Slack's 1971 Datsun 240z

Finally got to do some work on the Datsun. It’s been sitting in storage since Feb.

The car is at “The Shop”, a place rented out by Mafdark as a place for people to work on their cars. Big thanks to him for setting that up. It’s going to be nice working in a heated garage this winter.

Shameless plug: Talk to Mafdark is you’re in western ny and need/want a nice place to work on your car w/o it taking up your garage/driveway. He’s got several spots open still.

On to the Datsun.

Bought the car on a whim. I have always loved the look of these cars, and wanted a long term project. I saw the ad here on shift and jumped on it. Might have been a dumb move, but who cares.

The original plan was to put the ka24de that came with the car in and turbo it. Then I saw this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOKsRvzvofA

I have now decided a VH45 would be a better choice than the ka.

So if anyone wants a ka24de and tranny, let me know.

On to the pictures (DISCLAIMER: I only have a shitty cell phone camera, hence the shitty pictures):

10 minutes into taking it apart.

Working on the fenders. This is my buddy cutting off a rusted in bolt.

The fenders were being a bitch, so we moved to the doors, in hopes that we would find a bolt or two that we missed. We didn’t :frowning:

Finally found all the bolts holding the fenders on. The drivers side came right off after that. There is one bolt left on the passenger side that we weren’t able to get out. It is partially covered by part of the fender. I had forgotten my rotozip so we couldn’t cut the fender back the 1/8" we needed. I’ll get to it next time.

With much of the front end off, I started looking for rot. The frame had been patched by the previous owner, but he didn’t finish the job on the passenger side. There is still a good amount of dead metal that needs to be replaced.

There is also a decent sized section on the drivers side just behind the wheel well that needs to be replaced too.

KA24DE long block with accessories and rwd tranny for sale!

Pile of parts:

My buddy’s brand new mustang gt. He literally picked it up from the dealership, picked me up from my house, and drove us to Rochester.

Did whats his name trade in the V6? LOL

How much you want for that motor btw?

No, it got totaled last week.

uhm…I got the motor and tranny for $500…so anything near that. I’d prefer if they were sold together.

Slack, I’m deffinately going to come up sometime and lend a hand, specialy as im sure you know from a few of my posts is something I want to do as well, so it will be fun to give a hand and learn what im getting myself into along the way.

Its a bit of a hike but I have no problem comming up a few times to give a hand. When that is I have no idea as with my newly born daughter life is hectic.

The car doesnt look to bad thou its deff salvagable. Cant wait to see/help more with the progress :thumbup

You’re more than welcome too man. Just shoot me a PM when you know you’ll be free. You don’t know how to weld by any chance, do you? Haha, I gotta get reading up on that.

And the car is deff salvagable. The only difficult spot right now is the spot behind the drivers side wheel well. The rest of it is pretty much flat surfaces. I do still need to dismantle the back of the car though. I’m hoping the hatch area isn’t too bad.

Unfortunatly I’ve never used a mig/tig welder but I can stick weld pretty good :excited

Haha I’ll tell you what looking at getting acess to a mig welder pretty soon… Ill give it a shot if I think its clean enough to work on something like this then Ill be more than happy to

Everyone says though that if I can stick weld relitivly clean mig welding should be pretty easy

good to hear. I’m going to be picking up a used welder at some point, as i do want to learn, I just have to pay off a couple other toys first

Thanks for the plug,

I saw it today, looks like your have your work cut out for you. Give me a ring if you need tools or a loaner welder.

jake, we should swap that motor in my Hardbody Pick up.

buy the motor and tranny and we can!

oh yea, ill just pull money from my ass.

Someone should pick up this motor and tranny, and fuckin McBitchins chassis and could have a 90% done 240

looks like an awesome project. keep us updated!!!

yo sick project i love old school cars going to look good

More rot :frowning:

sucks but nothign that cant be fixed and luckily all in spots no ones really gonna see

That whole corner is rot. I was afraid if would have to find another shell, but I talked to Mike and he knows a guy that replaced the same area. So it’s still salvageable.

Did he IM you ever? He was showing me more picyures of work he did on his that I hadn’t seen in person. Lets just say he can definitely help you out.

No, I haven’t heard from him. If I still haven’t when I’m ready to start patching it up I’ll get his contact info from you. Mind sending me some of those pictures he showed you?
