Finally got to do some work on the Datsun. It’s been sitting in storage since Feb.
The car is at “The Shop”, a place rented out by Mafdark as a place for people to work on their cars. Big thanks to him for setting that up. It’s going to be nice working in a heated garage this winter.
Shameless plug: Talk to Mafdark is you’re in western ny and need/want a nice place to work on your car w/o it taking up your garage/driveway. He’s got several spots open still.
On to the Datsun.
Bought the car on a whim. I have always loved the look of these cars, and wanted a long term project. I saw the ad here on shift and jumped on it. Might have been a dumb move, but who cares.
The original plan was to put the ka24de that came with the car in and turbo it. Then I saw this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOKsRvzvofA
I have now decided a VH45 would be a better choice than the ka.
So if anyone wants a ka24de and tranny, let me know.
On to the pictures (DISCLAIMER: I only have a shitty cell phone camera, hence the shitty pictures):
10 minutes into taking it apart.
Working on the fenders. This is my buddy cutting off a rusted in bolt.
The fenders were being a bitch, so we moved to the doors, in hopes that we would find a bolt or two that we missed. We didn’t
Finally found all the bolts holding the fenders on. The drivers side came right off after that. There is one bolt left on the passenger side that we weren’t able to get out. It is partially covered by part of the fender. I had forgotten my rotozip so we couldn’t cut the fender back the 1/8" we needed. I’ll get to it next time.
With much of the front end off, I started looking for rot. The frame had been patched by the previous owner, but he didn’t finish the job on the passenger side. There is still a good amount of dead metal that needs to be replaced.
There is also a decent sized section on the drivers side just behind the wheel well that needs to be replaced too.
KA24DE long block with accessories and rwd tranny for sale!
Pile of parts:
My buddy’s brand new mustang gt. He literally picked it up from the dealership, picked me up from my house, and drove us to Rochester.
