Picked up a 240z

Wow, amazing build. I always thought 240z’s were bad ass! Keep us posted

Knocked out a few hours on the car tonight, there is about 25 pounds of metal/rust and sound deadening under the car. Spent a ton of time with a mask, gloves, scraper and propane torch working on removing the interior tar, but I had to use a heat gun in some slightly tighter/more sensitive areas for safety’s sake. (I know, me using caution, hard to believe.)

Working around the pedal set on the trans tunnel.

Some floor rust on the driver’s side which has separated the floor from the rear frame rail extension. I’ve gone under and looked above and the frame rail extension under the floor board is in mint shape despite the passenger’s side one being all banged up (not that it matters as I’m putting bad dog replacement/subframe connectors in).

Progress.

If all goes well I’ll be at PT (turbojettaMKIV)'s house first weekend in december so he can weld in the floors, subframe connectors and the small flush bits on the firewall and the rear 1/4 panel/liners. Then some POR15 work and the interior goes back together while I start on wiring

Very good man  I always loved S30s. This will be awesome when done. I hope to do this to my s13 down the line even though its not rusted like that haha… Really fun to watch projects

Rogerthat, in reality this car has very very little rust. The only major stuff needing repair is the floorboards, which could have been patched rather than full replacements.

Trimming away more of that fat… err rust and sound deadening. That’s about 2/3’s of what I removed today. Weighs somewhere around 25lbs.

Where I left it tonight, back was killing me from being hunched inside the car for a few hours. Trimmed the passenger’s side all the way down, no more rust over there. The driver’s side under floorboard support was in great shape, so it stayed (though slightly cut off at the rearward section. I also left the seat support in, although it wont be there I needed a bit of structure left in the car for moving it. I have a bit more to do on the driver’s side and the entire firewall and inner rockers needs to be stripped still. I have the trans tunnel mostly done though it still needs a chemical bath.

Chevy 427 > VQ. If you go VQ i’d do the 4.2 stroker

No. Followed by a resounding.

No.

I’m not building a $15k engine for this, nor am I going to swap a V8 in.

Very cool. You should post up a project of your 944 too. Before I got my 240 I was considerng a 944, but I figured being young insurance would have killed me… It’s an awesome car.

There are rarely ever project threads on son240, I thought about posting a thread on my track car’s build but meh… people would go on about taurus brakes and automatics lmao silly ppl.

Keep up your stuff man  I love project threads! Really inspiratonal!

Nah man, I wont put the 944 project over here. It’s not particularly related to this site. It occasionally slips into this thread though.

Might be acquiring an engine for the Datsun next week.

Spent most of the day in the garage, lots of progress however it doesn’t look like it, heh. Most of the firewall and trans tunnel have been taken down to bare metal (or close to it) with sand paper or a wire wheel. All of the insulation is gone. Most of the areas that will need to be clean for welding the floors in have been prepped as well. I’ve got a few more hours to spend on it, especially behind the pedals but it’s coming along nicely.

Worked on the spare tire area and hatch are a bunch. Cleaned up some rust and removed a few bits of destroyed sound proofing. Primed the well and then used rubberized undercoating on it. It had a bit of rot just in the 1/4" or so around the drain grommet. Sorry I forgot to take in progress pics, it’s still drying in the last photo.

Also rolled the car up onto my scales, weights as follows:

LF: 271 RF: 271
LR: 404 RR: 392

Total: 1338
F/R: 40.5%/59.5%

This is with no engine, no floors, no transmission, no driveshaft, no interior, w/fuel tank, full suspension, steering, brakes, metal rear bumper, all lights, ZG Flares, IMSA 3 Piece wing, full glass, all metal bodywork. I believe my shell is extremely clean and contains no bondo except for on the hatch (if you care about how much bondo weighs)

I thought you were using that KA you picked for the Z… Now what are you going with?

I love watching the work going into this thing. Keep it up.

hey man Im picking up a 240z soon mine is just a tad bit worst than yours. if your wondering theres a guy here in toronto that has TONS or replacement parts for the datsun 240z the floor panels are $350 a set
EDIT…
I just realized that you already ordered them from Rob. lol

also what rims are you putting on this beast i wanna know where to get Konig Rewinds or Wanatanabe rims or somthing similar in Toronto.

Google.com

I’m not hip on the JDM scene so I don’t know half of what you just said.

lol nevermind i just bought one today only 500 bux! has a Widebody front lip and a fin spoiler that says Fairlady Z on the back , the guy said the previous ownder did it up in the late 70’s, I’ll make a new thread with mine in it. anyways good luck on the project man.

damn man, im pretty jealous g/l with the project!

i cant wait to start ripping my 240 apart come spring time, god damn winter and full garages

Ok, so some pics from this weekend hanging out down in Philly since I just got home.

Some paper template action.

Starting to get it done, PT had to make a ton of cuts to get the parts bent back and then rewelded to get the floors to fit the contours of the trans tunnel.

Get’r Done.

PT’s SICK EBRAKE DRIFT INITIATION.

Floors in, have some patches to do up on the firewall still and the subframe connectors to the rear of the car (for extra stiffness) along with a few other minor things, but the bright side is I can start doing wiring and putting stuff back in very soon. PT also welded up all the spot weld holes and random stuff in the engine bay for me which I need to grind down flush so the engine bay can be painted satin black.

Big thanks to PT for slaving on my car all Sunday.

Oh, totally forgot at one point I’m grinding away on the driver’s side, PT is welding away on the passenger’s side and little did I know the undercoating caught on fire under the car in the trans tunnel. Aparently flames were licking the back of my coat from the shifter hole in the trans tunnel while PT was pounding them out with his welding gloves. unbeknown to me.

Nice solid work there! Glad to see a project in the works like this Mike.

yay progress

i wonder if these have an Open diff or a regular Lsd , check out this commercial i found.

Ive almost got mine running, its weird how the Header and throttle bodies are on the same side.

Nearly all of them are open diff, I’m putting an R200 short nose unit in. As 240sx units are quite a bit cheaper and more readily available. The only other GOOD bolt in IMO is the sti diff.

Ok, this is back on the market. I just bought some more stuff and I really dont have room for the car.

Make me an offer, with or without the KA.
