Just totally depends on what you want in a laptop.

Do you want a desktop replacement? Do you want a light travelling laptop? What kind of software are you going to be running on it? There are all kinds of questions need answered before I can give you what I would suggest that you do.

Honestly though yes Mac OS10 is nice, it’s pretty stable and things work well, but you give up a vast majority of software capabilities when you go mac.

Any specific reason you are going with a laptop, more than 60/70% of laptop users never use them to travel much and they end up being a slow replacement. If you just don’t have a lot of desk area well they have a lot of nice small form factor pc’s out now:

If you are just looking for something different and don’t mind spending a little cash…

Or you want a laptop with a 17" wide LCD that you can watch movies and stuff on while you travel a little…

There are all kinds of different things you can get in the xp world to not make your PC feel/look like windows as well.

www.skinz.org is a good site to check out.

Personally me, I build my own machines, and still use windows for my own day to day desktop cause I enjoy playing a lot of games. I run windows at work, cause I need the software support and sometimes don’t have time to dick around with linux.

If I need a pure sysadmin machine I’ll have a linux box that I can work from, but unfortunately these days I’m doing a ton of odd shit that I end up needing something from windows these days.

If you do buy a laptop and don’t get a mac, check out the new

I used to HATE MAC, dont get me wrong… but im talking specifically about the new OSX 10.whatever newest version it is. MAC was horriable before, and I would never consider one, but if any of you never seen the new MAC OSX check it out. it kicks ass.

if you don’t like windows, run redhat. why pay twice as much for an apple when most everybody uses NTFS which i’m not sure apple OSX is compatible with.

Who cares what file system he uses.

If he doesn’t mind paying a little more for something different, it’s cool. If it is just a computer to get on the internet and play games on, it will work just fine.

if thats all hes doing then its fine, but if he wants to share any files with a windows user, hes going to have problems.

tell me about it. i dont like this mac

for most people it doesnt really matter what you get. Most people only need their computer to surf the internet, watch porn videos, type some word and excel stuff up and thats it. To be quite honest it doesnt really matter all that much, get whatever.

We have a few mac pc’s here that share files just fine with the pc’s. They can even print to the same printers as a windows based pc can. For 90% of the things most users will use a computer for, the mac will do just fine.

Hmm.

Sorry NTFS would only matter if he’s trying to stuff the hard drive in a native mac and reading from that drive directly.

File transfers between machines uses what’s considered a CIFS/SMB format…

So you would have something like this in a transfer:

NTFS->CIFS ============ CIFS->MacOS X

It doesn’t matter cifs will do the translation and writing.

Well like I said im not going to be doing anything complicated on it… basically surfing the net, etc… the reason i want a laptop is I can take it back and forth to work and both places are wireless. I will run remote desktop from the mac to my pc in my office to do estimates out in the parking lot. I can look at my visual database from the mac in the parking lot so i dont have to run back and forth. I dont hate windows… im just tired of looking at it, lol

You’ll get tired of remoting in as well, probably faster!

Note: Some things don’t work well from remote RDP sessions, namely database or very complex applications…

well i can use PC anywhere from home to work… which is remote desktop… my desktop access the main database from the server… so it should work… im gonna try it from my friends mac laptop 1st before i spend the money.

mac’s are pretty cool, especially the new ones. only down side with mac is that most if not all of their hardware is propietary (sp?) basically you won’t see the cheap parts you do with the pc. but since it’s a laptop i doubt you’d be upgrading anything. the new mac laptops are really sweet though, if you want it i say go for it
