Pistols and Shooting

I am thinking about getting into shooting. I have shot a few different guns before but I was a lot younger when I did. I want to get something medium sized in say a 9mm or something along those lines…

Glock 19 - http://www.glock.com/te_g19.htm

This is kind of cazy but it looks cool as hell regardless…

“The fact that your gun says ‘replica’ on it, and mine says, ‘Desert Eagle, Point Five - O’…”

I know a place in PA where you can shoot just about any type of weapon (even full .50 cal stuff) for cheap. Large range. I’ll need to call to get the exact address.

As far as getting your licence/permit in NYS, it is a bitch. If you are planning to go that route, I can go into more detail.

IMHO, it’s not as cool as you think. Especially when you aren’t going to use them for what they are intended to do. After a while shooting non moving targets is boring. Target/Skeet shooting or long range shooting can be a bit more challenging (and fun).

EDIT: Oh yeah, I know an instructor for pistols in Dunkirk, they were putting together a class to do some shooting. If you want, I can get you the contact info. PM me.

I hear ya on the permit. A cop friend of mine was telling me he goes to the range quite often and putting his name on my application for the gun permit would expedite things a bit perhaps. Just a thought at the moment but it’s something I am definitly interested in… Thanks for the info!

Your first handgun should be a revolver, not an automatic.

Why do you say that? I disagree, but I’m curious to know your reasoning.

They are more simple to maintain, and much safer in terms of accedental misfire. Also, you can tell when a revalver is loaded by looking at it , so if u gota shove it in a burglurs face, they know you aint shitt’n lol.

IMHO the Desert Eagle is a waist of $. Iv held them, their huge, but offer nothing but looks. Just because a gun looks cool doesnt mean it will make it more accurate or more powerfull. for your first handgun i would suggest a .22 or .22 mag, very good VERRY ACCURATE round, and it is good for getting the feel of a firearm.

i rip kids with glocks dealges usp’s all day

in cs

What JEG said. It’s kind of obvious in the same way that your first bike shouldn’t be a Hayabusa and like that. Automatics can be pretty finicky and are just more complicated. You definitely want something simple and foolproof when dealing with a lethal weapon, at least until you are very comfortable with firearms. Also, a good revolver is cheaper than a good automatic. And the very last thing anyone should want is a crappy gun! I’d rather have hardware store rod bolts than a Saturday Night Special.

BOOM! Headshot!!!

I’ve never been there, but doesn’t the shooting range on Maple Road in Amherst allow handguns? or is that all rifles/shotguns?

I can see where you guys are coming from, but from my experience I think that as long as you are properly trained on how to handle and care for the weapon, it shouldn’t matter what you start with (revolver v.s. pistol). Proper training and common sense will translate into safety. Also, a lot of the newer pistols on the market are very dummy proof (sometimes fustratingly so).

My first weapon was an M16A2. My second weapon was an M249 SAW. I had no problems with weapon safety or handling either weapon efficiently . I’ve handled many other weapons including various semi-auto/auto pistols (9mm Browning was my favorite), and a few sniper rifles. To this day I have never held or used a revolver.

IMHO, the newer “plastic” pistols are just as easy to maintain as any revolver.

just play duck hunt and clay shooters

agreed. the .50 is a mother to keep staedy, much of the weight sits out far past the grip, although they did a good job keeping it balanced. and even with the heavy recoil spring, it still kicks like a bitch.

IMO, unless you plan on using it for home defense or close-in target shooting, I would go with a remington shotgun. I have both an 870 and 1100, and skeet is almost as much fun as sex, but a bit louder when you blow your load.

if you are digging on pistols, glocks are extremely well built - but pricey. I would shop about for your first 9mm, but that ammo is a good choice. many local stores carry the parrabellum and it’s not too expensive. least you aren’t looking at .45’s like my buddy a few years back - even the M1911 replicas are getting up there in price.

so, cliffies - is this a target gun or a defensive weapon, make your choice from there.

and RX3, we gotta talk some shop one of these days. I had always wanted to check out the saws.

yay! That reminds me I get my new AR15 soon…

I think im going to pick up a SKS at the next gun show also

Two of my favorites… regulars.

I  my mossberg 500

i  my nintendo magnum

Not to nock you tast in FIREARMS, but the street sweeper is great for VERY close range, not saying i dont want one, they look fun as hell and IMO the Uzi is just useless. anybody can spray bullets, but a marksman hits what he aims at. if i have to take sombody out id rather do it in one shit then have to unload 50 rounds on his ass. just my $.02

I have a Noble 12 gage double barrel and a Massberg 835. Both are very good guns, i use the double for skeet and small game and the mossy for deer ( rifled deer barel w/ scope and Lightfield hybryd slugs = 1 1/2-2" groupings at 50 yards) but the slugs i use are about $2 apiece.

My next firearm will be either a 30-06 or a 308. i want to get into some big game hunting up in the catskills/aderondac regions.

I’m going to have to agree with the “shooting non moving targets gets boring” statement.

Shit now I’ve really got an itch to go do some target shooting. I’ve been neglecting my great grandpa’s bolt-action .22 Remington with peep-hole and post sights and my Remington 870 shotgun for years now.

I’ve always thought this gun would be a blast for casual plinking/target shooting (Colt 22 aka Cadet):
