Yeah, there is no way this guy is coming into the NHL right away. Some don’t even think Leggio is ready to be NHL caliber. Honestly, I think the Sabres want to keep Ryan Miller. There is no viable option right now to replace him.
Rumor is that Minnesota gave up those 2 prospects and their 1st and 2nd for Pommer. If it is true, that is one hell of a deal for us.

Hearing that Stafford got traded to Washington as well. Not sure who/what we got in return.
As far as trade deadline days go, today was pretty f-ing lame. I was hoping the Sabres would make a couple more moves but it is what it is. Being a fan of this team is pretty hard right now and I think Darcy’s time here is up. His press conference this afternoon was deflating and he pretty much admitted he was out of answers and that winner go after players at the deadline. All he did was sell, and not nearly enough.
I think that Darcy is done here. At the end of the season, he will be fired. These picks are just setting up the next GM to come in and have a fresh start.
Leggio has been playing solid but is he NHL ready yet? Furthermore is he starting goalie capable? That’s still debatable I suppose. You have to remember also that he turns 29 this summer. That’s not saying he doesn’t have any shot at it but I think Buffalo wants to bring someone up younger, hence the acquisition of Hackett.
I have to say though now that the draft picks were tossed into the Pominville deal, I’m pretty happy about that. Sure we could have made more moves, but let’s face it we need make the most of this summer. Rushing around at the last minute trying to pull off crazy deals probably wouldn’t have been the best idea. I still hope Regier gets canned though…
Listening to Ted Black this morning on WGR, it sounds like they really are still stuck on Regier and how good he is. His excuse was that he doesn’t think Regier was given the opportunity to get things back in return for our players we lost (Drury and Briere I’m assuming)
What really puzzles me is that they say the goal is to get all these young prospects and young talent in the draft, but look at what happened with Grigorenko. They brought him in, wasted his opportunity and then shipped him back like it was his fault that he didn’t do well. They gave him 5 minutes of ice time per game. Is that how we are going to treat all our prospects?
I guess what I am getting at is, won’t we be in the same spot with these draft guys coming up? Wasn’t he our 1st round draft pick for this year and he still isn’t NHL ready?
Good question I think. Might depend on our coach…If Patrick Roy comes up, he might be able to manage the younger kids better. We’ve already got some skilled guys with Porter, Foligno and Flynn. Pysyk looks to be a solid defensemen and Myers can be if he ever gets his head straight.
I still think that Darcy gets canned after this season. I think they obviously won’t come out and say it, but they have set up well for a new GM to come in and make the necessary changes with all these draft picks.
These picks we get probably won’t be playing next season unless they’re amazing, and to be honest I don’t keep good enough tabs on the prospects to see who is coming up and if we have a shot of getting someone NHL ready.
Rebuilding typically takes years. If they plan on doing it with draft picks don’t expect a more competitive team for a few seasons. With that said, I’m hoping some of these moves were to clear cap space to sign someone that doesn’t suck. With the new CBA rules some teams will have to clear room so there should be some decent players available this off season.
Tuesday’s game should go to show us this team can play well though. Pittsburgh wasn’t playing their best but we still played like we knew what we were doing, minus a few other games that’s been hard to say this year.
Im of the mind set that Darcy can trade and negotiate like nobodys business, but can not evaluate young talent for the life of him. Youd be stupid to think he hasnt made some really great trades in the past few seasons, however he has not brought up many players through the system despite all the drafts from the past 12 years. I mean look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Buffalo_Sabres_draft_picks#Draft_picks that and tell me how many of his first and second round picks ever developed into anything? Sure hes had some bright spots in his later rounds but even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in awhile. I guess you could counter that with poor player development in the minors but there are some pretty sizeable busts in those early rounds.
That said, let him stockpile picks all he wants, but what will come of them?
Or he could package the picks and or a player to move up in the draft, etc etc.
I doubt Pegula fires him after the season. I’m certain he’s got at least through the end of next season at this point.
If they can move up into the top 5 or so, they should be able to draft an NHL ready player. There’s a reason Grigs dropped to 12. He was an elite talent, but not quite NHL ready(as we’ve all seen). He on;y got 5 minutes of time because lindy was trying to win, and save his job. I don’t put that on darcy necessarily.
If they move Vanek and/or miller (which seems likely after their comments today) plan on them sucking for at least 2 more years while they develop the next round of players, and sprinkle in a few trades and FA’s.
I think Darcy is fine as a talent evaluator, it’s building a team that he doesn’t seem to be all that great at. All that said, I’d be fine if they canned him tomorrow.
