded his demeanor will change real fast.

I just tell them upfront. It usually shows that you have some background/knowledge of law and they just check whats up.

Best of luck though man looks like you got the shaft of law.
