travis are you trying to cut or bulk or just eat healthier
I have been trying to gain weight. I was 6’ -6’1" and 145 lbs since like 8th grade. I’ve finally got to 180 and am starting to get a gut. I need to workout more and tone up. Since my new job I’ve been bringing my lunch to work, which now consists of a Ham or Turkey sandwhich, a small thing of cheese (laughing cow), and a small bag of whole grain wheat thins. For breakfast it’s usually oatmeal or a bagel and OJ. I’m not sure if this is entirely healthy but I’m trying to avoid the fast food joints as much as possible.
well I have been eating at this level of healthy-ness for a year or so now with no results. I have been 5’9" 200lbs +/-5# for 2 years. I like being my size/weight, I just want to tone up and lose the gut, along with the rest of america. lol
dont hate:

I have a goal of losing 35lbs by July 1st (approx 2lbs per week).
Plan is currently to use EAS Myoplex Lite MR Drinks for breakfast and lunch, accompanied by healthy snacks in the mid-morning and mid-afternoon to keep energy up (Bananas, Hard-boiled Egg, Myoplex Bar, Nuts, etc).
Drinks - Coffee in the morning, otherwise only water. Alcohol in moderation on weekends.
Dinner is open, but generally healthy - Fish, Chicken, Vegetable heavy, etc.
I ordered a months worth of vita-packs from VitaminID (vitaminid.com), and I guess we’ll see how it works - I am not very good about taking pills daily, so I liked the idea of the individual customized packs.
As far as exercise - I am starting a 5-6 day per week training schedule on the bike. 60 minutes minimum per day. This, combined with some light lifting on my gym 3-4 times weekly. Once the weather breaks it will be a combination of road cycling and mountain on the singlespeed.
I am currently around 245lbs and 6’3".
Do yourself (and wallet) a favor and get off the EAS crap. It’s a supplement, not the main course. I’ll bet you (or anyone who follows that diet) fail miserably if you try to follow that diet plan- since the supplements will leave you feeling hungry a lot.
Instead, eat more whole foods. Yes, it takes more preparation, but it will be worth it in the long run. Peppers, asparagus, broccoli, salad, tomatoes, avocados, sweet potatoes, Almonds, walnuts, low fat yogurt (I prefer greek yogurt), low fat cheese, low fat cottage cheese, skim milk, chicken, pork loin, extra lean beef, turkey, salmon, tilapia, eggs, brown rice, tuna, roast beef. There’s your grocery list.
Use something like calorieking.com to figure out how much you are actually intaking and set up a plan. Write everything down in a notebook you eat/drink. Review it and make sure you are following your plan (enough water intake etc.) Also- set up a better weight lifting regime- the cardio focus will most definitely not give you the results you want.
Your goal of 2 lbs per week is pretty intense and probably unrealistic for 17+ weeks straight. 8 weeks of it, a week off, and another 8 weeks of it is probably your best bet of coming close to meeting your goal. Good luck- it won’t be easy.
yep^ and eliminate coffee
stick to weight lifting and high intensity cardio
Meh, whatever. I know multiple people who have had success with them. And coffee isn’t that bad, as long as you don’t get heavy into the sugar/cream.
I know whole foods are good, but I don’t have time to deal with that for breakfast and lunch. I generally eat good stuff for dinner.
2lbs a week I think is pretty reasonable for me. You don’t know my eating/drinking habits. I will be dropping my calorie intake in half (at least) with this.
Well, keep us posted on how that works out for you. Eating 1 healthy meal and a bunch of supplements and snacks isn’t a proper diet plan at all, nor will it work. Too little caloric intake will send your body into survival mode, making it impossible to lose fat. Only thing you’ll accomplish is losing muscle, which will make you look worse than you do now.
And I love coffee- but I drink it black, no additives. On occasion I’ll mix it with protein powder for a pre workout mix. Works wonders.
holy shit, that is an awesome idea.
take it for what its worth, but I read a mens health article that said coffee (along with anything else) isnt bad for you. Pretty sure they said it had some benefits at 2-4 cups a day
apparently it lowers the chance of diabetes
but, when you add milk/cream/sugar you’re adding unneeded carbs/calories , if you’re trying to cut calories and lose weight i wouldnt drink it
f. I can never win. but I only drink it at work. and I only have 2 more days of work, so I should be alright.
I’ve been drinking green tea with honey instead of coffee lately. It has antioxidants and natural caffeine, but not as much as coffee so it keeps me awake without keeping me completely wired.
I wish coffee wired me up. I just drink it because it tastes good, isnt coffee, and is an OK alternative to water.
Havent been able to get into tea yet, still dont have a taste for it.
Coffee isn’t coffee? :gotme:
Also, give it a try with some honey. It adds some flavor to it, green tea by itself is pretty plain.
lol, whoops. I meant it isnt pepsi.
I have a good friend who just shed 35 over a few months doing this exact thing. Just sayin…
MR Shakes are exactly that - Meal Replacements (not supplements). A Slim-Fast empire has been built around the success, I am not sure how you can sit here and tell me they don’t work.
I get what you are saying about a very low calorie diet, but I am not going that far. The fact is that I take in probably twice as many calories as I should be, daily - and I am simply cutting it down to what it should be.
I still plan on taking in 1800-ish calories daily, which I doubt is going to send my body into “survival mode”. The drinks will not be my only source of calories throughout the day, I supplement them with fruit, HB eggs, nuts, etc, as needed.
Good luck Tom!
