DLP is cool. I am working on rolling out a solution as we speak. It’s not gonna help if the disk is accessed by being pulled out and mounted elsewhere (and/or decrypted if needed). Strong encryption is the only thing that will save you here. Citrix is very helpful, as it allows us to protect a central point of attack rather than a clusterfuck of laptops and workstations.
Sometimes email is the only course of communication available and it is difficult to NOT use it even for sensitive stuff. However, you can put mitigations in place to help bring your risk down on it. DLP and Encryption engines like PGP can enable orgs to safely use email.
There aren’t a whole lot of miscreants that have the ability, time and resources to crack a strong form of encryption with a decent passphrase.
If you need to transfer sensitive files via email inside the company or even a 3rd party Accellion makes a securetransfer product other companies have similar ones.
In our case if a normal laptop is sensitive information gets out, we pay for credit monitoring for 2 years for all students… Regardless if it’s lost or stolen
You know, I have not seen that before. Thanks for pointing it out.
File transfers aren’t the only thing to be concerned about, but yeah, a product like this would be a great add-on.
We are working on a contract for a cloud product right now that will also help us with this problem…
Email will also be a source of data loss, though. At small companies it’s easy to educate and get people to stop doing it, but large organizations struggle with stopping users from doing it. That is where DLP comes in.

I heard about a breach the other day in passing. Apparently a BP employee had data for all of the loss claims from the Gulf Oil Spill fiasco on his laptop. Contact info, bank account info for claim payment, the whole nine yards. Lost the laptop, no whole disk encrpytion…whammy
Not sure if it has been mentioned but i recently started using “whats app” it allows users with i phones and droid to be together in a group chat, i have been using it for 2 weeks now and havent found any flaws, i suggest you give it a try!
I use group me for a group chat. You can access it on the web also and send/receive messages through their website. Also has some nice features like “sleep” mode which will silence the group. Works through the app, through their site, or through regular SMS.

Anyone get the new SwiftKey Flow Beta? If you need it let me know. Works pretty well. Remember to move your finger over the spacebar for whole sentences.
