N54 Bmw 335i wastegate/turbo rattles....

highly considering trading the car before any of this shitstorm happens haha.

S2K is nice but I prefer 4 doors and more the 2 seats…been thinking of getting another evo but it’s pretty ironic to go TO a dsm for the sake of reliability :o

Baldy are u still under warranty? I hope so for ur sake oh man

That’s where I am too. My car hasn’t given me a single issue, though. And I’m closing in on 80k miles.

I’m at 84k and I have zero issues also. Forums tend to make u paranoid tho.

fuckin BMW trying to be all techy and shit. Why couldn’t they just have used a regular crank-driven waterpump instead of some $500 electric water pump b.s.

I’m sorta liking the accord sport lol.

my evo was dead reliable and have friends with plenty of miles on theirs with no problems

there arent any 4 door cars that can compete head to head with the 335i IMO but reliability is more important than being the fastest to get to the grocery store

Sounds like either carbon build up on the valves or the cats are clogged up if the injectors were sticking open before they were replaced.

Could also be the turbos, almost all N54s have some sort of wastegate rattle but they could be worn out to the point of allowing a boost leak/ not building sufficient boost.

Thanks Goff. The car has 78k miles on it and I definitely hear the rattle that others are showing in some youtube vids. It’d be nice if the turbos were rock solid, but again… with this weird hesitate right around 3k… I’m kind of hoping that they are the problem.

I just got a hold of Adam and will be dropping it off Tuesday the 21st, the next available day. That’s 2 weeks away… must be crazy busy over there…

In the meantime, is there something I can do myself to clean the valves and/or cat of the possible build up?

If you cant get BMW to cover the walnut blasting, i just got all the tools and will be providing the service. Doing mine this weekend

How much are you charging for that?

I will know sunday night/monday once i get everything dialed in and set up. It will be WAY less that town BMW who charge over 700. Will also offer it for mini coopers if anyone has interest, ill just have to buy more wands

I had carbon cleaning done for 300, honestly it’s an hour maybe two of labor tops!! Very easy to do just need the adaptor/wands for the intake ports

If someone gets in done in an hour they are not doing a good job. Took me better part of the day to get them spotless. Im going to charge 400 takes lots of media to get them perfect.

How messy was it using the walnut shells? Are they eveywhere?

It really wasn’t bad, next engine bay will be taped off fully with plastic. Lets just say the garage is full of them. I got the vacuum in and got most of them out. Had a moment of mis communication with my helper, he turned the air on before the wand was in the valve, whoops! Mine were pretty bad, really hard to get pictures but ill post a couple. Lots of blasting, scraping with a pick to get off weird angles, some carb cleaner, and re blasting. But over all im happy with them

Clean!

i was there and watched them do it, came out perfect and looked like new!

they even did it the cheap way with a cheapo shop vac, but had the correct tool/wand for the intake ports

honestly its a “2” person job without the right equipment, but no way should take you the better part of a day

Im sure in time it will take less and less. Today was filled with many issues, dialing in equipment etc. I bought and am using all the BMW tools also, very expensive shop vac and a shop worthy 80 gallon compressor. Just lots of trial and error today. But to get it done in an hour i just don’t see it being possible.

Is it running any better?

ya an hour is probably a bit of an understatement, although i was out of the shop in less than 2 hours

Its kind of unbelievable but idle is soooo much smoother now and car feels more responsive. I am very happy

Mine was too after I did the cleaning. You don’t realize it’s bad, till you see how much better it can be.
