Front page of the NYT today has an article about people smuggling guns from the US into MEX. There are a number of good arguments for and against changing our laws to try to remedy this. What do you think? Is the fact that Mexican criminals are using guns obtained in the US to commit crime in Mexico enough to change our domestic policies? Should we change our laws/limit our freedoms in reaction to a “Mexican” problem?
I think we change our drug laws and take away the cartel’s market, let them wither on the vine with their money supply cut off.
I hope to someday see this become politically viable. I feel it is a popular sentiment and has a strong intellectual backing, just our politicians are too cowardly to even attempt a serious reform along this line of thought. The Economist has written a few very persuasive features on this topic.
it’s just a manner of swaying the ignorant masses because the guy running against any candidate proposing to do so would be inundated with ads “Mr. XXX Supports DRUG DEALERS! He wants everyone to smoke crack!” blah blah blah, when he’d actually be doing the contrary.
I really believe the heart and minds of the people would be in favor of this. The problem comes in with peoples pretensions and insecurities on the subject. “I’m for legalizing marijuana, just don’t let my neighbor know”, mentality. Even though their neighbor thinks the same way. The argument also has to be explained properly and stripped of the politics and rhetoric that inundates our current conversation regarding the war on drugs. The Economist article I posted really does a good job of this.
Federal agents say about 90 percent of the 12,000 pistols and rifles the Mexican authorities recovered from drug dealers last year and asked to be traced came from dealers in the United States, most of them in Texas and Arizona.
Pretty sure the ATF confirmed it was 17%, not 90%.
I wholeheartedly agree. But 40% of this country thinks Obama is a Muslim and Saddam caused 9/11 and the Economist is for elitists in Massachussets.

Obama’s looking for ways to pour money into the economy by putting people to work. Between building a big wall topped with razor wire and motion detectors and hiring enough border patrol to patrol the wall I think that would put lots of people to work.
Call me crazy though. We sure don’t want to secure our border and put people to work.
that’s actually a hell of an idea. I hope there’s some projects in the stimulus to do so.
The only reason that article was in the NYT is because Hillary was apologizing to Mexico last week for the US supplying them with assault rifles. It is all apart of us apologizing to the world for everything.
A little humility goes a long way. Or are you one of those guys that thinks the US can do not wrong and therefor recognizing mistakes shows weakness?
How about we work out a trade with Mexico?
They take back all their Mexicans, we’ll take back all our guns. Then we’ll put up the wall I described earlier.
Once that’s done we’ll banish StrokedZ to stand on the wall and apologize for what ever he wants for the next 4 years.
