If I was on street tires I don’t know if I could go WOT, but on the V710’s it’s definitely doable.
Not lifting is faster than lifting. Your car may feel more settled in the rear end if you lift, which may make you feel better… but it’s simple speed management. Not letting off the throttle will always be faster than letting off the throttle - you just have to figure out if your car, with your setup, can do it all the way around the turn. Mine can, and I come out of the turn at around 87-88mph going WOT versus about 79-80mph when I’m not.
The turn before a straight is very critical. Less entrance speed into a straight will mean less exit speed by almost exponential amounts. If you think you will “make up” the time/speed lost on grand curve during the front straight, you’re wrong.
I can do it pretty consistently in my car now, and it’s awesome. Funny thing is, in the graph I posted (mph vs. distance) you can see that I didn’t do it there. I set up well, but my line was slightly funky, and I had to adjust with the throttle.
yeah i always let off in grand curve… but then again the last event at TMP (CSCS) was the only time i had my new wheels, tires and an alignment this year so that should make a difference.
i tried going WOT through curve grande once and it didnt work to well i felt the rear start to come around and almost ended up in the grass. i give a quick lift in the middle of the turn and i am fine, plus it help out in keeping me from hitting me rev limiter earlier in the turn cause i hit it coming out of it sometimes
… or just swallowed some pride/ego and learned more about how to drive your car instead of arguing on the internet about why it can’t be done?
Remember, I did have twin turbos on the car at one point Bing. Guess what - went WOT then too… On Michelin PS2s also, not slicks.
It’s all about choosing a LINE that allows you to do it. The cones are dead wrong for most RWD cars to do so but its not autox, you don’t just drive cone-to-cone :meh: Balancing the car’s desire to push toward the outside / drive off the track with the steering inputs is also key - maybe you just have your spring rates / shocks / swaybars setup with too much oversteer (if you want to blame equipment not driver)?
I might just have to adjust my line a little bit to get a little better exit speed. I’m coming out (where the pointer cone on the left hand side is) I’m at about 78-80, then hitting about 107 in the straight (Indicated). 75 - 76 and 102 real speeds, respectively.
With the line I’m taking now I have to lift slightly to dive the front end in. I really have to get the drift box working so I can see how much I’m actually slipping or at least what my lateral G is doing around there.
I think if i come out a little farther and make a better straightline exit through the turn i can probably pick up 2mph more.
Dave, do you have any idea what your lap times should be at? Just kind of curiousity on my part
I do like this idea alot. But the sensor doesn’t have to be on the center straight… just in between the pit lanes, then one could essentially do a whole lap for warm up
I’m curious too. I’d say easily within Cassie’s and probably .75-1.5 faster. She actually has better tires, but I have more width. Her car is lighter, but I have more power. I know there are a few places she’s faster and a few that I’m pushing more, so I think it would call come down to driver/day but I’d guess mid-low 1:16s would be pretty obtainable / repeatable in the Z
hmm… I’m hoping to be in the 1:17s my next day out. 1:17.9 would be a nice feeling. I really don’t have a clue what my car is capable with its current set up of
Stock suspension and 245/40ZR-18 Sumitomo HTR Z II, fronts and 275/35ZR-18 Sumitomo HTR Z II, soo junk tires lol
I believe a little better exit speed out of Curve Grande, and Carousel could net me a second… They seem to be my biggest problems right now
my tires are no where near what Dave and Cassie are running though… i am just hoping that my extra 75-125 whp will make up 2-3 seconds…
i also have to pull my fenders a bit to cure the rubbing issues before i can REALLY hammer on it too. but still, talking smack is fuuuuuunn.
like dave said though, i need to get more seat time. And the fact that the car is getting faster faster than i am becoming a better driver complicates things too.
yeah Dave, that is Sasha… he does a fair bit of work on my car, we’re pretty close i guess in that i talk to him every day. We’re at the level where we hate each other and get over it immediately afterwards.
Oh yeah, extra horsepower will definitely make you quicker, but it wont make you a better driver… and in fact, could make you WORSE because it can compensate and cover up a LOT of stuff… ie, why Dave dropped the turbos.
Ultimately, I don’t give a crap about who is faster than who. What was important to me when we did the time attack was that with my experience and my setup, I knew I should be faster than the people there (that was the only sort of “comparison” I could make to other people). The fact that I was able to beat my personal best time by 0.6 seconds during the time attack was just fucking icing on the cake (and I don’t think a few people out there believed me when I said I had ran a 1:17.8 earlier in the day, so I was able to man up and put down a time on the record that shows I wasn’t just making that up).
What’s important is to have some idea of what times your car COULD be running, if you were doing things right. I have an idea because Mike took my car out and ran a 1:15.99. So I know pure driver improvement can get me there (again, my fastest time was a 1:17.2). Each time I go out I get a little better here and a little better there, and eventually I’ll get to his times, and hopefully surpass them by a bit due to experience in the car.
I’m a good driver (I think many people can attest to that) but there’s no way my best time will ever be faster than Dave’s best time purely because of the cars. But that’s cool by me because I know I’m getting the best out of what I’ve got - and I know if I had a little time behind the wheel of his car, I might get decently comparable times.
