First Look: 2015 BMW M3 / M4

The BMW M performance brand is going back to its roots, while signaling clear change for the future. The 2015 BMW M3 sedan and 2015 BMW M4 coupe were revealed today, with both vehicles shedding some serious pounds, offering up more power courtesy of a twin-turbo I-6, and promising a continued focus on motorsports, thanks to extensive development time at the Nürburgring.

Though the sedan and coupe variants of the M3 now have more in common than ever before, they’re being marketed and sold as two separate nameplates. The sedan lives on as the 2015 BMW M3, while the coupe is split-off and will be sold as the 2015 BMW M4. Not only do the cars no longer share a name, they no longer share a production line either.

What the M3 and M4 do share is what’s important though. Powering the 2015 M3 and M4 is a 3.0-liter twin-turbo I-6 making 425 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque – 11 horsepower more and 111 lb-ft of torque more than the old 4.0-liter V-8-powered M3. Those bemoaning the loss of the high-revving, naturally aspirated V-8 shouldn’t miss too much, because the new I-6 will spin to 7600 rpm – that’s stratospherically high for a turbocharged mill. BMW says peak power is made from 1850-5500 rpm.

Two transmissions will be available in the 2015 BMW M4 and 2015 BMW M3: a six-speed manual capable of rev-matched downshifts, and a seven-speed twin-clutch automatic. With the manual transmission, BMW says 0-60 mph will come in 4.1 seconds with the coupe or sedan, while the dual-clutch will need just 3.9 seconds to accelerate from 0-60 mph, thanks to standard launch control. The previous dual-clutch-equipped M3 accelerated from 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds in our testing. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph. With both transmissions lighter and more compact than before, BMW is promising big fuel economy gains.

Handling is equally important as speed in a BMW M3 (and M4), and BMW seems to deliver there too. The suspension of the 2015 M3 and M4 is almost entirely made of aluminum and forged aluminum, making the car both lightweight and stiff. Each M3 and M4 is shod with performance rubber mounted on forged 18x9 wheels up front and 18x10 wheels in back. The options sheet will include 19-inch wheels. An electronically locking rear diff is standard. A neat new feature on models equipped with the dual-clutch gearbox is what BMW calls Stability Clutch Control. Stability Clutch Control will open up the M3 or M4’s clutch when the car is under-steering, transferring weight to bring the car back in line.

BMW’s investment in carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRP) for the humdrum i3 seems to be paying off with performance gains. BMW claims the new M4 weighs in hundreds of pounds lighter than the old M3 Coupe. BMW used CFRP in the roof of both the M4 and the M3 (a sedan first), and shows it off by leaving it unfinished on both cars. BMW claims the CFRP roof sheds 11 pounds from the M3’s curb weight, and more than 13 pounds from the M4’s, while significantly lowering the center of gravity. CFRP was also used for the single-piece prop shaft, and under the hood for the strut braces. The M4 makes further use of CFRP in its trunk. The M3 and M4’s front fenders and power dome hood were made from aluminum.

Visually, the 2015 BMW M3 and M4 look identical until you get to their rear ends. Up front, both the M3 and M4 have a menacing presence, courtesy of their purposeful front ends, complete with BMW’s Air Curtains, M gills, and Air Breathers – which are just fancy names for aerodynamic and cooling aids. Both the M3 and M4 also share their aerodynamically optimized twin-stalk rear-view mirrors. The M3 and M4 share most all of their profile features, except for their roof profiles. In back, the M4 looks both lower and wider than the M3, and sports different taillights. The M3 and M4 also both have different spoilers. The 2015 BMW M3 features a lip spoiler, while the M4 gets an integrated spoiler made from CFRP.

Those familiar with the interior of the BMW 3 Series and 4 Series will feel immediately at home in the 2015 M3 and M4. Each car comes standard with M sport seats, and sporty rear seats made of lightweight materials. An M Sport steering wheel is also standard, and is fitted with paddle shifters if the optional dual-clutch transmission is selected.

Though the 2015 BMW M3 and 2015 BMW M4 will come well-equipped, a vast array of options are available. Among the more interesting options are an M-specific head-up display, adaptive LED headlights, and the integration of the BMW M Laptimer – a smartphone app that plugs into the car and will allow the driver to download data like accelerator position, steering angle, and lateral acceleration while on the track. BMW’s full array of safety tech will also be available on the 2015 M3 and M4.

The 2015 BMW M3 and 2015 BMW M4 will be officially revealed in January at the 2014 Detroit auto show, and will go on sale in the summer of 2014. Pricing will be announced closer to launch, but expect the M3 to start around $65,000, and the M4 to start closer to $70,000.

2015 BMW M3 Sedan / M4 Coupe: Worth the Wait
Everything M cars should be—you know, apart from the turbos.

The wait is finally over—and not a moment too soon. BMW ceased production of the E90 and E92 M3 coupe and sedan what seems like ages ago, and after teasing us with an M4 concept and a thorough crash course delivered via a rousing ride-along, we now have final specifications of the 2015 M3 sedan and M4 coupe. (Never mind that we’re still some six months away from the first models arriving on U.S. soil.)

The new-generation M cars—which get their own chassis codes for the first time, F80 for the M3 and F82 for the M4—shed their predecessors’ naturally aspirated 4.0-liter V-8 in favor of a quintessentially BMW straight-six. BMW has affixed the “TwinPower” moniker to the all-new, M-developed engine; the badging is applied to BMW’s gas and diesel turbocharged engines, and can refer to single, twin, or triple turbos, single or multiple dual-scroll turbos, or a turbo with variable inlet geometry. The M3 and M4 are fitted with a pair of Mitsubishi-sourced turbochargers.

