New car advice...

In before “title is going in fathers name for insurance purposes. Daddy is fronting the money, I’ll ‘pay’ him back.”

Seriously though, ‘fun and safe; on the sportier side’ in the same sentance? Take the cash and buy a used car straight down. That Audi at 9 grand in our forums would be prime as hell for a 17 year old. Plus, at 4 doors, it’ll be better when you go off to college.

hell yeah

not having a car payment >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> a car payment.

cars are terrible investments.

im guessing the car loan will be thru his parents, along with the insurance which im guessing his parents are paying since it doesnt seem to be a problem. also, are u making 2000 a month just during summer because i doubt you are making that during the school year. unless you dropped out and you life will probably lead to an epic fail ecspecially with a car payment.

imo, i wouldnt put the 10k down, i would open an account where the money is transferred each month for your payment. that money would last you 2-3 years of payments, which by then you can decided whether or not you actually want to keep the car. and you should have enough to pay it off, or sell it for what you have left on the loan+some.

  • i like the Lexus IS300, if i had the cash i would buy one for myself: rwd, sporty

edit: Also those finance numbers basically are barely even given out, your parents will probably not qualify. Its called a sales pitch, you go in thinking youll get 0% but you end up paying 7-11%

and for every 1000$ you put down it lowers the car payments about 20per month fyi

terrible in the winter…

Subaru is the only logical choice, unless he just doesn’t wanna drive in the winter

yeah i just read he wanted a winter car lol, but he has an audi now… i dont get what he is doing…

i also have 10k to put down and im in a similar financial situation, but spending that much money on a car at this time in my life is just not practical. you dont know what your financial situation will be a year from now or even a few months from now. Which is why i own a used car, and fixed everything wrong with it and take care of it.

seriously buy a sub 5k car and enjoy it, then when your 21 minimum (take a saftey course and also have your license for 3 years to save on insurance)
then buy a new car, by then you should know what you want.

you came to the wrong place for choosing a new car…this forum isnt about helping anyone with a simple problem or to answer a simple question…its about bagging on someone for doing something that the other person doesnt agree with…if you have the money/job security/“help from someone else”, then buy a new car…dont listen to anyone on here for “what your best option is” because its gonna go in 325235325 different directions and your gonna be more confused than you were when you first asked the question…

we live in buffalo, sensible choice would be: AWD…therefore, subaru

look into consumer reports magazine…they have every single new car out now, the prices, the reliability and the “problems” that come with the cars…

BS. If he can’t drive in the winter a RWD car, then he shouldn’t have a license.

Fucken BS myth its harder to drive a RWD car in the winter. Only drivers with their head up their asses can’t drive RWD in the winter.

See CKY’s threads for inspiration on why NOT to buy a 20k car at age 17.

CKY’s payments are likely double what this kid is looking at, and he is buying for a completely different reason.

It’s not about affording it, I’m sure this dude can afford it. It’s the idea that noone at 17 needs to buy a 20k car. Getting yourself in a un-needed car payment is horrible at that age.

Also, not too mention if you are asking what kind of car to buy on a forum cannot make that decision on your own…

imo its easier to drive rwd than fwd in the winter, its just that rwd are typically lower to the ground than fwd cars and therefore suck

Wow this went way off topic and fast. I think they’re all decent cars. Go with the one you’re most comfortable with in the test drive. I have an evo so I’d go with the Mitsu, but don’t put money down. Put maybe $2000 down max and work with the dealer on the monthly payment. You’d be surprised at what you can get once you work out the numbers (meaning how much money it would cost you if you put 10k or if you put 2k down and worked on lowering the monthly payments) I’d rather see you pay $300/mo with 2k down than 200/mo with 10k down.

Also, if you’re interested in the Lancer - talk to Steve Mrozek at Ray Laks Mistubishi. He’s straight forward and very helpful. I did not feel pressured into buying at any point during my car buying experience which was over 10 days of talking with him about numbers, rates, etc.

Good luck.

The 17 and payments has been beaten like a wife.

On that note, drive them some more see which you like more.

I dont know why you guys keep telling this kid to buy this new car or that new car. He is not of legal age. He isnt buying shit himself as he cannot get financed. Everything would have to be under someone elses name. You cannot cosign for someone under 18. Maybe we should get his mom to sign up and have a discussion with her about what she should buy for him? If there indeed is someone else involved who can put this under their name I prefer out of state grandparents. When you get tired of the car in a year you can stick them with the car/bill.
As far as affordability… 2k/month and “no bills” doesnt mean shit. You are talking about at least a 5 year loan here. What happens if this kid loses his job? Decides to move out on his own in a year and has to pay rent/bills? Turns 18 knocks up his high school sweetheart and is forced to pay child support? Gets a couple tickets and his insurance goes through the roof? 2k is nothing in the real world. Especially when you are 17 and know little to nothing about responsibility financial or otherwise.
The OP is fortunate enough to somehow have 10k burning a hole in his pocket. Lucky sperm parents are loaded savings inheritance who knows. I am not going to say buy a car for 2k and put the rest away even though thats prolly the smartest thing to do. I know at 17 i wouldnt have been able to do that. 10k can buy you a lot of car these days. Buy a used car. Teens shouldn’t have to worry about making car payments/insurance etc.
My 2c.

^ guy sounds like my dad.

True Question:

Mommy and daddy are paying for 1/2 a car for me and covering my insurance what car can i afford to get?

For the money I would get a TDI, unless you don’t have to pay for gas either, then in that case I’d get a Scuby.

again why you dont ask for help with a car buying decision on here…the random shit everyone wants to put in…

he didnt ask for anyone to give him a life lesson about buying a new car/bills/moving out/blah blah blah…all he wanted to know was which car should he buy thats brand new/warranty/reliable…

he isnt your kid so why do you care if one day he isnt able to afford the car? its his co-signers credit, not yours…if he defaults on the payments its not gonna ruin your life or your well-being so who gives a fuck :gotme:

these fucking discussions get so twisted and moronic its actually sad…it was a simple question, which of the new(er) cars available would suit his needs and be reliable…thats all…i will agree that dropping 10K down on a car is dumb unless your a baller and make 10K in a month…i would say put 5K down MAX and keep the other 5K for a “shit happens” fund…

IRONY

his mom and dad are prob taking care of the whole thing regardless…
