Official Android thread

^Good call…unsyncing my Twatter right now.

Well I’ll be damned. They’ve got a full bootloader unlock over at XDA for the Verizon Galaxy S3.

Here’s the breaking story, but there’s a flurry of development going on. The article says you need OSX or Linux, but there’s already windows methods in the forums. Actually looks like several methods. I haven’t sifted through it all. I’ll probably give it a week for the dust to settle before I unlock mine.

It starts… Lol

Wow. Apparently it wasn’t hacked or cracked or whatever you want to call it. It was leaked from Samsung.

Funny because with the kexec workaround it’s not particularly needed, but should get the phone a bunch more attention from the dev community.

motorolas phone support is fucking AWFUL. may you never know this pain.

Are you still fighting with your RAZR? Are you trying to get tech support or are you trying to make a warranty claim?

arent you leaving verizon? ditch the phone

Motorola has had my phone for 10 days, but has no status updates, and no idea where it is or when I will get it.

^ WTF. Want an OG Droid? It can run jellybean

I had no issue with Motorola. Phone had a speaker problem, 2 day turn around and sent back next day.

Ok, so I went all the way back to March 2012 of this thread and didn’t learn about a single cool app or widget to install on my new S3.

iPhone thread > android thread. All that’s in here is the same people who talk about how great android is in every other thread trying to fix each other’s android issues.

What cool shit should I do to this AT&T Galaxy S3 I got? Already replaced the stock browser with Chrome, stock messaging app with Handcent, stock email client with Gmail app and stock weather widget with Weatherbug.

Parcels was the closest replacement package tracking software to Delivery Status Touch I could find (though it’s no where near as good since it won’t autodetect tracking numbers from your clipboard).
2X Client is the best RDP I’ve found so far, but it sucks compared to Jaadu RDP.
Slacker Radio widget is pretty cool.
I think the S-Voice chick has downs syndrome (“What was the score of the Indianapolis Colts Game?” - S-voice: “I CAN COUNT TO POTATO!”)

I didn’t do much to my Maxx on ICS. Gmail app, weather by accuweather.com 1x4 widget, pandora 1x4 widget, 2x3 task widget, lotus notes 2x3 widget, power manager 1x4 widget, bunch of other little things. I liked the one ICS loader before I went full ICS actually. ICS is just better on the battery. Went camping, and with very mild usage went over 3 days and didn’t turn anything off.

Regret

It’s ok the best apps on my Nexus 7 are the kindle app and G+

What are you hoping it will do? Cure cancer?

Playing with different launchers is fun. Search play store for launcher and you’ll get lots of hits. Basically will let you get creative with your home screen setup and erase a lot of the touchwiz BS.

Foxfi for free mobile hotspot
Tapatalk for forums
Wifi protect and webroot for security paranoia.
Craigslist by yyh creative is a good app for Craigslist

I’ll do a once over on my device for other cool apps

I love having Google talk and navigation. The navigation ROCKS. Talk is convenient and I highly prefer apps that are made by the content provider.

I like the google news and weather widget. Scrolls headlines and a quick tap brings up the app with configurable headline topics.

Fuck s-voice. Google voice search works plently well. For navigation you can just hit the voice search and say “navigate to chick-fil-a”, “navigate to 123 baker lane buffalo NY”, etc… boom you get turn by turn nav. Works nearly flaws less for me. It understands my voice really well and auto corrects when needed. Really impressive.

I’m on VZW with an old true unlimited data plan, Foxfi will allow me to do a FREE mobile hotspot?

Yessir

The legality of whether or not it’s allowed and whether or not vzw can nail you for it i don’t know. I don’t abuse it, but I use it when necessary.

Same here, it is a lifesaver for me since I am forced to use a Mobile Hotspot as my home internet and that has a data limit each month. FoxFi through my phone gets me a couple hundred MB as the end of the month if I really need it. I will ditch the hotspot once I have a 4G LTE phone altogether and save the $50/month.

I thought Verizon had to let people do whatever now with data because of the FCC ruling.
