It is 2.2 to 2.3 … that IS a minor release
Most of the gingerbread UI changes were specific to the stock experience. Having Sense run on top of it completely negates those changes. People running stock android have seen some significant UI changes.

It’s Froyo to Gingerbread…whole OS change.
Froyo = 2.2
Gingerbread = 2.3
As a general rule of thumb in software development, changes after the first version number are minor releases. Version 2.3 (gingerbread) to version 3.0 (honeycomb) would be considered a major release.
Also, as stated, the changes were somewhat significant but Sense UI completely hides them.
Right I’ve seen the Gingerbread actually change the UI on other phones. Sucks that HTC overshadows that. I also understand that usually versions go VERSION.UPDATE.PATCH etc. In this case 2.2 -> 2.3 is a bit more than a minor update, considering the naming scheme, and supposed changes. 3.0 is strictly for Tablets so the next full version would have to be 3.1 (Ice Cream Sandwich)
Moar BIONIC!!!
I have an e-boner for that phone…I wantz it. I’m still not familiar with the OMAP processor
3.1 was already released as honeycomb update, ice cream sandwich will be 2.4. what google considers a minor update ie going from 2.2 to 2.3 can be a bit confusing because some releases have more than others like what 2.2 did with flash. i consider that a pretty significant update but its still only minor according to google
Im still not hooked on the Bionic i am liking the galaxy s 2 more
I’m loving the fact that the Galaxy S II is already in the hands of the Cyanogenmod folks
Is anyone else waiting for VZW to release their version of the Samsung Galaxy S II phone? I’m really looking forward to checking it out.
Reading reviews of the original Galaxy S on VZW, people were upset at it’s horribly altered software and lack of any type of Froyo updating. I wonder if they’ll get all of that worked out with the new version. However, with a lack of something as simple as a notification LED, it seems that the designers may just be trying to sell people on the display rather than what people want/need.
With the missing LED Notification light, I found a great app called noLED on the market which will work perfectly as a replacement. I have been playing with it for a couple of weeks now on my DX and it’s very stable and reliable. I am no longer worried about that lack of LED. (even though I hate the designers for leaving it out)
It also looks to be missing an actual button to take pics, which I just can’t understand why they’d leave that off either. Hopefully that doesn’t deter me from wanting it.
Anyone else looking forward to this phone? Thoughts?
Meh. The Galaxy II just looks like any other android slab to me at this point. Granted it’s a blazing fast slab, but still the same basic experience as any other Android tablet of the last 12 months.
I like playing with new toys, exploring new features and whatnot. If I were to upgrade this year I’d probably wait for a Pre3 or some flavor of WP7.
Fry, I think you’re just obsessed with change.
Samsung has slacked in the past on upgrades, but it seems that is changing. The nexus s was a Samsung device, the first on froyo obviously. The 10.1 tablet is the first on 3.1 and easily the best tablet on the market with android. Also, the upgrade path is completely moot it you’re running custom roms anyway. I havent been on stock software in a long time. So the fact that CM7 will be released on this is a huge plus.
Word. Someone bring something new to market!
This. I’ve seen a few samsung devices not work well with updates. My brother-in-laws Captivate would not download the latest update to 2.2 and he had to do it manually. My Epic still doesn’t have 2.3 (not really a big deal or issue), had a coworkers capitvate drop calls all the time even in good covered areas. I really haven’t been overly impressed with the Samsungs other than the tablets and the gorgeous screens they usually have. I wouldn’t go with either the Pre3 or and WP7, since they are both just playing catch up now. WP7 keeps releasing these updates for their phones with shit the iOS and Android already have. Mango has a few exciting things but mostly stuff we’ve seen before. Plus app support for both these platforms is lacking and for good reason. (See Below)
Anyone got one of these for sale ?
CM7 for the Droid X is coming. Bootloader is still locked but I guess someone found a work around or some other geek speak that I don’t understand.

So since the gingerbread update to my X I have been having a couple of issues.
Sometimes text messages will not be received, phone vibrates like a message came in, but no message and no notification icon
I have BatteryLife widget installed on my main screen, this will not update usage/battery level unless I open the widget
Any suggestions to fix this besides a restore?
Im finally tired of my BB 9630 that IVe been using for the past 2.5 years and want to get on board with an Android phone.
What would everyone recommend? Im in Rochester on Verizon.
Dan
If you’re the type of person to keep a phone for a couple of years and can wait until August the Galaxy S II should be available on VZW and it’s pretty well accepted as the best smartphone on the planet right now.
Otherwise you’re in Rochester so you already have 4G available. Don’t stick yourself with 3G for the next two years while everyone else migrates to 4G. The thunderbolt’s been buggy as shit, so maybe a droid Charge?
Ya, Ill def have whatever I get for at least the full two years.
Im not sure I can wait until august. The ear speaker in my BB is shot. I can only hear it in a totally quiet room with the volume jacked all the way up. I sorta need something asap.
Ya, Ill have to go check out the 4G options. It looks like its the droid Charge, Thunderbolt, or LG Revolution.
EDIT: I hear 4G doesnt acutally work near my house (sicne I live in the Fn sticks). But I spend enough time nearer the city that I can prob take advantage of it still.
Dan
Eh, then again. Battery life sucks ass on all 3 4G phones to the point that 4G should probably be turned off when you aren’t using those speeds, and how often do you really need to be able to stream HD movies? Maybe you’d be better off with 3G but a better phone. Incredible 2 looks nice. The original X is a great phone and The X2 is the same thing but with a better screen and dual core processor…
