Places to go for paint?

Hey,

So Im getting ready to put on the new body panels on my car, which consist of two fenders, bumper, side skirts and a door, and Im not sure where to go for paint. Its a drift car… errr, wannabe drift car, and I know Im gonna fuck up the front end again, but at the same time I want it to look good while it lasts.

Kenji (buddyworm) is telling me to go to Crappy Tire, pick up some spray cans and go nuts. Personally, thats the worst idea Ive ever heard…

Any suggestions?

Well, why would you wanna spend good money on something you’re just gonna slam into haybales again? :stuck_out_tongue: Besides, if you’re aren’t satisified with it, THEN you can go spend the big bucks on your paint job.

B-Wurm

Its not the hay bails Im worried about. Its the barriers at Castrol. They always seem to jump out in front of me.

Darned stationary objects. They sneak up on ya!

B-Wurm

Yeah, especially those bus poles, hey? They just jump outta no where!

ANYWAYS, does anyone have any helpful advice?

    • Perhaps it might be good to go with a 2-tone paint scheme? Keep the lower panels a different color, so that it would be harder to tell the difference in paint if you had to re-do it yourself later.
    • Check with the NAIT/Grant Mac automotive departments. You might have a wait on your hands, but often they’ll take in cars for students to work on (in this case paint) for free/cheap.
    • Call some autobody places and see if they’ve got any leftover paint. One of my first cars was repainted by an apprentice at a shop in Red Deer, with a bunch of pearl white they had left over. Got the job done, and done cheap.

find someone to paint it at desros
or try your own hand at it.

i dunno buddy what u pay is what u get. If u don’t care how it looks like do this
http://forums.780tuners.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45862 don’t use spray bombs , u’ll mess up majorly.
If you want a decent job
1 go AMP panels get: 150grit paper to ruff up ur current paint, some 320 to smooth it. Can of bondo/hardener and/or fiberglass(kitty hair).Palm sander . Roll ofmasking tape and roll of paper.Primer kit(get Amp brand ) I order it under shop account so i get different cost than u would but that should run u 150-250$ . While there order up some paint in ur case i would get endura or any other single stage enamel paint. don’t pay morte than 100/L u’ll need 2L of paint + reducer. Now on a sunny day get a buddy to come over with bneer and go hard , do entire car at 150grid , than repair any dents/rust etc with bondo/fiberglass. Larger damage u wanna cut/weld 1st than fiberglass than bondo for smoothness, generally u never wanna lay more than 1/4 of filler otherwise it’ll crack and look like shiet in no time. Once repairs are done 320 grit it smooth.
If you got this far pm me i might have a guy to spray it for you at a good price.Or go desro and ask how much to spray.
Ohh wait mako will spray it for 395$ including paint and sanding , no damage repair.

Use Tremclad and a roller. http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=2331682&page=0&fpart=1&vc=1

Y’know, I got a new fender from a truck I used to have, I might give this a whirl to see how it goes.

Looks like shit. Trust me, I’ve tried. To tell you the truth, I’m getting a little sick of people recomending this when they haven’t tried it. Just to get it to look presentable you’re looking at 100+hrs of work. It’s insane how much wetsanding is required. It will never even come close to a $1000 Maaco job either…

Im starting to lead towards just sanding it myself, and taking it to Maaco. Im sure Ill run into some more stationary objects drifting, err, trying to drift, so theres no point in investing a lot of money into it looking good just to fuck it up again.

If I take it to Maaco, how far off will their paint be as opposed to the rest of the car? The paint on the rest of the car is only 2 years old, but Im not sure who repainted it.

Tremclad works just fine, as long as u know how to paint in the 1st place. Just like with air gun painting u still get noticeble orange peel even from factory . So as long as you know what your doing when it comes to reducing properly, prepping surface etc . Basicly some painting expirience, you should be ok with a weekend not 100 hours. And i would go for marine paint over cheap tremclad etc, i painted a seedo 1nce took me 5 hours thats prep and all , wetsanding took me maybe 45min or so . Marine paint is self leveling urithane similar to automotive refinishing but made to be brushed/rolled just like tremclad .

Maaco don’t match colours and they use singlestage acrylic enamels not base and clear for 395$ special so u do entire car , otherwise it won’t match the rest. And they only do outside no jams , no prep just a ruff hand sand so new paint sticks.Refinish isn’t guranted unless they do prep/damages too. And base and clear spray only with macco is 1200$+, so same as any reputable bodyshop pretty much.

So what u spend is whatu’ll get at the end.

Damnit nismo, youre making me second guess all this shit. :?

So you’ve painted with tremclad before? I’d love to see the results…

You forgot to mention it will still look 10X better than tremclad. Prep yourself and just take it somewhere to get sprayed.

Personally, I would get it done at macco… hell if I owned a show car I would still get it done there… that way its not expensive and you can repaint the car every year / time you mess it up.

Yeah, I think Im leaning towards Maaco now. I just cant decide if I just want the new parts painted, or the entire car so everytime I fuck up the front again, it at least matches the rest of the car…

Just paint the whole thing. if its a track car its going to have to get painted again anyway might as well have it match, at the same time maybe pick something a little wild to help get the car noticed. If its not your daily you might as well go with some loud paint.

