*OFFICIAL* Buffalo Sabres 2007 Off-Season Thread

our other big problem is whether or not we’re gonna show up for a game. ditching both captains is a great way to improve that :picard:

souray is a big guy, good in the corners, just lacks that one on one defensive ability…
:fyi: There is no corners in hockey. Its a round rink.
briere is getting paid 10 mil - year one 8 mil 8 mil, 7mil 6mil 3mil 2 mil 2mil… or something like that so it is rather extreme… so i can’t imagine it just being the average,
It’s the average. I’m looking for a link right now.

Good in the corners and one on one ability go hand in hand. He’s good on the PP, I’ll give him that. But he is not worth what he is asking.

connolly will def step up, but we need to get him off the point on the pp. he can work down low and is good at drawing guys away.

FUCK man. get rid of spacek and kalinin. PLEASE. spacek would free up some nice coin, its so fucking ignorant that we still have him (unless the problem is that noone will take him for a decent deal).

we shouldn’t straight rely on miller. if we overwork him every game he’s more prone to getting hurt, then we’re left with conklin.

management needs to get their heads out of their asses

he may not be worth it… but i think the right offer he’ll change his ways.

The salary cap is defined as the amount of real money a team pays out in a single season.

The only way to get rid of Spacek is to find another team who will take over his contract. After Ruff benched him for the majority of the Ottawa series, I doubt any team is going to want him. I’m going to give him 1 more year before I start hating him. I mean, the Sabres are stuck with him for a little bit.

Spacek will be fine, I think being paired with Kalinin hurt him more then anything. Lets get him paired with a quality guy for a full season and see what happens, he has good size and needs to use it more. Kalinine has got to go!!!

When Tallinder wasn’t hurt, Spacek was paired with Campbell and Kalinen was with Teppo. I’m just hoping Spacek wasn’t used to the system and that this year he will turn it around.

I thought spacek only had 1 more year on his contract. is it 2? also, we were pairing him with campbell earlier on and he was doing better, but still not producing like we hired him to

Now, this is only because of a technicality. When the Flyers negotiated that landmark six-year, $37.8-million (all figures U.S.) with Timonen last week, they front-loaded the deal, meaning he will earn considerably more in the early years of the contract and less down the road.
Timonen’s contract carries an annual salary-cap charge of $6.3-million, but his salary for the 2007-08 season — the actual dollars in his pocket — comes in at $8-million. Only New York Rangers winger Jaromir Jagr, operating under terms of the prelockout, rolled-back contract he signed with the Washington Capitals, earns more at $8.3-million.
The Flyers structured the Timonen deal that way, partly as a means of circumventing the NHL salary cap. In terms of dollars paid out to players (as opposed to their salary-cap “value”), the Flyers’ payroll could be well above the expected 2007-08 salary cap of $48-million to $50-million, depending upon how they structure their contracts between now and September.
No, this is not illegal and yes, there is a price to be paid for the strategy in the future.

And technically, if the team could afford it, they could pay Briere 50 million for the first season and then 2 million for the last 7 and STILL have a cap hit of 6.5 million per season.

The sabres key problem last year was the PP, I think they spark that… they can be much much more effective when it matters (the playoffs)

chris your getting way too hung up on his +/- numbers, keep in mind how the rest of that team did last season.

I don’t see a problem with the way Philly worked the numbers. He’s contracted for 8 years, with a no-move clause. Who cares what year he gets how much, as long as it ends up being 52 million. It cuts both ways because at the end of his contract when they’re paying 3 million they’re still being charged 6.5 million in cap.

I still say the cap is a good thing. Unfortunately the cap has gone so high it looks like we’re heading back to pre-cap hockey, where big markets get big players, and small markets get fucked. That’s if you believe the Sabres would be losing money with 50 million a year in player salary. I have my doubts, but since the books will never truely be “open” we’ll never know. I’m sure we’ll see some version of the books showing how the Sabres lose money with 40 million a year in salary.

No, I’m hung up on the price he is asking. He has a rocket of a slapshot, so does Kotalik. I can’t believe you guys would be okay with them paying Souray MORE than what Briere made last season, just because he had 19 PP goals.

the sabres had 71 power play goals last season…

drury and briere combined had 19 goals - 43 points total…
Souray had 19 goals and 48 points on the powerplay himself…

I’m just looking at problems the sabres had… and they need him.

oh yea… this also means souray is the most productive power play player (tied with selanne in terms of points).

If he can spark the sabres PP… then he is worth every cent

im still gonna be excited to see the sabres regardless

they need to do something quick im just getting more and more pissed as time passes and no signings are made

so you don’t give him ANY credit at all for playing defense? all he does is get power play goals? again, your way too hung up on NUMBERS

It’s always such a huge deal when a player leads the nhl in +/- (ie Vanek), but when they have a career record in the negatives, “you’re too hung up on stats, numbers, etc.”, lol.

Yeah, +/- is just a number, but it says something about a player when they’re on the ice MORE OFTEN when an opponent scores on their team, than when their team scores on the opponent.

And do I really need to say this another friggen time? HE’S AN OKAY PLAYER, BUT NOT WORTH 5 MILLION DOLLARS.

edit-Not to mention he had 135 PIM last season. Holy Shit.

Adam Mair had 128. But again that’s just a number. It’s really not a big deal when your 5 million dollar defenseman (who would probably be the highest paid player on the team) is in the penalty box more than your bully tough guy.
