Project CADET

So I’ve been holding of on making a build thread until I was closer to having everything. After the posting the sneak peek picture, it was clear people wanted me to start this thread now so I will.

The car as it sits:

1990 Nissan 240SX
KA24E
112,xxx

Current mods(as if it matters):
Cone filter
Apex’i Turbo Timer
Apex’i NOIR cat back
17" Tenzo RS5’s

Theres a picture of the car before the exhaust and rims.

And the exhaust.

Theres a video clip of the exhaust.

The car moves pretty well for the mods, but it was clear to me I need to do more. It just wasn’t fast enough to cure my need for speed. So now I’m at a point in the road where I got some choices to make. I could go the typical route just like everyone else and install an SR20DET. But I’m not one to just try and fit into a crowd. Now true the SR20DET does have some pros but it also has some cons, which lead me to my motor choice, CA18DET. I know the CA18DET doesn’t have the after market as some of the other Nissan motors, but the pros of that motor to me, out way the cons of it. Before I get people jumping down my back, I did research the CA18DET, SR20DET, RB26DETT, VG30DETT and of course, the KA-T.

So what are my plans for the car as of right now, this coming summer and past that. My original goals can’t be met as quickly as I wanted because of money but they will be.

When the car comes out in spring time, it will be a CA swapped 240 on the stock turbo. I’m going to push the stock turbo to the limits and see if I can’t break some records in the mean time, HP and quarter mile. The car will also from the outside appear almost stock. I want it to be sneaky.

Around the middle of summer, the car will get a few upgrades, which I’ll get to later to make my overall goal of 300 whp. I want it to be reliable and drivable at the same time.

Past that, the car will get some visual mods, and some safety mods, but thats to far off in the future.

So what parts do I have for my spring time goal?

-Yonaka Intercooler Type 6 18x9x2.5"
-Synapse BOV (recircing)
-Apex’i GT down pipe
-Greddy turbo outlet
-3" test pipe, TBD
-Walbro 255lbh fuel pump
-Synapse FPR
-Apex’i SAFC 2
-NISMO motor and transmission mounts
-ACT 6 puck clutch with xtreme pressure plate
-DEFi Blue Racer boost gauge
-Hallman boost controller
(pics at end, if not pictured, its on order)

I have a good majority of those parts. I’m sure there is something I’m forgetting.

I will also be doing some weight reduction. What am I expecting? 190-200 whp and a weight of 2500lbs. I’m hoping with some good driving skills to push the car into the 13’s on the stock turbo.

Sometime around midsummer I’ll be upgrading to GT2871r to be fueled by some RC 550cc injectors which will in turn be controlled by Apex’i PowerFC. Along with that will come some more gauges and who knows what else. That will push me to my 300 whp goal with ease. What am I expecting from this setup? I’m not really sure. I thought I knew how fast it would run, but I think my original guesses were quite a bit higher then they probably should have. But I got some time before that happens, so we’ll have to wait and see.

That about sums it up for where I am now, and whats on the way.

Looks good man hope it all comes together for you:tspry:

cleeeeaaannnnn

you pics are getting better (a little)
Remember that if you are going to take the time to take and post pics, make sure they are good ones.

GL with project

Why are you going CA18? The KA is a very stout motor and if you do some research you’ll find it can handle tons of abuse and is a torque monster. Before I stumbled across my Corolla and S12 I had planned to build up a nice turbo KA for an S13. There’s a kid around here that had a 700whp KA Sentra, he taught me a lot of stuff about the engine. Before you jump for an engine that’s 25% smaller just because it comes turbo, give the KA a second thought.

Not a chance would I give the KA a second chance. Trust me, I’ve done my research. The CA is the right motor for me. You’re not the first to preach the KA lifestyle to me either.

Did you purchase a engine yet

No but the moneys sitting in the bank. I’m pretty much trying to decide which place I’d like to purchase from.

Are you looking for a clip or just the engine? And who are you looking at ordering it from possible?

I’m looking to get an engine, transmission, turbo, wiring harness and ecu. sbanzer recommended me a guy from Canada, which is kind of where I’m leaning towards right now.

whose the guy in canada?

have you been in a CA18DET car with the mods you are talking about?

have you been in a mild KA-T build car?

have you been in a 300whp SR car?

i know you dont want to hear this shit, but i really cant suggest enough that you get some more hands on experience with the motors before choosing.

Maybe wait for the Niagara meet up here and browse the 100+ 240’s… you will not find a single one with a CA in it unless it was imported and came with it already.

What are the pros of a CA? You don’t mention them.

be cautious… all i can say, i bought a ‘complete motor’, trans, wiring harness, ecu from a reputable guy in canada as well.

in the end i don’t think anything except for the transmission was usable. Also, listen to guys like bing that have spent time in and around these cars forever - there is a reason people do end up going other routes.

if you’re doing it just to be different thats one thing, but different (unique) is always more expensive to get the same results.

edit: if you really want this engine to swap, i seriously recommend trying to find someone swapping theirs OUT and getting all of the working parts from them. These motor importing businesses have so many middlemen and what not that they all point fingers at each other and you just end up with 5 fingers (a fist) up your ass.

yeah, I am pretty curious as to why your going for the cadet swap. Not bashing, simply would like to hear why.

I wasn’t preaching the KA but I don’t think it matters, you’re just a ‘Motah Swap’ kind of person. They’re just as bad as SR fanboys.

great here comes another SR debate thread… lol in the end neither of them are a poor choice really so theres no point arguing

other than being able to give your project a fancy name… i see no benefits to the ca18; it sounds like you want to make power and be fast at the track.

KA-T is dirt cheap
SR is cheap
RB25 is also relatively cheap…

i don’t get it.

maybe originalsin can chime in. I know he had a ca swap.

Whatever route you go, GL with it and keep the thread updated

GLWS!

oh wait…too soon…

you do know if you want to hit 300whp you will break the internals of that ca rite?
i dont get how everyone is saying the ca is cheaper than an sr? u get an sr and turn the stock turbo up to 14psi n u get roughly 270whp with the common mods such as the ones you have already.