IF YOU BOTHERED TO READ MY POST, NO I DIDN’T USE TREMCLAD , I USED MARINE PAINT .
2 I SUUGEST USING MARINER PAINT OVER TREMCLAD DUE ITS SIMILARITIES WITH “ENDURA” AND OTHER SINGLE STAGE AUTOMOTIVE ENAMEL, AND ITS ONLY 50$
MORE.
IF YOU WANNA USE TREMCLAD GO BUY A CAN FOR 5$ AND A ROLLER FIRST, NOW GO HARD ON SOME OLD FENDER/METAL LEFTOVERS. OR GO TO MOPAR LINK, HONDA LINKS ETC AND LOOK FOR YOURSELF HOW IT LOOKS IF YOU PROPERLY PREP IT , REDUCE IT ETC. THERE IS AT LEAST 20-30 CARS BY NOW ON THOSE LINKS DONE WITH TREMCLAD OR SIMILAR AND SEE IF ITS FOR YOU.

AND FOR A TRACK CAR WHAT DO U CARE IF IT LOOKS LIKE SHIET AT THE END , ARE U ENTERING INTO A SHOW CONTEST WITH 80$ FINISH?
BUT TREMCLAD WILL PROTECT IT FROM RUST AND CAR WILL HAVE 1 SOLID COLOUR WHICH WILL BE EASY TO MATCH/FIXUP EVEN 3 YEARS DOWN THE ROAD.
AT THE END OF THE DAY ITS THE PAINTER AND USING RIGHT TOOLS , NOT THE PAINT ITSELS SO MUCH, AS LONG AS U DON’T USE HOUSEPAINT.

AND HONESTLY U WEREN’T EXPECTING 80$ PAINT JOB WITH TREMCLAD TO LOOK LIKE A BASE AND CLEAR FINISH WERE YOU ?
OR WERE U EXPECTING IT TOO BE SHOWROM AWARD WINNING 1000000$LOOK.
U WANT SHOW ROOM GET KANDY/CAMELEON AND BABY IT, BUT GET READY FOR 8-15000$ BILL TO SWALLOW FOR THAT UNIEQ LOOK.

AND MAACO IS UP TO U , BUT IF U DO UR OWN PREP THEY DON’T GUARANTEE REFINISH. SO PAINT CHIPPING PEALING,ETC DUE TO SHITTTY SANDING/PREP.
NOT REPAIRED TINY DINGS WILL GIVE U FISH EYES ETC.SO IF U WANT MAACO U BETTER OF DOING BASE AND CLEAR VIA DESRO OR PRIVATE PAINTER AFTER OWN PREP.
ALSO MAACO USSES CHEAPEST ENAMEL PAINT ON EARTH (CHEAPER THAN TREMCLAD ), THEY SAND UR CAR FOR 20 MIN BY HAND THAN TAPE UP UR WINDOWS LIGHTS , PAINTBOOTH TIME 395$IS UR TOTAL FOR 50$ OF PAINT AND SOME SHOP MATERIAL.
BUT IF YOU WANT MAACO TO GURANTEE UR FINISH OR DO 1/2 DECENT WORK YOU BE LOOKING AT 1500$+. DOOR JAMS ARE 150$EACH TO DO, HATCH AND UNDER THE HOOD 300 EACH, THATS ANOTHER 900$ SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD DEAL?

SO DO UR OWN PREP , BUY OWN SUPLIES /PAINT AND GO PAY SOMEONE 100/200$ TO SHOOT IT FOR YOU . AND THATS A BASE+CLEAR REFINISH FOR 500$-700 OR SO

AND IF YOU GOING TO MAACO A COMERCIAL COLLISION REFINISHING SHOP FOR KUSTOM LOOK THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH UR BRAIN.

PS: I AM NOT YELLING , I AM AT WORK,FCAPS.
AND I AM NOT TRYING TO DEMOTE MAACO OR PROMOTE TREMCLAD (ANY OTHER ROLLABLE SINGLESTAGE ENAMEL.) JUST WANT YOU GUYS TO GET A GOOD IDEA ON END RESAULTS BEFORE YOU GET URSELF INTO MAACO OR SELF PAINTING. MY PERSONAL PREFERENCE IS GET A CAN OF CHEAPEEST PAINT ,HVLP OR AIG GUN AND PRACTICE SHOOTING ON A OLD PANEL TILL U GET GOOD. THAT SHOOT UR OWN CAR.

TREMCLAD

BASE CLEAR.

BOTH DONE BY THE SAME PAINTER

Wait, so you haven’t personally tried tremclad? I have. It looks terrible. It’s really annoying when people defend it when they haven’t done it. Yes, I’ve seen all of those links before. I read almost all of those pages before trying it. I could easily make the paint job I did on the trunk look that good in a photo with the proper lighting. I can tell you right now, it doesn’t look that good in real life. You should do your car with tremclad. I would love to see that. In the end I would rather put more hours in at work to pay for a proper paint job than waste half of my life wetsanding/buffing.