The M3 and M4’s 3.0-liter unit, code-named S55, can rev up to 7600 rpm—a remarkable achievement for a turbocharged mill. The twin-turbo six-cylinder is rated at 425 horsepower from 5500 to 7300 rpm, while torque tops out at 406 lb-ft from 1800 rpm. Those are increases of 11 horses and 111 lb-ft of twist versus the V-8–powered M3. The standard transmission is a six-speed manual, which automatically revs on downshifts. The optional transmission is a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, which delivers quicker shifts in exchange for additional weight.

BMW says that the 0-to-60-mph sprint takes 4.1 seconds with the six-speed manual, and the dual-clutch drops that number to 3.9. (For reference, the last M3 we tested came equipped with a stick and we managed a 0–60 time of 4.3 seconds.) Top speed is governed at 155 mph, but we believe that there will be an option to raise that limiter to 174 mph. Despite the impressive gains in output and claimed performance, the Bavarian automaker says that the M3 and the M4 will be 25 percent more efficient than the models they replace.

The loss of two cylinders certainly aids the quest for improved efficiency, but a strict diet played a role, too. BMW says that it cut 175 pounds from the E90 models—the 2015s are said to weigh exactly as much as an E46 M3. No curb weights were provided, but we expect the M4 to weigh in at 3400 pounds—152 pounds lighter than the last M3 coupe we weighed. The Bavarians’ claim that the new engine is just 20 pounds lighter than the V-8, so the remaining 155 pounds of savings comes from structural changes, lightweight seats, and a liberal use of carbon fiber—including for both models’ roof panels.

Befitting the unique chassis codes, M GmbH also has significantly reworked the M pair’s underpinnings versus the 335i and 435i. The control arms are lighter and stiffer, the rear subframe is bolted directly to the body without any use of rubber elements, and a carbon-fiber strut brace winds its way through the engine bay. The new cars come with an electronically controlled rear differential called Active M Differential, borrowed from the M5 and the M6. Eighteen- and 19-inch wheels will be offered, and they’ll be be wrapped in 255/35 rubber up front and 275/35 in the rear. The M3 and M4 use an entirely new electric steering system that offers the requisite driver-selectable modes of Comfort, Sport, and Sport Plus. Carbon-ceramic brakes, the same as those found on the M5 and M6, and an adaptive suspension are available as options.

The M3 and M4 look every bit as aggressive as their spec sheets indicate they will be. Both models have a wider track than the base 3- and 4-series, the front ends are dominated by massive intakes, and the traditional power-dome is as muscular as ever.

BMW isn’t talking pricing just yet, and likely won’t until much closer to the car’s stateside launch next spring. But so long as that number doesn’t rise too much from the outgoing car’s $62,000 sticker—and we don’t expect it to—then the extended interval between 3-series–based M cars will be very much worth the wait.

I really want to see what the aftermarket can do for this car reliably… lots of speculation about what kind of gains you can make right from the dealership and stay in warranty.

also want to see how the front lip / splitters turn out on it.

also, the colours and packages for the first year are meh. no red exterior colour, just Saphir Orange.

definitely want the competition pack next time too and wait for the LCI update which is supposed to be the 2016 model year.

Ditto. The entire F80 M3 4-door package looks great, but I do miss the sculpted smooth lines of the E92 M3.

But I dislike the sound of the new M3 exhuast; albeit an inline six twin turbo, but it just doesnt sound that mean. I’m sure when someone opens it up with a high flow unit it will sound better.

Probably won’t sound better with a high flow. Take a cue from the 335/135’s, they sound fucking AWFUL with open exhausts. BMW’s straight 6’s haven’t sounded good since S38/S50 days. Though the argument for certain S54’s could be made.

F80 BMW M3 spotted in Mineral White

After the F82 BMW M4 spotted yesterday, its twin brother the F80 M3 makes an appearance as well. A prototype painted in the Mineral White color and red leather interior was spotted on German roads.

The clear shots showcase one of the most aggressive-looking BMWs on the roads, and compared to the M4, the F80 M3 seems to stand out even more with its rear fenders and well-balanced design.

On the outgoing models, the CFRP roof was confined to the Coupe version. Now, for the first time, the four-door BMW M3 will get this striking design and functional feature as well. The CFRP roof brings weight savings of five kilograms in the case of the BMW M3 Sedan and more than six kilograms in the case of the BMW M4 Coupe. It also lowers the vehicle’s center of gravity, which has a positive impact on driving dynamics.

Made from aluminum rather than conventional steel, the front side walls and the bonnet (with power dome) make an important contribution to the models’ lightweight design concept, while at the same time improving axle load distribution.

Under the hood, the new engine of the M3 sees a slight power upgrade over the previous V8 to 431 hp, which is delivered between 5,390 and 7,000 rpm. Peak torque has been increased by roughly 40 per cent to 406 lb-ft (550 Newton metres), and is maintained over a very wide rev band (1,800–5,390 rpm). The standard sprint from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) takes the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupe 4.1 seconds respectively. Top speed is 155 mph (electronically limited), or 174 mph if the optional M Driver’s Package is specified. The new powerplant also boasts excellent fuel economy: the BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe achieve consumption in the EU cycle of 8.3 l/100 km (34 mpg) and CO2 emissions of 194 g/km, an improvement of more than 25 per cent over the previous model’s figures. Regulated pollutant emissions are EU6-compliant.

I didn’t catch it but do these use electric steering? The torque is awesome but the sound and non-screaming redline make it less appealing. Probably won’t be as reliable as the old v8 either, although definitely more efficient.

I thought the N55 platform fixed most of the N54 issues so I would assume this will be ok.
