hey guys,
I just have a little problem. I have a fram filter that i put on the last oil change. It’s not coming off this time. I tried everything! The special tools; lettin the engine run and get warm and then try takin it off; nothin worked!
anyways, I left the filter on and just put new oil in there for now. how long can I drive before I should definitely change the filter? Can/Should I wait til the next oil change (5000 KM)? Fram filters say that they can be changed every three oil changes
I still had 1800 KM more to go before hitting 5000. But it had already been three months.
Any input greatly appreciated
hey,
ya you can leave it for anoter 5000k’s its nice to change it every time though.
Next time you go get your oil changed take it to a shop and let them take off the filter.
Right now I work in a oil bay and do oil changes for a living. I have a few different tools to get them off. so far i have been able to get every filter off. Let me tell you some of them you would think are welded on!
hope that helped
get a REEAALYY long screwdriver… and a hammer…
makes it REAL easy to twist off… BTW… don’t be right underneath it when you stab it through the side… it WILL leak…
yup, I had to do this one time… works well.
Yup the screwdriver trick is the answer to your predicament.
Incidentally you mentioned the dreaded Fram filter. Do yourself a favour and replace it with something that doesn’t completely blow goats. The Fram Extra Guard and Double Guard units are complete trash. They both have glued cardboard caps holding in the tiny (193sq inch) filtering media. Combine this with a cheesy rubber anti-drainback valve and plastic bypass valve and your heading towards dirty oil heading back into the pan AND low initial pressure at startup. If you absolutely must use a Fram filter, pick up a Fram Tough Guard as it at least has a silicone anti-drainback valve.
Personally I swear by Purolator (Pure One and Premium Plus) and Wix (made by Dana and also sold by NAPA as Silver and NAPA Gold).
At each oil change I cut open my old filter and examine it for shavings and to inspect the overall condition of the media. Perhaps it’s slightly insane, but hey I love my cars.
HAHA, the screwdriver trick is the ultimate last act of despiration!
I had to do that a few times too. Messy, but at least this method works.
I’ve heard great things about the Purolator or Mobile filters. People swear by them, but they’re hard to find in Canada. I stick with OEM Nissan filters for simplicity.
For oil, I’m using good on Castrol GTX 10W-30 on the KA. Find that it doesn’t burn so easily, not that I have a big oil consumption problem. Too bad piston #4 is giving me trouble.
On the SR, I used to use Amsoil 10W-30. I’ve switched to the German Castrol Syntec 0W-30 which is a real Group IV synthetic oil, and not that fraud hydrocracked crap.
Thanks so much for all your suggestions. Sheesh, I thought my question was dumb, but I guess a lot of people have had this problem.
I’m going to try the screw driver trick. Can’t believe that didn’t come to my mind before. Anyways, I guess it’s ok to wait til the next oil change which will be at 3000 this time, not 5000
Yeah I always lubricate the filters. I guess the FRAMs are crap filters :?:
Can the Nissan filters only be bought at the dealership? and how much do they cost?
has anyone else had any bad experiences with Fram filters? Because i have been using them for about 3 oil changes with no noticable problems…
