if you were to do a “budget” build on an eg that your setting up for auto-x/ roadcourse on weekends, what would you use? car in question is a '93 cx, bone stock.
i was thinking ls swap, with a better geared tranny (gsr?). would keep it simple and dependable enough to double as a daily. now for suspension, would stock gsr components suffice? they seem to be available pretty cheap (~100 for all 4 corners). would also be upgrading the brakes as well.
basically what i kinda wanna do is build the car using all “stock” parts. i’m a honda newb for the most part so help me out
sounds like it would be solid. ls might not be as quick as some would like their auto-x cars to be, but i wouldnt know. upgraded springs/struts might not be a bad idea either.
well it doesn’t need to be the fastest thing, i just want it to be fun to get some seat time in with, eventually i’d move onto somthing faster. but for now it doesn’t need to be anything too special
go to picperformance.com they have the most impressive suspensions i’ve seen. I have one of their setup on my car and they’re awsome for Auto-X. I would do suspension first though, for auto-xing it’s the most important and brakes I suppose. Oh, and don’t forget to lighten that thing up a little.
trust me i can’t auto-x on this current motor haha its a d15 that burns a ton of oil and has the longest gears in existence! thanks for the link tho i’ll check them out
i don’t think i’d bother with ls/vtec. i’ve never auto-xed before but how long would you be in vtec, and would it make that much of a difference. i’d go for something with a little mid-range ass. what about a regular ls, or even a crv motor?
The best thing for you to do is at the next event, find the SM Civic guys and talk to us about what we have done to our cars, go for some rides, and see what you like. We all have something different.
vtec motors are a bit better down low then non-vtec motors. non-vtec only has one cam. its mid-range, not great down low, not great up high. kinda blahhh. vtec has two cams which means the first cam can be better down low, then once u hit vtec range, u get great power up high. and im not positive but i think an ls/vtec would be cheaper then a b16. but it doesnt really matter, i would def go with a vtec b series
ls bottom end with itr topline pistons.
arp rodbolts
b16 cylinder head
Itr/ctr cams
b16 tranny
this combo can be had and built very inexpensively and i ran a similar setup for about 2yrs shifting at about 10,000rpms and drag racing running 8.1’s in the 1/8mi.
the higher compression will give you good throttle response and snapyness, while giving you good top end.
if you wanna spend more money then 1G then you can get into good race headers and intakes but i made 196whp with a dc sports header which you can find for arund 150bucs.
thanks for the replies guys…definitly gives me some options to look into.
turbociv, the stock ls rods can take the high revs like that without any problems? whenever i look into ls/vtec i seem to read alot about how people are spinning rod bearings, or are they just not doing it the right way?
